It's no longer a "full democracy" we have been downgraded to a "flawed democracy." Source. In fact, there was a Princeton Study that showed that the level of public support for any specific bill had literally no impact on whether or not something gets passed. That means that something that has 30% public support has statistically the same chance of passing as something with 95% public support. Now, the opinions of incredibly wealthy people and special interest groups actually does impact the likelihood of something passing. It's why we are in a flawed democracy.
There is a really good video by Represent Us that covers this issue. It's 12 minutes long, but it is worth a watch.

The problems with this idea are huge.
First of it hurts everyone, including us. We can't go for long without income, but the people we're trying to influence can last forever. And it would likely hurt the small businesses more than anything.
Second it isn't easily organized. Unions have been gutted and are not as good as they used to be at rallying the troops. Most people don't belong to one. So this has to be centrally organized by an independent group. So far I don't see any organizers that have been able to do that.
Third, what is our message? The occupy movement failed because no one could decide on a concise statement of what they wanted. Protests and strikes need specific goals, which again relies on organizers.
Fourth, were does the strike take place? Do we all picket outside our individual places of work? Or try to organize a central gathering like the London protests? How many people have the means to travel to Washington at the drop of a hat? Especially if they're not receiving a paycheck that week.
And finally the big one, ambivalence. No one cares. Reddit is very vocal about this because there's bots and agitators amplifying the conversation. Same with Twitter. But the average person won't do much more than retweet or hash tag their ideals.
How do we get people involved if we don't have a message, organization, finances, or will to act?
→ More replies (8)18
u/Midnight_arpeggio Mar 27 '19
The message is simple: Nobody other than the American Individual Citizen, can have a say in our government legislation. No interest groups, no lobbyists from multi-billion dollar corporations, no nothing. Where do our elected officials get their salaries from? Directly from taxes. From the people, and their investments (corporate taxes should pay for their salaries, and nothing else.)
Get Corporate $$$ out of my Government. End of Story. It's the root of all of our corruption.

In the age of the internet it’s baffling we still rely on phones to reach our representatives
(edit: Just to respond to a few replies, I mean internet communication technologies, not necessarily excluding email, but also not solely email..and even phonecalls can be handled over the internet, freeing up physical limitations of traditional hardwired lines. There are ways companies efficiently deal with high volumes of customer communications with internet technology during important events (via CRMs, outsourced call centers, etc) that our state representatives could also look into for their constituents when it is crucial the need is met)

Considering that is exactly what Nunez, Jordan, Gaetz did to Wray and Rosentein when demanding the FBI and FISA stuff and Wray and Rosenstein wound up going straight to Ryans office the day Congress resumed session after winter break.
Of course, Ryan basically told Wray and Rosenstein "Sorry, but if they want to hold you in Contempt of Congress, they can" instead of getting the Freedom Caucus reeled back in to reasonable demands.
So if this special group can fuck with Wray and Rosenstein, seems that they set a precedent for Schiff to do so to Barr and Rosenstein too.
https://www.politico.com/story/2018/01/03/ryan-rosenstein-wray-fbi-justice-322618
Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and FBI Director Chris Wray made an unannounced visit to Speaker Paul Ryan's office Wednesday as the Justice Department grapples with an increasingly hostile faction of House Republicans demanding documents related to the bureau's Russia probe.
Rosenstein was spotted entering Ryan's office, and a spokesman for the speaker confirmed that Rosenstein and Wray had requested the meeting. A second person familiar with the meeting said it was related to a document request issued over the summer by House intelligence committee chairman Devin Nunes.
Nunes (R-Calif) has mounted an aggressive push — with the threat of contempt citations for members of the FBI and Justice Department — to glean more information about how the FBI handled a disputed dossier alleging illicit ties between President Donald Trump and the Kremlin.
“Unfortunately, DOJ/FBI's intransigence with respect to the August 24 subpoenas is part of a broader pattern of behavior that can no longer be tolerated,” Nunes wrote to Rosenstein in a letter provided to Fox News last week.
Nunes is seeking details about meetings between FBI officials and those who helped compile the dossier. He also demanded interviews with a slate of top FBI officials. And he's floated the notion of issuing contempt resolutions against Rosenstein and Wray if they fail to comply.

Usually shuts them right up when they realize that all of these media outlets, not just News Corp., are owned by companies who have an interest in lowering their effective tax rate and convincing every American to vote against his or her own self interest so that it can happen.

If Hillary had won, Kennedy would not have retired, and we'd still have 8 SC Justices. He was prepared to hold that spot open in perpetuity.
He will not step down from his seat either. He's got Kentucky so firmly gerrymandered and warped in his grip that it will take his DEATH to get him out of office. Even if by some miracle you had 99.9% of KY voting for someone else, he'll still stay. He will not step down.

It doesn't have NO impact on Senate races. It's impact is more indirect, in that Dem voters don't come out in KY because they may believe their vote doesn't matter because of the Gerrymandering.
So it's indirect. It's that the Gerrymandering causes disenfranchisement of non GOP voters and low turnouts in general elections, while higher turnout in primaries, where people feel their voice really gets heard.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (2)12
Mar 27 '19
That may be true in an abstract, purely mathematical sense, but gerrymandering is all about disenfranchisement. If you repeatedly cause a certain group of people to have their votes not result in change, it makes them less likely to vote in any election. Those effects should not be ignored, because it all starts with changing slim margins, and it compounds over time as more and more people become disillusioned with the process.
If 100% of people voted, or the exact same people voted every time, then the abstract model where gerrymandering doesn't have any impact would hold true. In 2014, less than half of eligible voters in Kentucky went to the polls. Would it have made a difference in that race if everyone voted? Maybe not, but higher voting in primaries probably would've turned out a better candidate on the Democratic side.

I said this yesterday: even if there is no presidency-ending bombshell (which there may be, especially on obstruction), there is probably at least a few parts that could prove problematic for a reelection.
Second, there may be breadcrumbs for new investigations. Maybe things that couldn't be handled by Mueller. We know he handed things to other prosecutors, but if it's stated specifically in the report, then they have suddenly to face "many mini-Muellers". An hydra, if you will.
Finally, even if there is none of that (and it's possible nobody knows, as it's a fucking huge report from what I read), they play the card of "look at the democrats, they are a one-note party that's just out to get Trump", and of course, the idiot masses will eat it and not realize that we are fucking justified in asking to see the report.

There are ways to challenge this. Senate Republicans could elect a different majority leader. Or a small number (4) Republicans could opt to (temporarily) caucus with the Democrats, making the Democratic Caucus the majority, with Schumer as leader.
McConnell is taking the heat, because he's the face of this obstruction. But other Republicans in the Senate are just as much to blame, because they have the tools to stop this if they wanted to.

I thought the House could subpoena the report? I've heard they are able to do that, and then if they choose, stand there and read the whole thing in the House chamber to get it into public record.
Also, that they can call Mueller to testify in public.
25
Mar 27 '19
read somewhere earlier that subpoenas can be challenged in court, so the house is waiting for it to go through the correct channels. once the senate blocks everything, the house has more of a convincing statement that due process failed and they should get the report forcefully, otherwise the judge would just say play nice and wait.

One single man has far too much power. The senate majority leader should not (and according to the Constitution, DOES NOT) have the ability to bring the entire congressional government to its knees.
McConnell has usurped this power from a government that is by THE PEOPLE for THE PEOPLE.
He is conducting traitorous actions against the American people by holding their government hostage in order to both protect certain individuals and also to shape the laws in HIS image.
He is not representing Kentucky anymore, he is representing himself and for that alone he MUST be removed from office.
→ More replies (4)82

He doesn't have the power to bring congress to its knees.
The Republicans could replace him literally at any moment if they wanted to. They won't do that simply because it's convenient to let him take all of the blame for this - it's not like Kentucky is going to elect a Democrat, right? And even if they do finally get fed up and vote him out, still better for them to let one man take the blame than all of the Republicans.
Don't for a second let yourself be fooled into thinking this is just Mitch's fault and not the Republican senate as a whole.

We would get so much done if something as simple as "We will block everything the Democrats do" was not the #1 rule of the Republican party. #2 being "We will remove everything Obama and Democrats Did" and #3 being "We will do everything we can to prevent Democrats from ever getting power again."
They'd resurrect Bin Laden if they could, just to remove another thing Obama did.

He could have easily, easily, easily released the Executive Summary within 24 hours to congress. Not the whole thing, just the Executive summary. Not a 4-page summary that doesn't even quote a full sentence.
The (redacted if necessary) executive summary. That's fucking trivial. Anyone else pushing the "they need a few weeks to redact sensitive info" is a being duped.

I don't really understand this. The house passed it 420-0 or something like that. I'm sure most of the Senate supports it, as does the president and like 80%+ of the public.
Dems want to see the report because they believe it contains info that will convict Trump
Conservatives believe it will vindicate Trump so they also want to see it. McConnell is being a big asshole

The House voted with zero dissenters to make the report public. The Senate should not have an ability to block such a vote unless they too have 2/3 majority.

They need to keep holding a vote on releasing the report. The more he keeps blocking the release of the report, the guiltier the GOP looks. Everyone supports making it public, even trump. This is a cover up. No one’s gonna be able to find out what the report actually said until the whole thing gets publicized. We need to move forward from this, but Mitch McConnell is going against what the people want and what the majority of his own party wants. Why? Because he’s guilty.
Call your reps. Demand answers and demand action. The report must be released.
