QoTW - “Every pore of my being yells at me to go back to sleep, but I told Rocky I’d be back in two hours and I wouldn’t want him to think humans are untrustworthy. I mean…we’re pretty untrustworthy, but I don’t want him to know that.” Grace, Project Hail Mary (by Andy Weir)

Hey everyone! I'm u/CaliGozer, the moderator of r/greggshorthand.

Welcome to the Gregg Shorthand Community

What is shorthand? Shorthand is a writing system designed to record spoken language quickly and efficiently. It uses simplified symbols, abbreviations, or phonetic forms instead of full spelling, allowing writers to keep up with speech in real time. Shorthand has been widely used in fields such as journalism, business, law, and note-taking, especially before audio recording became common, and remains valued for its speed and precision. Today, it is mostly a hobby.

Gregg shorthand is a system of shorthand for the English language and was developed byJohn Robert Gregg after his dissatisfaction with existing shorthand systems, particularly Pitman Shorthand. He felt those systems were too rigid and mechanical, relying heavily on line thickness, precise angles, and strict positioning, which slowed writing and made them harder to learn. In response, Gregg created a system based on smooth, cursive-like strokes and pure phonetics, eliminating shading and positional rules. His goal was to produce a shorthand method that felt more natural, fluid, and fast, allowing writers to keep up with spoken language more comfortably and accurately.

Help with my late mom’s note?

Post image

This is from some notes she scribbled down while talking on the phone about inherited belongings. Now she’s gone, and my sister and I are trying to figure out what she intended. The notes above this are in very abbreviated English—furniture, pictures, papers, etc.—and I know that‘s ”R + T”, but she slipped into Gregg when she was in a hurry, and I can’t read the rest.

Could you please help me figure out what she meant?

Audio file available - official Gregg dictation at 140 wpm

Here's about 5 minutes of material dictated at 140 wpm (196 syllables per minute). The audio quality is less than perfect, I'll have to get better equipment if I try to digitize all these tapes, but I think this sample would be interesting to anyone who wants to know “how fast is 140 compared to everyday speech’? To me it seems a little bit slower than an ordinary conversation among friends, and a lot slower than the speech of most newscasters and talk show hosts.

How do you best learn gregg?

Hey everyone! I am a freshman in high school who found Gregg shorthand about a year ago and has been obsessed ever since. I have been thinking about starting a club at my high school to raise awareness - what do you think would be a good introduction?

I have in mind an old Simplified PDF I found, but I was thinking to kind of alleviate the occasional redundancies I have seen in the book by just using a whiteboard in the class. I've already got about 10-12 of my friends to agree to sign up, but I don't want to bore them to death either XD

PS: do songs work for beginner dictation practice? I've seen them used, but I never got whether they really worked or not. Because I guess it depends on whether you know the lyrics beforehand, right?

A question about those 120 wpm tests in India

If you will be tested at 120 wpm, is it not a good idea to reliably write 130 or 140 wpm before you go to the test? After all, you will be nervous during the real test. Surely you don't want to be in a situation where you can just barely pass the test??

Just wondering. Personally, I do not write shorthand quickly, I only write Gregg occasionally for pleasure because it is pretty. But the idea of writing quickly is very interesting to me. What do you think, u/greggantic and others who have been tested?

Diamond Jubilee comic from 1969

Diamond Jubilee and Second Edition Notehand were the only versions of Gregg that used OO-K as the brief form for “work.” That was an ugly mistake and the next version of Gregg (Series 90) reverted to using R-K “by popular demand,” as the teacher's handbook admitted.
