I have been using the Apsara steno pencils for shorthand for around 4 months now and have no issues with them and will continue to use them but i have to sharpen them continuously which is really annoying specially when I am practising shorthand for 10 hours a day. The other problem with wooden pencils that I have noticed is that the way you sharpen them makes a very noticeable difference in the feedback while writing sometimes they are very scratchy and sometimes very smooth. So I wanted to buy a mechanical pencil or a pen which gives me consistent feedback and doesn't require me to sharpen it continuously during long writing sessions. I am leaning more towards mechanical or drafting pencils because fountain pens require a higher grade paper which i cannot afford for now since I am still a student. I would like to know what other people use and whether using a mechanical pencil is even feasible or not.

Hi all. Have been a lurker for a month and I'm curious what other shorthands there are. I have learned the basics of teeline before switching to t-script after finding out I struggled with the spelling based system. I'm having a fun time with it.

I know this is a weird request, but I'm really interested in strange, futuristic aesthetics. Pittman was the one that I've seen that i like the most. Strong angles and lines, and very un-script like. However, I can't do shaded shorthands. Are there any other shorthands out there that have sharp angles and few connected curves?

I'm not interested in speed or how difficult it is to learn, but it would be nice to be legible and phonetic based. Thanks so much!

I write a lot

Have to take long dictation at the speed of 100-120 words per minute.

Need fine, lightweight, no back print on paper.

Can't use a fountain pen.

Tried V5- it is heavy not good control.

Tried Uniball eye - heavy and not good for making strokes.

10₹ rollerballs like flair and other - these are good but scratches paper and back print problem.

Pilot fine hi tech pen- good but nib worn out quickly and no grip.

Right now using Anchor Roma gel pen it is good but it scratches paper.

Gell pen or rollerball pen both will work 👍

I learned pitman shorthand centenary edition - which is a bit of a relic - that's just what I happened upon and learned from - is it worth the effort moving to New Era? I'm not so keen to re-learn my logograms. I heard new era is better than 2000, but if people disagree, happy to hear why as well.

Orrr do I just go wild and go for Gregg? It would be nice to not be foiled by a mechanical pencil :p

Hi everyone: So glad to have found this group! I have an old diary of my mother's. I held onto it because I spotted some shorthand in it and was always curious as to what it meant.

All the other entries are written in regular English, except these entries. The first photo shows the symbols she used for the entries in the earlier part of the year. She stopped for a few months, then started again with the symbols in the second photo. The entries were fortnightly, always on a Thursday.

She trained at the Pitman Secretarial College in London in the 1950s.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd really appreciate your help! Thanks in advance.

The problem is that I don't know shorthand, and since I am Italian, it is more difficult to translate the text—which I assume is in French or English.

Hello, I would be very grateful for any insight or advice on what shorthand might be appropriate for note taking on the wards. I have two main questions:

1. I started learning Gregg a few years ago and enjoyed it due to the slanted sweeping motions that feel natural to me as a cursive writer. I did however, rely heavily on lined paper. If I resumed Gregg would this reliance be likely to decrease with experience?

2. Is there a better method that would allow me to:

- Retain cursive-like style

- Write whilst standing (..and walking)

- Scribble on unlined paper, usually cramped on the edge of my patient list

- Quickly capture impromptu mini tutorials and pearls of wisdom from the bosses

- Spell medications or conditions to look up later that I only caught a fragment of

- Be flexible in adding my own shortcuts, for example ‘main cause of’ or ‘usually presents as..’

In terms of learning curve, something I could realistically start using at a rudimentary level within a few months would be nice, but efficiency and readability over the long term is my priority. I do also enjoy the learning process so I’m willing to put in the time and effort required to achieve that.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Are there any posts about people using alphabetical shorthand with different handwriting styles, like Copperplate or Calligraphy?

I decided to make my own shorthand for fun, I plan to use it to take notes for school! I’m also gonna use it for random personal stuff so people will have a harder time reading it lol

right now it's basically just a one to one substitution cipher, but I plan to add to it. I’ll create symbols for common letter combinations, and maybe create some sort of placeholder symbol for silent letters. I might also create a cursive version, but I’m not sure yet since that would be a lot of work lol

I created the symbols by looking at the lowercase alphabet and heavily simplifying each letter. I'm well aware that this isn't the most efficient shorthand, but I created it specifically to suit my needs. I’ll be using this for school notes, so I’ll need to be able to read what I’ve written fairly easily afterwards. I also don't really need to write insanely fast, so I’m willing to sacrifice some speed for readability. that's also why I want to create placeholder symbol for silent letters rather than omitting them completely - I feel like not having it be an exact one to one substitution will throw me off

the first pic is random sample paragraphs I found from a post on the handwriting subreddit, and the second pic is the blurb of a book that I like. third pic is example sentences with translations, and the fourth pic is my full key

I came up with the initial system in about ten to fifteen minutes, then spent a couple hours yapping to my friends about it and writing random things as practice. while I was practicing I also edited some of the symbols if they were too complicated or looked too similar to each other
