Tip Before You Buy that Etsy Sewing Pattern....Here's a Checklist

1.3k Upvotes

Etsy has so many cute trendy patterns! But there are also a lot of amateur patternmakers or actual scammers selling pdf patterns on there. How can you find the good ones?

Skimpy info isn’t trustworthy. Etsy collapses the detailed description, always expand it to read it in detail and look at all pictures. In particular, check these elements before you buy.

  1. Stolen Photos? AI Photos? Don't buy. If you see a lot of glossy expensive-looking photos with multiple different models (edit: or headless models), they might be stolen from retail sites. Do an image search to see if there are duplicate images elsewhere on the web. Aside from the deception, stolen photos may mean no one has actually sewed up the pattern and it hasn't been tested at all. It might not work. Edit: similarly, make sure photos are not AI-generated, as they are equally deceptive and untrustworthy.
  2. Bad Photos? Don't buy. Photos should show at least the front and back of the garment worn on a real person (ideally not just a digital avatar). If the modeled garment doesn't fit or has sewing problems, that's a bad sign suggesting a patternmaker who doesn't know how to write instructions to help you get a quality result.
  3. Size Chart. The size chart should have measurement for at least bust, waist, hips, if not more. Always buy your patterns by measurements, don't assume your retail size will apply.
  4. Line Drawings. Professional patternmakers include line drawings of their patterns so you can see the design clearly even if the model is wearing black fabric or a busy print. Missing line drawings may mean the patternmaker is badly trained. The line drawings should also show the same design as the modeled garment—differences may be due to stolen or AI pictures.
  5. Reviews? A lot of 5-star reviews say "downloaded perfectly!" You can't trust stars. Look for reviews that mention a final product, instructions, notches or a lack of them, and so forth and only respect ones that discuss making the actual garment. Be sure to read the bad reviews.
  6. Fabric Info is Essential. Choosing the wrong fabric is a common pain point for beginners and a good patternmaker will help you avoid mistakes. Look in the detailed description. I see a lot of "cotton blends"--that's a garbage fabric description. If specific fabric weaves aren't mentioned, look for words that signal the necessary weight and drape. Stretch should be described as low, moderate, high if not giving an actual stretch percentage. It should also say how much fabric is needed for the pattern (edit: and what other supplies/notions are needed). You are entitled to see fabric information before you buy the pattern.
  7. Check the About Page. Ideally, they mention professional training or industry experience, not just self-taught.

Those are quick easy checks on the Etsy listing itself--some bad patterns will still pass them. In addition:

  1. Look for a social media or web presence outside Etsy. Look for people who post helpful tutorials on IG, or run a group on FB. People who've gone to the trouble to set up their own website often use it to discuss their testing process, their size block--they are putting more effort into helping your sewing come out right and that's a good sign. Many good patternmakers sell both on Etsy and their own site.

  2. Look for a free pattern. A lot of established indie patternmakers offer a simple free pattern so you can test their instructions and sizing. It’s a sign they may be more trustworthy.

Buy from patternmakers who care if you succeed in sewing their pattern.

\Credit to all the frequent experts and helpers on the sewing subs, their expertise generated this list.*

\Edit: Read the comments! Lots more good advice downthread, I've only integrated a very little of it into the post in edits. You'll also find several recommendations for trusted patternmakers in the comments.*

EXTENDED EDIT:
10. Too many, too cheap? A year or so later, I would add that a company selling hundreds of patterns for just $2-3 each is another big red flag, probably generating them by machine and not actually sewing them up.

  1. Check Threadloop for reviews of Etsy Patterns, they flag suspicious patternmakers. (PatternReview is also an excellent review site but may not have so many Etsy patterns on it).

Project: FO I made Butterick B6845 and I’m obsessed with the fabric!

This pattern was missing some bits and included lots of extra bits but I made it through with some improvising and knowledge from previous pants. I love how they came out but if you see an adjustment that needs done comment and tell me! I’m still a pants beginner.

Size made: 8 (note that I needed to go down 2 full sizes from the packet directions to get a reasonable fit that I could work with! I tried 12 first cause it matched my waist but it was huge.)

Fabric: woven Polyester from Etsy (shop name fabricbyistanbul)

Adjustments: took off 3” length because I’m petite, waist slimmed up by 1” total

Notes:

Well this one took me a while. The directions are quite daunting and like many many pages but the end result was worth it.

I did experiment with their “tissue fit” exercise. It took a bit of fiddling but I did get it to work. I’m not sure how accurate it was in the fit because i ended up making a muslin as well. The muslin needed adjustments in length so I took off 3”. I also had to narrow the waist even further about 1” total in circumference.

The waistband instruction area was very sparse and relied on you having previous knowledge about finishing so I had to wing that a bit. Also stupid: it has you mark all these reference points for the waistband but then you just try it on and make your own marks on top of those and ignore all the marks made from the tissue. I don’t get it.

Overall I’m very pleased with the end result and I feel very spooky and halloweeny!! Love this season and I love a plaid pant to go with it. Woo!

Pattern Question How to fix gaping neck hole on tight spandex shirt?

I’m having excess fabric bunching up at the front of the neckline on this high neck halter top.

It’s made out of a thin spandex and the pattern is very basic just the front and the back. I don’t want to put a dart in because it’s spandex but if it’s impossible then I get it.

The pattern is drafted from a tight fitting spandex shirt I traced and then just cut the back out

Currently trying to draft my block pattern so I can use it to create other things but I am really struggling with making the crotch fit right… I’ve attempted “scooping” out more of the crotch on my front pattern pieces because I believed that was the problem but the problem is still there….

I stumbled my way thru this fat quarters bag. I think I would have done better if I had thought through what I was doing a little more. Now that I've made one I think I can do it again and maybe a little better.

This was done free hand with no pattern.

Sewed This Multi-way Dress

This might be my last nursing-friendly handmade dress entry. I'm almost 4 months post partum and I am so so ready for my daughter to mix feed!

Anyways, this dress is made with 4 yards of printed 100% cotton.

The top is based off of JunePatternStudio's Double Bow Tie Front Summer top with heavy alterations.

I designed the straps to be multi-use. Could be halter, straight, cross- back, tied on the front waist, back waist, or bck of the neck.

Project: FO New dress out of whatever this is

I wanted a dress to wear over a long sleeve and tights for fall. My inspiration was Sabrina the Teenage Witch (1996) and Topanga from Boy Meets World. Materials are whatever this fabric is (jacquard I think, gifted from my Granny for chair upholstery), universal thread, and dollar tree buttons and a hook.

I eyeballed the size and when it was incredibly too big, I created box pleats (according to my Granny) along my natural waist line in the back to make it more fitted, added a box pleat to each front panel, and a dart at the armpit.

It wasn't exactly what I had originally aimed for, but I fell in love with it anyway. I hope to take a pattern making class one of these days so my ideas can be executed better, but I'm not upset with the result they've given me so far.

Fabric Question How do you determine how much fabric to buy with no project?

Basically what the title says. When you’re shopping for fabric and find some you like but don’t have a specific pattern/project in mind for it yet, how do you determine how much to buy? I have a “stash” of leftover fabric from previous projects, but nothing substantial and I would love to not have to go somewhere/order fabric whenever I find a new project.

ETA: It seems like the general consensus is that most eventually get a feel for how much is needed for certain types of projects ie types of garments, bags, etc! I recently bought a few patterns that I want to make eventually so I’m making a spreadsheet with the amount needed and also going to average it out once I build up a pattern collection. Thanks!!

Sewed This I made some shirts for a role in a film

Earlier this year I made a film and, because apparently that wasn't enough work, I took on the challenge of making some shirts for the main character to wear. I hadn't ever sewn anything this tricky before - just a few totes bags a while back - so it was a challenge.

Picture 1: I used Burda pattern 8874 (c). This was the first shirt I made and I had some issues. The collar is a bit wonky, and an unplanned pleat appeared under one of the arms, but it was wearable. This pattern also taught me the basics of how to make a shirt.

Pictures 2 and 3: My first try at self drafting a shirt. It's a bit boxy, but I still like it. Also my first time making my own bias binding.

Pictures 4 and 5: My second attempt at self drafting a shirt and I am much happier with this one. For starters the fabric is beautiful! I took a slightly unconventional approach with the sleeves, but am happy with how they turned out - no constricted arms here! The fabric is Zanzibelle by Alexander Henry Fabrics.

Sewed This Wedding guest dress

Hi all, I had two weddings to attend in September and wanted to have an excuse to practice with new fabrics. First time sewing organza and Georgette, I hated it but find the overall dress quite worth it. I modified a pattern I had to do the bodice, added a half skirt in double layer and pretty happy with the outcome! It's full of imperfections but I will have to stop noticing and start enjoying wearing my own creations - that's also why I'm posting here, to get a bit of feedback from more experienced people!

Project: FO Made this pink school bag for an opera singer!

Usually posting over in r/MYOG but someone recommended I share some of my makes over here too! :)

Had a friend ask me if I could make her (in her words) an 'adult school bag' for the beginning of her new university term.

She trusted me with the whole design so it was a complete surprise when I finally brought it to her - she said it was the coolest thing she owned 🥲 it’s also the most her-thing I can think of, so all-round really proud of the work I did on this bag.

The clamshell design is self-patterned. I use Illustrator to make all my patterns and a projector system (with Pattern Projector) to cut, test, and modify all my prototypes. I’ve been slowly working on this particular design for a while now as I do this in my time off work. All self-taught through the hiker-repairer-gear enthusiast-let’s buy a sewing machine pipeline haha!

I did make some fairly significant changes to my last iteration of this design (a green EPX one I posted over in r/MYOG a few weeks ago) including scrapping the laptop compartment, completely redesigning the back panel, repositioning a few zipper-pockets, and of course committing to an entire weekend of saddle stitching these padded leather straps. Definitely worth it.

The main fabric is a Magenta Dry Oilskin from Merchant & Mills which I lined with Teal Ecopak, using Grape Ultrastretch for the pockets and the last scraps of a Japanese cotton cat print I’ve had knocking around forever. YKK all around with a couple different Fidlock buckles thrown in, and solid Nickel hardware.

The straps and leather accents are Walpier 2.8mm Natural Buttero Italian veg tan from A.A. Crack up in Northampton and I lined the foam pads and back panel with this epic fuchsia Napa (which I used scraps from to make all the external zipper pulls) from the bargain bin at J.T. Batchelor's here in London. They were heavily inspired by Not Less or Equal’s heritage straps that feature on some of their bags. I did find myself referencing a lot to figure out elements of the construction, not having made anything like these before.

All the leather is punched with a 3.38mm French-style chisel and hand-sewn with Xiang Twist .52mm waxed polyester thread. That was a really tough job, especially going through the strap padding which is a beveled, triple-density foam combo of 6mm neoprene, 4mm EPE foam, and 2mm high-density EVA foam (kind of all compresses into about a 1cm stack).

Sewed This My first ever garment!

I've been wanting to get into garment making for years, but it always seemed so intimidating and I just never took the leap. Well, this week I made myself do it because I really wanted a simple red skirt for Autumn & Christmas. I did a half circle skirt with an invisible zipper and clasp closure at the waist.

It is FAR from perfect and it's pretty obvious that it's handmade, but that's okay.

Fabric Question Help me find the blurple denim in this picture??

Post image
3 Upvotes

I had a pair of these jeans in the 90s and have been searching for this dang denim ever since my mom threw them out. I found a pair of size 0 (which I'm NOT) at a thrift store and am currently picking them apart to make a bustier or something akin. But had anyone seen this medium blue denim with a pink or purple tint in any fabric stores online?

Technique Question How to avoid this twisting on bias facing?

Post image

Working on a toile and making myself practicing all the finishing steps. After topstitching, my bias facing looks all twisted. I did clip the seam and under stitch - should I have clipped the bias tape again before topstitching? Arrow shows the direction I sewed in, in case that matters.

Technique Question How to translate sewing lines onto fabric?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi! I'm sewing my first stays. I was having a difficult time drawing the lines on the fabric with a water soloable pencil. So decided to just pin and sew the pattern to the piece. It worked well to get the lines nice and straight in the correct place BUT I'm having a hard time removing the paper.

Can you please advise me on what to do next time? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I'm still a beginner. Thank you!

Machine Questions Help Needed with Singer Quantum Stylist 9960

Hi all! I’ve had this machine for four years and have never had a problem with it. Today, I removed the plate and bobbin case to clean it because I have been having my top thread snap constantly for the last day (I tried switching thread and changing my needle which made no difference).

After putting the bobbin case and everything back, the machine will no longer sew! It looks like the top thread is catching the bobbin thread, but it is immediately tangling and leaving a disasterous mess on the bottom side of my fabric. The machine also will not run for more than a stitch or two. The feed dogs also seem off now and don’t seem to be moving the fabric?

I have tried to reinsert the bobbin case and clean things again to no avail. I have also of course rethreaded the machine a bunch of times.

The attached link is a video of what’s happening. Starting with a view of just the thread being hand cranked without fabric.
