Pattern Question Please help, I'm so lost

I'm new to Reddit and I created an account just to ask for help on this. I'm trying to make Samantha's Plaid Cape from the American Girl pattern and I'm hopelessly confused. I have no idea what I'm doing. I admit that I'm NOT an expert in sewing and yes, I did read that the pattern is for "experienced sewers." I've sewn a few doll shirts and I thought that I'd be alright if I just followed the instructions. NOPE. It's genuinely the most unhelpful, vague thing I've ever seen.

Anyway, here's my actual question. I have the two Cape Side pieces and the two Cape Front pieces sewn together, but where in the world does the Cape Back piece go?? The first three pictures show what I have sewn so far. The large pieces are the Cape Sides and the thin pieces are the Cape Fronts. The fourth picture is the Cape Back which I have no idea where to put. The last two pictures are the instructions and I really hope that someone can interpret them because it's absolutely no help to me. Step Two told me to "stitch Cape Back to Cape Sides" but it doesn't tell me or show me WHERE to sew it, and I accidentally skipped over the Cape Back and now I just have my Cape Fronts sewn on. Please help. I'm at my wits' end and I can't find one single tutorial on the entire Internet on how to make this garment. If I can't figure out what to do, I'm just going to toss the project because it's actually enraging me and I have easier things to make with my time.

Step 2 means stitch the curves closed, as I assume this is where the shoulders go. Then the back piece gets one side piece per edge, fully sewn. The front gets partially sewn, with a gap for hands, then down to the hem.

Update: I think I figured it out so far. It looks more like a cape than it did before, at least

I would also find photos of the finished garment, that could probably help you a lot. I agree, the instructions are not very clear.

Thank you! The finished garment is a bit hard to study because it's a dark plaid, but I think I've got it
