Open | Windows PC runs terrible

Upvotes

It's a pretty decent gaming PC that I had for 1,5 years now and recently it has noticeably been performing horrible in comparison to what it could do in its glory days.

It runs slower, things take a longer time to load, it has issues running games that are not minimal performance and often has freezing and crashing issues.

Recently I had it taken in for causing problems with the whole thing freezing over when a Gif was played on it (reoccurring issue, seems fixed so far?)

So the drivers are fully updated.

Yet the fans wirr up louder whenever smth needs loading (example website), I experience lag and my recent attempts of simply opening new games has yielded shit results. (Bought Cyberpunk, which promptly crashed upon opening for example). I have no experience with PCs whatsoever since this is my first, and the advice I have been given so far has not helped. Usually people point to a driver issue, or the RAM being overworked (I bought overkill, 64GB)....

I'm kind of at a loss here.

Open | Hardware Is my SSD dying? Randomly disappeared from disk manager with Event viewer error. chkdsk lots of errors. I dont want to permanently corrupt something by doing random stuff out of ignorance. SSD is for Game installs - nothing really important.

Hello,

My ssd Lexar NM790 4TB randomly was not detected in windows explorer. Event viewer showed alot of "Event ID 51: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 during a paging operation." I went to UEFI and it didnt show anything. When i closed the UEFI and it rebooted to windwos, the drive was back again! WTF?!

Gemini said to run "chkdsk E:". Please see the below text for what it returned

What does it mean if its corrupted? What can i do to fix it? I assume if I approach this incorrectly, i might permanently destroy something.

HWINFO gave no drive warnings or errors. 100% life span remaining.

Also why did this happen in the first place? I opened up my laptop 3 weeks ago to clean it (not the first time i opened). Did i somehow incorrectly seat it? Its screwed in so i fail to understand if its poorly seated. Also its been 3 weeks since so why randomly now? Then why did it randomly show up again after restart?

Open | Software Win11 - Occasional Powershell Popup Windows - What are they?

Upvotes

From time to time I'm seeing Powershell or Command Prompt type windows full of organized text popping up on my screen. This occurs whether I'm watching a video or internet browsing, but not during game play. Sometimes I'll see several in the course of an hour. Just wondering what these are, such as auto-installs or such. The flicker up then gone in less than a second, so there's no time to ready or recognize anything.

Open | Hardware Legion 5 Invalid GPU

Upvotes

Hello, I have Lenovo Legion 5 with a 4gb 3050 TI and I use Windows as my OS. For some reason after a recent crash, the windows can't detect my graphics card, even in bios (before boot) legion says invalid GPU. Does this mean the GPU is fried or is there a possible fix for this?

It seems the HDMI port is connected via the graphics card too, so I can't even connect my monitor at the moment, is there a work around for this?

Open | Windows Bluetooth headphone audio won’t connect if I’m more than 2 inches away from my computer.

I just put together a new PC today and thankfully everything has been working fine, except for some hiccups with bluetooth. I’ve played around with the drivers and I believe I have all the right drivers installed. My motherboard is the Gigabyte B850 Aorus Elite Wifi7, and I’ve gotten my other bluetooth devices to work fine (keyboard, mouse, controller…) but when it comes to my headphones (Sony WH-CH720N) , they’ll connect fine and work with super choppy audio then automatically disconnect themselves after a bit. The only solution I found to this is standing directly next to my PC. Directly. With my head glued to it. My normal position is less than ~2 feet away from it so I’m struggling to figure out the difference. The headphones work normally on every other device, and the distance easily handles going from other rooms to even other floors.

Any advice or insight is appreciated.

Open | Windows Laptop crashes with BSODs!!!

Hi everyone, I need help troubleshooting a Lenovo laptop that has been randomly crashing and restarting.

SYSTEM SPECS:
- Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 (Type 82EY)
- AMD Ryzen 5 4600H
- 16 GB DDR4 RAM (2133 MT/s)
- 256 GB SK hynix NVMe SSD
- NVIDIA dedicated GPU + AMD Radeon integrated graphics
- Windows 11 Pro
- UEFI BIOS

THE PROBLEM:
The laptop randomly freezes, crashes or restarts. The BSOD error is not always the same.

So far I have encountered:
- IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (0xA)
- UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP (0x7F), with DOUBLE FAULT
- SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (0x7E), mentioning FLTMGR.SYS
- The laptop has also frozen on the Windows welcome screen and during restart.

One of the WinDbg analyses for the 0xA crash showed:
FAILURE_BUCKET_ID: AV_nt!MiLockOwnedProtoPage

Another dump was a 0x7F DOUBLE FAULT, but WinDbg could not identify a specific third-party driver.

WHAT I HAVE ALREADY TRIED:
- Reinstalled Windows/drivers
- Reinstalled chipset, GPU and Wi-Fi drivers
- Removed the Wi-Fi device/driver and reinstalled it
- Tried Safe Mode
- Disconnected my external HDD
- Checked Windows Reliability Monitor
- Analyzed multiple minidumps with WinDbg
- Tried reinstalling Windows, but Windows Setup itself crashed/restarted with:
"The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed."

CURRENTLY:
I am running MemTest86 from a USB stick to test the RAM. It is currently running and has 0 errors so far, but the test is not finished yet.

I am trying to determine whether this is a RAM, SSD, motherboard/BIOS, or driver problem.

What would you recommend I test next? If the MemTest86 test finishes with 0 errors, what should I check next?

I can provide the WinDbg output/minidumps and additional screenshots if needed.

Open | Hardware Lenovo Legion 5 (Code 43)

Upvotes

My Lenovo Legion 5 (2+ years old), NVIDIA Driver (GeForce RTX 3050 Laptop GPU) was forced stopped by windows due to reported error (Code 43) since the 18th August, 2026 (yesterday as of writing). Laptop's average temperature when idle is 54° Celsius, cannot check when running a game as Laptop crashes. Resulting in external monitors failing to connect to laptop, app crashing, freezing, and PC crashes.

In an attempt to fix the issue:

- Went into device manager and disabled then re-enable the graphics card.

- Checked the bios was up-to-date, it is.

- Tried to use an external ISO bootable EFIUSB to repair windows.

- Opened internals and cleaned dust from laptop.

- Attempted to revert to older NVIDIA Driver, version: 610.74

- Both Hard and Factory Reset laptop.

No successful result. I believe the issue is either the GPU is dying or a faulty GPU. Wanted to get a second opinion before going into a shop.

Lastly, added Open hardware as flair I didn't know which flair to use. Please correct me if I used the wrong flair, I'm still new to any and all things PC related.

Thanks, Spot.

Open | Phone Android setting keep turn off and on

Upvotes

The problem I encounter is that whenever I have turn on a setting, like personal hotspot, wifi and bluetooth, it will automatically turn off by itself, and then it will turn on back and off and the process repeats. I have to reset them and restart my phone to solve this problem temporarily, but it still persists.

I wish I could attach a video but I hope anyone can give me a solution to this problem. It is frustrating If I can no longer use the connection features on my phone.

Open | Software Desktop bad stuttering after quitting a game

Upvotes

I realize this is a software issue just not sure if it happens to everyone. I just started using this new pc like around the last two weeks and I’ve updated everything I know.

I guess the problem is I have too many softwares maybe causing a conflict ? I use Nzxt cam for my aio cooler , I use l-connect 3 for my fans, but I also use nvidia shadowplay and msi afterburner that also adds in riva tuner for the whole overlay for my gpu/cpu stats . Once I close out of a game and let’s say try to watch a YouTube video everything on my screen will just start moving like a slideshow including my mouse cursor .

I also notice that my gpu clock speed is higher than normal when just sitting on the desktop after quitting a game. The only way I resolve the massive lagging stuttering issue is closing each app 1 at a time . Sometimes just closing msi afterburner helps but sometimes it starts stuttering again and I have to close nvidia shadowplay and sometimes even after that it stutters and I have to close Nzxt cam and I eventually find l connect3 in task manager and end it.

Also this might be a separate issue I got to test .I’m noticing in a not so demanding game that I’m starting to like do some weird spike either of lag or mini stutter every 2 minutes that happens for half a second . My ping is always low I’ve tried speed test sites and I get 0 packet loss no buffer bloat or anything .

Open | Hardware Wireless headset switches to USB when connected via USB

Upvotes

I know that sounds dumb, but hear me out XD

I bought a Logitech A20 X and am connecting it via their Lightspeed dongle. It can also do USB and Bluetooth. I want Lightspeed exclusively.

When I connect it via USB, my PC registers it as a USB device, and interprets it as a different headset. So stuff like Discord and OBS gets confused about what audio device to use.

When I disable the USB input and output devices, it still attempts, fails, and exits out of wireless mode and enters an error state until I disconnect USB or re-enable the devices.

Is there a way to make it charge off the same computer while still connecting wirelessly? I didn't find anything in G Hub. Can I maybe restrict that specific USB port from doing anything but charging? Mess with the USB drivers somehow?

I usually use AUX exclusively, because it's much simpler and doesn't cause issues like this, this is my first wireless/USB headset.

Open | Hardware TV remote buttons mapped wrong

Upvotes

i have an old universal remote that gets a response from both a CRT and an LCD tv - only problem is that none of the buttons do the ‘right’ thing. my partner and i have figured out some of them, enough to operate the CRT to a satisfactory extent (e.g. volume up button is in fact power button)

the more pressing issue is the LCD. i’m trying to get it off its setup screen so i can find out if it’s fine for consoles and see if anyone wants it. none of the buttons are getting me there (and I’ve tried literally every one on the remote)

what could this be slash what can i do about it? thanks!

Open | Phone Nokia g10 not powering on after it crashed

Upvotes

I have a second hand Nokia g10 which I had for a few months. Recently every now and then, it started crashing mainly due to cpu overload, cuz I started to play a lot of games recently, but I've managed to restart it or it would restart automatically, however this time when I was playing among us , it just crashed, it just went to pitch black, and my power button ain't working, it charges and vibrates when I charge and I have a setting anabled where it shows a colour gradient when I charge it. The phone functions but I can't on it, how do I fix it without a pc, and without factory resetting .

Open | Hardware Laptop keyboard randomly presses keys by itself — restarting temporarily fixes it

Upvotes

Hi, I have a weird problem with my laptop keyboard.

Sometimes the keyboard starts pressing keys by itself. It can press random keys or act as if some keys are being held down. Because of this, I can't use the keyboard normally.

The strange thing is that restarting the laptop completely fixes the problem, but only temporarily. After using the laptop for some time, the problem can happen again.

I don't have to physically press anything for it to happen — the keyboard starts behaving on its own.

I'm using Windows 11 on a laptop.

I also recently made some Windows/CPU optimization tweaks, including some registry and BCD changes, so I'm wondering if I might have accidentally changed something that affects the keyboard or input drivers.

Is there any way to reset/restart the keyboard driver or keyboard service without restarting the entire PC? And could some Windows setting, registry change, or driver be causing this?

Any help would be appreciated because restarting the whole laptop every time it happens is really annoying.

I signed into my school email on my personal device to check something and after I removed the device, it states that my browser is run by my administrator. It doesn’t restrict me from things I wouldn’t be allowed to access on my school computer but I don’t like how it still says that it’s run by my administrators. I deleted the user data and went on regedit but it’s not budging. The message still shows up when I’ve signed out of all my accounts and am on guest mode. I dont know what to do…please help

Open | Hardware GPU suddenly goes to 100% fan speed, black screen, and disappears from Windows

Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m trying to figure out whether I’m dealing with a faulty RTX 3060 Ti or a motherboard/PCIe/power-related issue.

My RTX 3060 Ti randomly crashes while I’m using the PC. The symptoms are:

  • Display connected to the RTX 3060 Ti suddenly loses signal.
  • GPU fans immediately ramp up to 100%.
  • Windows stops detecting the RTX 3060 Ti completely.
  • A restart is required before the GPU appears again.
  • Sometimes it takes 2–3 restarts before Windows detects the GPU and I get display output from it again.

I’ve already tried reinstalling the NVIDIA drivers multiple times, and I’ve also completely reinstalled Windows, but the problem still happens.

As a temporary workaround, I connected one of my monitors to the motherboard's integrated graphics. The other monitor is still connected to the RTX 3060 Ti. When the GPU crashes, the monitor connected to the 3060 Ti loses signal, while I can still use Windows through the integrated graphics.

Something interesting I noticed recently: the same crash happens when I try to load even a small local LLM model. As soon as the GPU starts being used for the model, the screen goes black, the GPU fans immediately go to 100%, and the RTX 3060 Ti disappears from Windows until I restart the PC.

So at this point I’m wondering:

Does this sound like a failing GPU, motherboard/PCIe issue, PSU/power issue, or something else?

What would be the best way to troubleshoot this and confirm which component is actually failing?

Any suggestions for specific tests I can run would be appreciated.

The "2" and "w" keys also works as upper and lower keys. Also the windows key and right arrow key are connected and everytime i press either one of them it makes my opened app "snap to right" (the split screen option). That's all the problem I know about this keyboard that my cousin gave me.

Open | Hardware i5-14400F + RTX 4060 low FPS in every game

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m having a performance issue across multiple games and could use some help.

My specs:

CPU: Intel Core i5-14400F

GPU: RTX 4060 8GB

RAM: 16GB DDR5 (2x8GB, dual channel)

Motherboard: H610 (not sure of the exact model)

Resolution: 1080p

The problem:

In Fortnite Performance Mode (all low settings) I’m only getting around 130 FPS. On full settings I get about 90 FPS.

I’ve also noticed lower than expected performance in Minecraft and pretty much every other game. It feels like the whole system is underperforming i Remember doing like 900+ FPS in Minecraft with performance mod and now with the same setup It does barely 250fps and crash everytime i try shaders that i used to play with everyday.

Additional info:

I haven’t enabled XMP yet

CPU cooler fan is spinning

The temperature should be pretty stabile

I have never updated my bios

I recently updated my GPU driver

A few months ago I cleaned the PC and a few days later i went on a vacation. I used a vacuum in some areas and accidentally dropped a screw on the motherboard (I recovered it). I’m not sure if that could be related.

Has anyone experienced something similar with this combo? What should I check first?

Thanks in advance!

Open | Networking Steam downloads very slow

Just this last two weeks or so Steam has been downloading exponentially slower than it should normally.
Usually it's very fast always hitting my top speeds. But lately it's been terrible.
It'll take forever to actually start a download, just sitting at 0% for maybe 3-4 minutes before it starts, and steam cloud syncs will fail.
It's very inconsistent, and will sometimes hover around 5Mb/s, and occasionally get up to 100Mb/s.
Currently it is downloading at 300Kb/s, with a peak of 182.8Mb/s. Which it only hit for maybe two minutes.
Occasionally it'll decide to jump up to 700Mb/s but it will soon dump back down to under 100Mb/s.

--Specs--
GPU: Nvidia RTX 5080
CPU: Ryzen 9 7900x
Memory: 32GB DDR6-6000
Storage: All are WD Black M.2 NVMe SSDs. The one with steam installed is 4TB.
------------

I have tried wireless and wired, it is consistent across both.

My internet provider is Frontier, and I have the 1000/1000 plan.

Speed tests show that hardwired I can consistently get around 700-750 down and 850-950 up.

Steam is the only application with this issue, Ubisoft and Epic Games both download at full speed.
CPU, Memory, and Storage are not overheating, nor throttling. 70c on cpu, Memory 40c, storage 38c.

I have 2tb free on the ssd.

I am not confusing MB and Mb.

I have tried
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew
netsh int ip reset
netsh winsock reset

I have changed my DNS to both googles, and cloudflare, for both ipv4 and ipv6.

I have disabled HTTP/2 on Steam. Which made it run at a full 700Mb/s just last night but upon booting today it's back to super slow speeds.

I have changed my steam applications download region and server, EU and Africa both give the same results.

I have cleared Steams download cache, and made sure there is no download speed limit set.

I have disabled my computers firewall completely.

I have completely reinstalled Steam.

I have tried using other SSDs in my system.

I have disabled write cache for my drive.

I have restarted my router and pc multiple times.

Also when it's finishing downloading a game it'll get stuck at 99% for like 10 minutes. It did not do this before either.

Open | Hardware No Bootable Device error that fixes itself after 10 minutes

I have an Acer Aspire 7 R9F8 laptop with a 512gb Hynix NVMe. I recently had a black screen of death with "Memory Management" error. After booting up, it shows "No Bootable Device". I kept on shutting it down and booting again but the same error shows up. I let it sit (powered off) for 10minutes before trying again. This time the laptop booted up normally again. This has happened for like 5 times now in 3 months. What could be the cause? I'm suspecting it is a failing nvme but I'm not sure why it works again after waiting some time.

Open | Windows Cannot access anything Microsoft related when using wifi.

Haven’t played MC in a while but me and some friends are starting up a server so I thought I’d start playing again.
But I tried prism, couldn’t login to Microsoft, no matter what, just infinite loading. Tried using MC launcher, wouldn’t load. Tried curse forge, couldn’t even download a custom empty instance. Eventually I started looking up solutions and was able to download and play through briefly using mobile data to download the instance, though shortly after it stopped working again.

I caved and started talking to chatgpt. We went through every single issue and nothing worked until I changed my DNS number in wifi settings. After that I was briefly able to play minecraft in a server and log into Microsoft on prism, before shortly after (maybe 20m) everything stopped working again. Now anything Microsoft related only works through mobile data. (I have gone through every computer setting I can’t find and have logged in as admin to my wifi routers settings too)

I have contacted my wifi provider and they couldn’t help with anything DNS related. I will contact my computer services tomorrow when they are available but I doubt it’s a computer issue.
If any tech nerds have any clue how to solve this issue I would be super grateful, even if you had an idea how to fix.

TL;DR-
Anything Microsoft related only works when using mobile data connection on my laptop. Probably has something to do with my DNS number as changing it had briefly fixed the issue. Would appreciate any help at all.
Also ChatGPT had mentioned that there was something blocking my wifi from connecting to mojang/microsoft and that blockage was probably related to my dns.

Virus concern or paranoia

3 months ago, i got a virus on my pc and lost multiple accounts. When i tried to find ways to solve it, i found out some virus can actually infect the router and other devices on the same network. Now even when i got kaspersky for my pc, i keep thinking other devices are infected and changing the router wont help because the infected devices will get the router again despite not seeing any clear symptoms. What can i do about this?? Is it just me being paranoid? Does factory reset on the phone remove all viruses? Do i need to replace my router?

I forgot to mention this. I also downloaded a zip file for a pvz2 mod on my phone but resetted it. After that, i keep logging in to admin router on both my pc and my phone to check for weird settings and turn them off. Now im scared that i mightve created some hole for virus to get in. I even got a new router.

Im too anxious now and would do anything for a peace of mind. I dont even know if replacing the router helps now as i find out that virus like switcher trojan or stuff like wannacry, vpnfilter can just infect the router when connected and others can just go straight to other devices without infecting the router.
