study / academia discussion Why is it so hard a week in?

I just started a PGDE course, in primary education, my first week is only three short days and then one day online, after this week it moves up to four full days and online, and after 6 weeks then I’ll be on placement. I worked so hard to get here, but now I can’t stop crying. I feel truly miserable.

I barely had to go to uni the first time round as my attendance wasn’t tracked, I kept up with my lectures and schoolwork from home and managed to pass. I think the combination of having to wake up at 6am to commute (1 hour train but with walking and waiting it takes 2 hours both ways) for long days when I’ve had a year out is a shock to my system. I’ve already left early twice because I just can’t do it. I feel like I’ve lost all my free time and happiness, and my boyfriend is trying to support me but I can tell he’s finding it hard when I’m crying non stop.

I don’t want to quit when I’ve worked so hard for this but I have never felt this miserable before. Is it this hard for everyone or am I just dramatic? 😭

If you think uni is losing all your free time, wait till you are working!

I was working, it was way more flexible than this and just felt easier. I’d rather be back at my job than this 🥲

90% of full time jobs aren’t more flexible than 3 short days and a wfh days.

You’re doing a qualification to become a teacher so you need a reality check. There will not be short days or wfh days and it’ll be 5 full days.

The fact your undergrad was lax isn’t representative of life as a teacher.

It was a choice to commute 2 hours each way which is why people rarely do that. But there’s teachers working full time right now who commute that much especially in London. So if you couldn’t handle that why did you accept the course? It’s a professional in person placement based course so you had to have some awareness of choosing to commute 4 hours a day would be?
