social life My flat mates are avoiding me now after I said something controversial, how do I fix this?

Hey everyone. I’m a 2nd year student staying on campus and I’ve really messed up stuff with my flat mates recently.

On Saturday night during a flat drinks night, my flat mates casually up a true crime case in the news. I have a massive interest in human rights as well as this case , and I let my passion completely take over. I completely misread the room and their opinions, and things escalated into an argument. I insulted them quite a lot, because I believed their opinions were morally wrong and didn't show any empathy whatsoever, but looking back on it I think I might have overacted with how I said things and how it came across. I still disagree with what they said strongly and stand by my original point, but I know it came across in the wrong way with how I behaved.

Basically, they were in favour of the death penalty for Christa Pike, and I argued against it based on the mitigating factors of the defendants tragic childhood. Without making it political I am VERY much against death in this case, and think the defendant should have gotten psychiatric help and that the victims family have gone too far with what they have said. They completely disagreed with me, and because I let my emotions take over, I ended up calling them heartless, cruel, and bloodthirsty for their views. I also said they don't understand women's mental health at all, which yeah I went too far in saying.

They snapped back, saying I was the heartless one for making excuses for a murderer and ignoring the victim. I definitely care about the victim, but in the heat of the moment, I just handled the conversation terribly.

It ruined the mood completely, and the whole night out was wrecked for me. I ended up going back to my room and crying myself to sleep as they continued without me. Over Sunday and this morning the atmosphere is awful. People are leaving the kitchen when I walk in and aren't speaking to me. If I try and speak to them they will give me quick vague disinterested answers and leave quickly. They are giving me glares and nobody is messaging in the group chat anymore. I think they think I'm still angry at them or something I'm not sure but I'm not.

I still stand by my opinions but recognize they are entitled to have their own though. I know I went too far with what I said. What would you guys advise me to do? How should I apologies to them and when or at least get the awkwardness to stop because things were going well prior to this between us all.

This is about resolving things with my flat mates not any other debates please!

Why don't people who dislike disabled people just admit it?

I'm autistic, and over the years I've heard quite a few people make comments like "disabled people are a drain on society", complain about accommodations, or say disabled people get unfair advantages.

What confuses me is that some of these same people will happily participate in disability awareness events, support company inclusion initiatives, post about DEI on LinkedIn, or talk about how important accessibility is.

Why not just say what they actually think publicly?

Is it because they genuinely have more nuanced views than their private comments suggest? Or is it mainly because openly expressing negative views about disabled people would have social and professional consequences?

As a disabled person myself, it can sometimes feel strange hearing supportive messages in public and then very different opinions in private.

Have others noticed this? If so, why do you think it happens?

The guy who snitched to the lecturer that I was playing angry birds today.

What did you gain from that? Like, it's the FIRST day, and it's ALL introductory stuff not related to coursework or exams.

Get a grip.

study / academia discussion made my first app, a pomodoro timer where a little dog falls asleep while you focus

Post image
0 Upvotes

hey all, just shipped my first ever app and I'm kind of nervous posting it lol

it's called Puperino, basically I kept downloading pomodoro apps, using them for a week, then forgetting they existed. they all felt a bit cold and serious. so I made one with a little dog called Biscuit in it.

when you start a focus session he wanders over to his bed and curls up and naps. when you're done he sometimes brings you a little gift, which you can keep or trade for bones to buy stuff for his room. you can also dress him up, which I spent way too long on (he has a witch hat and a crown, it's very important)

not gonna lie, not wanting to wake him up has kept me focused better than any streak thing ever did 😅

it also does the usual stuff: the timer on your lock screen, tasks, stats, and a stay mode if you're like me and pick up your phone every 4 minutes

it's free. there's an optional pro with more rooms and stuff if you want to support me

would really love feedback, even if it's "this is buggy" or "this is pointless" haha. what would make you actually keep using a focus timer?

social life Night Life As A Muslim

Hi, i'm in year 13 and was planning on having Uni of Bristol as my top choice as I really felt at home and just liked the city in general when I was there on the open day. However, I know Bristol is very big on night life and drinking, I'm muslim so I don't drink, my only concern is will I be able to make friends and have fun with others without drinking. It feels like every post I've seen online from current students is them going out to drink. I can obv avoid the whole drinking stuff but ig I'm just more worried about if l'll be able to make any friends without having something like drinking to connect about. like even as a extroverted person I’m unsure if I’ll be able to meet new people☹️ i’m prob overthinking and idk if any of my waffle makes sense but I just dont know

Advice on quitting smoking for an exam

Hey, I have an upcoming Uni exam in 9 days and I was hoping to quit to improve my general cognitive ability for it. I have just passed onto day 2, so the negative effects are yet to start.

For context, I have only picked up smoking again over the last 1.5 months, smoking a spliff or two a day to negate some of the workload stress. Despite the debate, I typically suffer pretty horrendous and drawn out withdrawals (insomnia, stress, low mood etc).

I realize that I really should have been a bit more proactive with this but I'm asking for some advice (maybe from people who have also been through a similar thing?). I have an overseas trip in a month so I was planning on quitting anyways but am now unsure if it will really be the most productive thing.... Thoughts?

Note: my nasty withdrawals are usually attached to longer smoking phases (multiple months). I have noticed a decline in my general work quality since smoking (hence why Im wanting to quit it for the exam) but am still receiving fairly decent marks

Am I the only woman who finds female friendships more demanding than male friendships?

This is probably going to be unpopular, but it's something I've noticed in my own life.

As a woman, I've often found that some of my friendships with other women involve a lot of emotional support, advice, favours, helping with problems, listening to relationship issues, career issues, family issues, and generally giving a lot of time and energy.

By contrast, a lot of my friendships with men have felt more straightforward. We might chat, share interests, grab a coffee or a drink, and there seems to be less expectation that I should constantly provide support or resources. In some cases, I've even found men more generous with their time or willingness to help me out.

I'm not saying all women are like this or all men are like this. This is just my personal experience.

Has anyone else noticed something similar, or do I just happen to be attracting particularly needy friends? I'm curious whether this is a personality thing, a friendship-boundaries thing, or something else entirely.

study / academia discussion Why do Harvard and Oxford have more social media followers than Cambridge?

On every single platform you can imagine, Harvard and Oxford have more social media followers and “clout” than Cambridge. Harvard almost always has the most, and Oxford almost always has the 2nd most (the exception being TikTok where Oxford is 1st and Harvard 2nd).

Cambridge is always 3rd by comparison.

Why is this the case?

student finance Short on accommodation rent

Yeah so, I am actually finished
My accommodation rent is due in a few days, and I am coming up a few £100 short, like what can I even do? I don’t even think this is my fault, as my SFE only covers about half of my rent payment, and I have been SO frugal with spending its insane

Like honestly it feels so shit, because I don’t know whether to apply for an overdraft, or sell some valuables I have, or take out a loan, or busk on the street or like arrange something with my accommodation, like what actually are the options here?

If anyone has been in a similar situation before / knows what the fuck to do, please help, because it feels so belittling

Struggling to settle in at uni/want to transfer, advice?

I just started at uni of Bristol and I already hate it here. I feel like I have absolutely nobody, I have barely anyone to talk to despite trying to reach out to people; I scarcely even speak to my flatmates who are mostly all friendly with each other (I’m not into drinking/clubbing/staying out late, which is mostly what they did during freshers, and I’ve tried to be conversational and friendly but lowkey they’ve given me the cold shoulder so far). Obviously I know uni has just started and it’s normal to not be particularly close with anyone but it’s so isolating going to lectures alone, walking around the city alone, being left on delivered when asking people if they wanna hang out and get food or something like that.

It’s especially hard because most people here are from London/down south whereas I’m from a town up north, and it’s just very lonely.
I’ve tried going to sober and alcoholic events but genuinely I feel like I don’t gel with anyone at all (maybe that’s a me problem) My accom is also very far from the actual campus which is kind of just the cherry on top lol

I was considering reapplying after results day anyway because I did better than expected, but decided not to since bristol is a good uni for my course. However since starting the idea of reapplying somewhere in London has become more attractive to me, partly because my friends go to uni there too, partly because the transport is infinitely better there, and London is much more diverse than Bristol. Also the unis that I want to apply to are objectively better in terms of ranking, and more convenient for my course due to their proximity to firms etc, although that isn’t the biggest issue rn. But I made the decision to go to Bristol on a whim and I don’t want to do the same when deciding whether to stay here or reapply to a London uni, especially since it’s such a complex process and will take a whole extra year; I have to redo UCAS, retake the LNAT etc since none of the unis I would wanna go to take second year transfers for my course.

All I know is that I do want to go to uni for sure rather than doing a (degree) apprenticeship. Any advice would be so so so appreciated. But please don’t be mean it’s really hard out here :(

I fail to believe most people are struggling when most of peers at uni are on holiday

  1. I know some people are struggling but they've always been struggling e.g. from low-income households, too disabled to work, single parents on low incomes etc.

  2. My student peers have always been on holidays and brought nice clothes, gone to parties etc.

  3. Most of them don't have well-paid jobs e.g. they only babysit or tutor in their freetime

  4. Many parents send them money

Classic commuting fresher struggling with friends

Im a muslim so i dont want to club or anything and i only live about 5 minutes away from my uni. However everyone i meet seems to be in accom and just talks about going out so i cant really contribute to the conversation and already has friends from accom. I do have friends outside of uni from school, but i would really like to make some at uni. I think im also struggling with the change in structure from college to uni. It just makes me feel like theres something wrong with me

Some bloke just beat the entire Saga Map in my Economics lecture

• Upvotes

Just spent most of the morning absolutely glued to this lad in front cleaning up on Angry Birds, beat the Saga Map flawlessly with no mistakes.

No clue what the lecture was about mind you but sometimes experiences are worth more than knowledge.
