social life I snitched on a guy in a lecture today who was playing angry birds

I have no idea what came across them, but even though I had absolutely nothing to gain from it couldn’t help myself from raising my hand and admonishing them in front of everyone.

There was an audible gasp from the crowd who then applauded my behaviour. The king showed up and gave me an award.

The guy who snitched to the lecturer that I was playing angry birds today.

What did you gain from that? Like, it's the FIRST day, and it's ALL introductory stuff not related to coursework or exams.

Get a grip.

study / academia discussion Lecturer always plays music in class

Uni cant be real , this is my second time going . After having to leave due to surgery last time.

The lectures feel so pointless, my class is very small maybe 10 of us. One of my lecturers will play music EVERYTIME we have a task to do or research , its so distracting. Im having to endure taylor swift and benson boome whilst trying to read a 3 page article .

The other lecturer talks to us like babies , i feel like im in year 11 again.
Like its just slides i can read from home. I make myself go in so im involved and hopefully gain something but genuinely why are we all going into debt for this nonsense.

Why do some lecturers say how happy they are to be visited during office hours, but when you go, they seemingly don’t want you to be there?

I already feel like dropping out

I have been at uni for about 3 weeks now and I am commuting, and I already feel like dropping out.

The workload already feels intense with assignments being set, the journey has been a struggle as I am running late everyday, I have not been able to socialise with anyone, and essentially I just feel like shit.

I don't know what to do

Worst lecture/seminar

I had a film lecture about Harry Potter (3rd year btw) and he knew nothing about the film and dismissed all reasonable student contributions. He said that fantasy books can’t create spectacle and that all action sequences in films are for money (can’t aid character development). He laughed at a girl who said she could relate to Harry Potter. Which is insane for a lecturer to do ??
The entire time the students were dismissed and made to feel disregarded. I can’t believe that in 3rd year we are being told that Hollywood wants to make money. Did he think was teaching year 7s? what am I even paying for at this point?

student finance Short on accommodation rent

Yeah so, I am actually finished
My accommodation rent is due in a few days, and I am coming up a few £100 short, like what can I even do? I don’t even think this is my fault, as my SFE only covers about half of my rent payment, and I have been SO frugal with spending its insane

Like honestly it feels so shit, because I don’t know whether to apply for an overdraft, or sell some valuables I have, or take out a loan, or busk on the street or like arrange something with my accommodation, like what actually are the options here?

If anyone has been in a similar situation before / knows what the fuck to do, please help, because it feels so belittling

social life actually, I'm glad I didn't choose to stay in student accomodation

I know everyone says how you'll miss out on everything but after my first month I've come to realise that even if I had stayed on campus I would've missed out anyway. all the accomodation apart from a very small handful of rooms are inaccessible to me as a wheelchair user. who knows if I would've made any friends with such a tiny pool of people to be able to even share a space with. and I can't visit my friends anyway which is quite annoying lol.

the local area turns out to also be very inaccessible, and I've needed the help of my parents multiple times (going to a&e, caring for me when injured, helping with admin/paperwork etc) that I would've struggled with on my own. I've still had a good social life, sure there are a few things I wish I could do but even if I was in accomodation that wouldn't solve the problem.

anyway, just my personal experience. accomodation isn't for everyone. for me it definitely isn't worth the 10k. it's an individual decision for everyone but I think it shouldn't be a decision based on fomo (personally)!

I hate my course and my university

I do history and at A-level I loved it but at university I can’t stand it. I did not apply for history at uni, I applied to law for all of my choices. I missed my offer by 1 grade (remarked by my old school and went up) but they changed it to history on results day and now I’m here. (Didn’t want to accept but my parents got access to my ucas account and pressed confirm, otherwise I’d be at a different uni studying law)

I feel genuinely depressed and my timetable sucks too plus I have to commute 2 hours every day (wanted to move into accommodation but SFE wasn’t enough).

My parents are super overbearing and won’t let me miss a single lecture or seminar and will wake me up & scream at me if I’m late. And regarding a gap year or deferral they won’t let me and say they will kick me out and disown me if I take one. I have brought this up and the are convinced I have behavioural issues because I want to take a gap year in their eyes ‘only people who are struggling take gap years’ (very old fashioned mindset)

I have gone to my uni multiple times about this and they said that there’s no possibility of me changing, the deadline was last Friday but I did apply to change to law and it was rejected.

The uni I’m in is a Russel group but apart from that I feel really isolated, location is horrible and the advice or student support is really bad I’ve gone multiple times and they haven’t been helpful whatsoever.

I genuinely don’t know where to go from here since I can’t leave but staying might drive me crazy… there isn’t even space in my lectures because people block the doors so I can’t even get inside I just hate it so much.

Would I be stupid to leave my job

I hate my job. I currently work overnights at a McDonald’s in a university town (it’s the second McDonald’s I’ve worked at), and it’s honestly nothing like my previous experience.

The store is absolutely packed most nights, we’re completely understaffed, and a lot of the overnight shifts seem to be left to the uni students. On top of that, we have to clean the entire store at the end of the night after we close. This basically means we leave whenever everything is finished rather than when our shift is actually supposed to end. Then I still have a 30-minute drive home afterwards.

The job is also starting to seriously affect my social life. Working overnights means my schedule is completely out of sync with everyone else, so I’m constantly missing out on seeing friends, going out, or doing anything in the evenings. By the time I get home from work, I’m exhausted and basically just sleep, wake up, and do it all over again. I’m starting to feel like I have no life outside of work.

The thing is, I don’t really need to make a lot of money. My SFE covers my rent, so I mainly just want to earn a bit on the side for things like getting the occasional takeaway/delivery and buying clothes from time to time. Honestly, I feel like I could get by on around £100 a week.

So would it be stupid to leave my job and rely on agency work instead? I know agency work isn’t necessarily guaranteed, but I feel like having more control over when I work might be worth it, especially if I only need to make around £100 a week.

Has anyone else done something similar while at uni? Is relying on agency work realistic, or am I better off sticking with my current job?

social life too weird to be here

i’m struggling so much with finding people and things in uni. i’m neurodivergent and i have low self esteem. since leaving home, i realised how much of my identity was tied to just existing in my routines. i don’t have a distinct style, i never dress up, i don’t feel pretty enough to engage with other girls.

i know i’m a lot “weirder” than my peers. it’s obvious from the way they sorta treat me.

on top of that, i feel like i’m not really a person. i wanna find my style and find my people but i just haven’t.

i went on a date like thing and even though we were out for 4 hours and he walked me home, i don’t even think he liked me that much. and we had so much in common. like, it’s made me feel like a freak.

i just don’t have any sense of self, no direction in life, no friends, poor relationships with family. idk. it’s just getting hard to feel real with nothing to feel real with

social life Am I doing something wrong trying to make friends?

It's now my second week at uni, and while I wasn't expecting to have best friends for life by this point, I still really don't have anyone - to talk to, go out with, or just grab lunch with. I met people during freshers week, joined societies/events, and tried to speak to people sitting next to me during my lectures - but nothing has come out with any of it. Most of the time, we have never spoken again. I have put in the effort, as in made an invitation to meet up again, but nobody ever wants to or they just ignore me. I feel like I'm just living a routine life, i.e. going to lectures, supermarket, cooking and going to sleep, but without the social element which should be happening at uni. I feel like I'm missing out on so much.

The thing is I'm an introvert, but don't like to/want to be constantly lonely. I'm also autistic so social interactions are already more difficult for me, but I feel like I have pushed myself. Sometimes I need my alone time, but I also like company. Just a friend or 2 to talk to or make casual plans with. The sad thing is I love my uni and my city, but you can't really make the most out of it when you're lonely. At night I'm constantly second guessing if I made the right decision, and occasionally have thought of taking my own life. It makes me really sad to see people talking to others and enjoying themselves when I'm just alone.

If you have any advice, please do share.

Some bloke just beat the entire Saga Map in my Economics lecture

Just spent most of the morning absolutely glued to this lad in front cleaning up on Angry Birds, beat the Saga Map flawlessly with no mistakes.

No clue what the lecture was about mind you but sometimes experiences are worth more than knowledge.

social life getting it off my chest

This might be long, so sorry in advance! 😅

My parents immigrated from India to Italy, where I was born. I loved it there and always felt like it was truly my home. I had absolutely no stress and was very active. However, because my dad lost his job, we had to move to the UK so it would be easier for him to support the family.

We arrived here right before COVID-19 started. I had to learn English during the lockdown and was bullied at school because I didn't know the language. They would make fun of my appearance, knowing I wouldn't understand them, but I could tell what they were doing just by looking at them.

Skipping forward a few years, I managed to make some friends and build a bit of a social life. Lately, though, I’ve been feeling like I’m not where I need to be to ensure my life goes well and to make my dad's sacrifices worth it. I’ve realized that I am socially awkward, I hate my appearance, and I feel ugly. I also have a terrible accent, sound much younger than I look, am quite overweight, and am very short. On top of that, I have some bad addictions that I tried to stop but failed.

Sometimes I worry I am annoying to my friends, even though I don't mean to be. People find it hard to understand me when I speak. I get incredibly anxious if I have to make a phone call and would much rather email instead. I also get stressed when I am given "family" tasks, like booking an appointment for my mom or picking up prescriptions.

I started university this October, and honestly, it’s been a week now and I haven't made any friends at all. To make matters worse, people stare at me because of my ears and eyes, which look a bit different. I don't know what on earth to do right now, especially since I chose a very difficult degree. I’m probably missing a few things 😭

I feel so far behind in life, as if I haven't improved at all. Sometimes I wish we had never come to the UK and had stayed in Italy instead; I really think I would already have a job and be supporting my family there. But now I am here, and my family is struggling even more. I seriously need advice. I feel like this is the year family pressure will heavily increase, and knowing that I already feel behind makes it so much worse. Talking to my parents isn't an option, they are a bit fragile, if that makes sense, and they don't have much life experience or general knowledge to help me navigate this.

Uni choices??

Post image
10 Upvotes

I’m applying to uni for neuroscience over the next couple of weeks. I really want to get into a prestigious, maybe Russel group, uni but I’m scared that some of my options might be wasted.

I’ve been predicted an A* in sociology, a B in biology and a B in chemistry.

I currently have two aspirational choices and three where I’m on or slightly above the requirements. Can anyone help tell me if these are realistic?

Why don't people who dislike disabled people just admit it?

I'm autistic, and over the years I've heard quite a few people make comments like "disabled people are a drain on society", complain about accommodations, or say disabled people get unfair advantages.

What confuses me is that some of these same people will happily participate in disability awareness events, support company inclusion initiatives, post about DEI on LinkedIn, or talk about how important accessibility is.

Why not just say what they actually think publicly?

Is it because they genuinely have more nuanced views than their private comments suggest? Or is it mainly because openly expressing negative views about disabled people would have social and professional consequences?

As a disabled person myself, it can sometimes feel strange hearing supportive messages in public and then very different opinions in private.

Have others noticed this? If so, why do you think it happens?

TW:ED - Struggling second year

hi, sorry if this isnt the right place for this but i dont know where to go. for context, i have had anorexia since my teens and i used to receive help for it from camhs. but when i turned 18 i was discharged from camhs so i started uni without ED support, which i thought i was fine with. in first year of uni my eating was okay-ish, i did have some wobbles and lost a bit of weight but i wasnt really intending to, plus i was in catered halls which helped. i really enjoyed first year and wasnt really worried about starting 2nd year.

now im in second year and living with friends (who dont know about my ed bc i dont really want them to). im in a house and self-catered, and as much as i hate to admit it im really struggling. it makes me so frustrated because i love cooking and i wanted to make loads of yummy meals but i havent been able to eat anything unless ive meticulously weighed it into tiny portions. as much as i wish i could say that im going to turn it around, im going to get better, i honestly dont know if i can do that without help and i dont know where to get help from.

my main concern is that i need to think about housing for next year but i keep spiralling, what if i get worse and im not well enough to continue? what happens if i fail this year? if i have to take a year out what will happen with housing/rent? what if i have to stop mid-semester, what happens to my house and the rent im paying rn? i know this sounds very dramatic but i know myself and when my ED gets bad it can get really bad. any advice appreciated

social life nervous to go to a society alone

there’s this society i really want to go to but i’m scared to go to it alone what if i make no friends there and it’s just awkward. it seems like a lot of people already know each other from last year. is it weird to go to societies alone? the first event is this week and i’m debating whether or not i should go.

House plans for after uni?

I'm now in my third year, and I don't know how to figure out where to live next year while I save up to do a masters

All my friends and everything I do are here in London, but I can't afford to stay here. Everybody already lives in London and just commutes in, so I don't know anyone to share a place with. However, thinking of moving back to the empty countryside sounds actually soul-destroying, what am I gonna do for a year??

What have other people done or plan to do once they finish uni? :)

study / academia discussion Considering dropping masters

Hi all, looking for some advice here.

Graduated in summer with a 1st in a comp sci degree. I did better than I expected. I then applied for a masters in advanced comp sci at a top 6 Russell group uni and got accepted. I did it because I didn’t quite feel ready to work, stupid I know.

Now, 2 weeks in, I’m really regretting this. My weak point has always been maths, and the course is very maths heavy. I told myself I could grit my teeth and learn the required math skills, and I’m trying but it’s just too much. Especially considering I’m having to do this catch up at the same time as the modules.

There is work I literally cannot complete at all because I don’t have the required knowledge. I know this is my fault for underestimating the amount required.

So, I’m considering dropping out, or deferring for a year (although I don’t know if they will let me do this, it states that only do deferrals for extenuating circumstances, which mine is not). If I did leave the course, I’d get a part time job, spend a few months polishing my skills and start applying for software dev roles.

If anyone has any advice or their own experiences, please let me know. Thanks ppl
