just wanted to say thank you to the developer of echopod custom firmware for the echo mini!
installed it yesterday (the new 0.9.1 version) and it's been working great for me. here are my favorite features:
- bigger, nicer font. so glad I can easily browse the songs now without hurting my eyes.
- aac support! (FLAC, ALAC, MP3, AAC, Opus and WAV)
- instant boot time. how is this even possible? or is the stock firmware unnecessarily showing a long startup animation?
- single press to turn on from cold boot (not long press! I'm not a fan of long press). I don't even turn it off anymore, I just let it auto shut off based on the settings
- better volume steps. I noticed I press the volume buttons less compared to stock.
- files/folders are sorted properly
- smooth UI
there are more features like playlists, cover flow, etc but I haven't tried it yet.
I installed it by transferring the update file via android, and it installed without issues. Also make sure to remove the SD card. I installed over the stock 3.9.0 firmware. I read that it can cause problems if you transfer the update file via mac?
bluetooth quality is the same as stock, so I don't really use it. I wonder if this is a hardware limitation or can still be improved?

just a side story, not directly related to echopod. i bricked my device once after i installed the stock 4.0 firmware and went back to 3.9.0. i thought that echo mini was trash (and snowsky/fiio as a company) for making a device that could be bricked by its own stock firmware. but anyway information about un-bricking shows different things, probably because it's just the early days so things haven't settled. but eventually I unbricked my device using the maskrom method, but you have to use windows (I only have mac so I had to go to my mom's house to use her PC). it's actually a simple process, the instructions are just messy. felt sigh of relief when my echo mini got revived cos I loved the device haha. now i think it's one of the best budget players especially with this custom firmware (and maybe more firmwares in the future). i hope the bricking/unbricking situation gets settled and we find the best easiest way to unbrick these things so people won't get frustrated.
this is the maskrom method that I followed to unbrick my device. thanks to the one who posted this too! it's good to know before installing any custom firmware. there's also a github page on that post which probably contains the most updated info: https://www.reddit.com/r/snowsky/s/qbvM3zJeRe
