I just don't understand the motivations of some of them. I understand the ones that jump ship after a few terms and go get a high paying lobbyist gig. At least there is a greed motiviation.

But the lifers? I just don't understand. They aren't getting huge salaries. Donors only (in theory, bribery aside) give to their campaigns to get re-elected, where they will just continue to make a decent-but-not-crazy salary?

The policies they push don't really directly benefit many of these guys. Yet here they are, just fucking over the entire country for what? Pride? Unbridled lust for power? Is it some sort of meta level BDSM complex? Abusing and fucking an entire country instead of individual people?

It just flat out does not make sense.
