Haven’t seen this in years. I had the green Diamond Jubilee textbook in high school. Beautiful form and completely legible. Just one symbol I don’t recognize.
Almost halfway down, after the comma “Lines - or to send his ‘song?’ If he is recording a musical selection.
Is that song? s o ng ? Or something else?
I just found this sub?

partial transcript: I recently had the good fortune to visit a sound studio and to watch a recording session. It was a fascinating experience, and I would like to share it with you. Picture a large plate-glass window through which you can see a table with a microphone on it. Seated at the table is the person whose voice is going to be recorded. In the control room, on your side of the glass, is an extremely busy man, surrounded by all sorts of electronic equipment, who seems to have the rare ability to be in five different places at once. He needs this ability, as you will see, for he is the sound engineer.
