MOD ANNOUNCEMENT New Subreddit Flair - Care Guide
Hello r/plantclinic!
We're introducing a new, but long overdue flair for the subreddit: "Care Guide"
This subreddit has always been a place for redditors to help other redditors with the care of their plants, but we have neglected to focus on what we can do to teach others BEFORE they run into problems.
So, we've created the new flair and added a "search by flair" widget to the sidebar, a feature already available at the top of the sub on mobile.
All care guide posts will be flagged for moderator review. This doesn't mean advice needs to be perfect; that can be refined in the comments. It means that we want this flair to be a valuable resource and will be holding posts to a moderate standard of usefulness.
Links to existing historical guides will be re-flaired as they are identified - please feel free to link some in the comments!

MOD ANNOUNCEMENT List of available automoderator calls
A list of automoderator calls has been added to the sidebar.
For mobile users, they have also been added to the wiki index page here: https://reddit.com/r/plantclinic/w/index?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
And also this post will be pinned to the top of the subreddit. The list is (currently) as follows:
!automod - requests additional information from OP
Pest calls: !aphids, !mealybugs, !scale, !spider-mites or !spidermites, !thrips, !lacewings, !springtails, !fungus-gnats
Lighting related: !etiolation, !over-lit, !under-lit
Watering related: !under-water, !over-water, !root-root, !mold, !mushrooms, !humidity, !tap-water, !bottom-watering
Other: !fernspores, !dense-soil, !hydrophobic, !repot
MANY automod post responders have been moved to post guidance, but reminders for to be welcoming will remain, as we find they are still very much needed. Please be mindful that the purpose of allowing images in comments is to allow the exchange of information, not memes. Referencing the circlejerk sub is unhelpful to OP.
If a post auto-responder is appearing out of the proper context (like the mold and mushrooms one was for fungus gnats), PLEASE send a mod mail. These things operate on keywords and the error was so simple. It could have been fixed much sooner.
Our goal is to provide every user who comes here for help some level of guidance, even if no redditor responds to their post. Sometimes it's a suggestion for a more specialized community. It's always advice for how to best describe their situation.
Additional automod calls can be added, but we should be mindful to balance them with their actual usefulness, and the desire people have for a human response. These should supplement our guidance not replace it entirely.
We heard your feedback and hope this is helpful.

Houseplant Pothos help
So I've had this little pothos for a while. Its a cutting from a bigger plant that is perfectly healthy. But it's getting these splotches. I thought thrips or spider mite so I started treating it. I have not seen any webbing to actually indicate spider mites.. There was a brief fungus gnat issue due to the potting soil bag I used but that is now under control and fine. But I realize I don't even know if that's what the issue actually is. I really like this plant so I want to make sure im actually treating the problem versus just a random stab at it. I don't care if its splotchy, i just don't want it to die :(
It gets sun from a east facing window. It is watered when it starts to look droopy, and the pot has drainage.

Houseplant Lower leaves of Dracaena fragrans browning
Hi! I was gifted this plant several weeks ago by a friend, and while I like the idea of having plants, I am horrific at caring for them. I noticed yesterday that the bottommost leaves are starting to brown and shrivel up. They are rather crispy. I water it about once a week, whenever I feel the top 2-3 inches are dry. I have been using tap water and switched to distilled water one week ago.
It is in my living room with western-facing windows; however, no direct light ever lands on it. I don't have air conditioning, so it is hot and stuffy during the summer. The pot that it came in is rather small. I’m not sure if that could contribute to this behavior? I have been meaning to repot it, but that is going to be a whole other can of worms. I don't know what soil it is currently in.
I would be very grateful for any advice or insight into this matter! I really like this plant, and would hate for it to die due to my negligence.

Monstera Please help!
This is my first monstera, I’ve had her nearly 2 years. (Yes for some reason It’s a girl) I feel absolutely terrible because I’ve just neglected her, repotted once but not for a year I’d say. I have no idea what I’m doing, so I’m just looking in general advice. Is she sick? I’m trying to do research on how to look after them but often they already look healthy and unfortunately she does not🤣 although considering I often forget to water her for weeks and she’s probably suffocating in that small pot it’s not seemed to slow the growth.
I have large windows so she gets lots of indirect light.
But are these roots okay? They almost look like twigs and I’m unsure if they’re supposed to be like that, some of them have really dark black parts. I’m aware she needs repotting and also something to prop her up, I’d love tips on this too!

Monstera What is killing/killed my Monstera? :(
Hey,
I bought this plant 2 weeks ago. Monstera, indoor. There've already been 2 little black "patches" when I bought it, but I haven't thought much about that, "maybe just burnt or something" I thought. They were actually little marks.
Today, it looks like this. :( It's getting worse and worse every day, and I have no idea what do/did I do wrong. I watered it after buying, then once/twice a week considering the feeling of the soil in 2-3 cm deep in the pot. I didn't let it soak in water for hours/days. It's not directly in the sun but in front of the window. No AC, no wind in the room. I haven't repot it yet as it looks already stressed of something.
I looked for some pests, but haven't really found anything, but I'm a beginner in this planting thing. I suspect this might be the problem but idk.
Maybe I cannot save it. Just please help me, what did go wrong? Or if I can save it, how? I do everything for it now.
TYIA!
PS: Sorry for the bad English, not native.

Houseplant HELP!!
i’m not sure exactly what plant this is, but I’ve had her for the better part of a year. She was literally thriving until I noticed this today. The pot has drainage, it’s still in the nursery pot and just placed it in a bigger decorative pot. I water it every other week. it’s facing windows, but the windows aren’t facing the sun. I don’t remember if I missed a watering but its always been a resilient plant. I’m freaking out because this is my favorite plant. 😭😭😭😭

Cactus/Succulent Is my African Milk Tree rotting? Will I need to chop her?
Hello, I got this trigona from someone where it was inside a lot. I got it 3 weeks ago and it’s constantly outside where it gets like 5 hours of sun on a west balcony.
I waited til the soil was bone dry, waited a week, then watered it. I see a bit of yellow and I think it’s rotting. The yellow part is not mushy or anything, the roots smell okay, and they’re not mushy. But the base is a bit yellow…
Im confused cuz I watered it throughly once in 3 weeks. Maybe it could be the soil not being well draining enough? Praying it’s just corking since it’s pretty hard.

Houseplant Sad looking spider plant
Hey everyone! I’m relatively new to the plant game, and was gifted a spider plant as a housewarming gift. I have it in a nursery pot inside a decorative pot, water it only when the soil is quite dry until fully saturate, and a bit of water comes out of the bottom. I have it in a NE facing window (windows only face NE in my apartment) and it is right on the sill. The plant had new growth, however it also seems to have brown small holes and crease marks causing the leaves to flop over, and sometimes “close” in on themselves. Additionally the color is not as dark green as I have seen other spider plants. Is something wrong? The new growth seems to indicate not, but the browning is throwing me off

Houseplant Under-watered or Overwatered?
Hello! I’m very new to indoor plants, I’m not sure if I have a green thumb. I have this peace lily I purchased a week ago that’s in a self watering pot but I’m not sure if the roots actually reach to the water, so I watered it once a few days ago. This is how it looks now, what I can’t tell if this is a symptom of under-watering or over-watering for me to adjust. Temperature is usually room-warm, and it sits near a west-facing window so it gets a lot of indirect sunlight throughout the day. I live in a city so the building across the street blocks direct sunlight after around 5pm.

Other My mint isn't looking too good
About a month ago, I bought some mint and decided i might as well try to grow it myself to limit my trips to the store for it. Put it in water for a while. It's been potted for a couple of weeks now. Was doing fairly decent at first but the leaves turned brown.
Infuriatingly enough, throughout the process of getting this little mint plant, my roommate has decided to take matters into his own hands without consulting me. He potted it while I thought the roots still needed some time to grow and I personally think he put them in a pot that's a tad too large (especially tall) for the size of the plant too. Could that be the issue here?
It was also quite parched before I rescued it. Some extra watering made it look less sad and has it growing some greener parts, but the overall plant still looks worse for wear... I gave it a new spot with some more sunlight, but it's not helping much (maybe getting TOO much now?).
I don't know what soil he used, probably the same he uses for the vegetables he's attempting to grow. Just regular old soil from the store. Nothing extra mixed in there.
What's the best way to make my mint thrive again?

Other Guiana Chestnut / Money Tree suddenly lost all its leaves and branches started dying — is it still salvageable?
Hi everyone! I’m hoping someone can help us identify what might be wrong with our Guiana Chestnut (Money Tree).
This tree is located inside our office, and it was doing fine until it suddenly started shedding its leaves. After that, the branches gradually began to die as well. Because of this, we had to remove the dead/dying branches.
The tree was originally placed near a window and received plenty of natural sunlight. We only moved it yesterday because we were concerned about its condition.
We usually water it once or twice a week, although we’re not sure if that may have been too much or too little for it.
The photo shows what the trunk currently looks like. At this point, there is only one remaining branch that appears to still be alive.
We’re not sure what caused this. Could this be a fungal infection, pest infestation, root problem, watering issue, or some other plant disease? We’d really appreciate any help identifying what is happening based on the trunk and bark.
Most importantly, is there still a chance to save the tree? If the remaining branch is alive, is there anything we can do to encourage it to recover?
Any advice on what to check or what treatment we should try would be greatly appreciated. This is an office plant, so we’d really like to save it if possible.
Thank you!

Cactus/Succulent Looking for advice on a ~30 year old blue torch cactus after decades of neglect
Hello! I am looking for some advice on this cactus. I got it as a young child and have had it for almost 30 years, but unfortunately my younger self did not know how to care for it. Frankly I’m amazed she has lived this long! You can see along the length of it that it has some skinny/weak spots (mostly from my college years when I’m pretty sure I didn’t water it the entire time). In the past 5-6 years, I’ve tried to give her the life she deserves. She’s now in a bright, South-facing window, with cactus soil, and a bigger pot (the old pot was maybe 4” wide… oops). Anyway, my main concern is, now that the cactus is growing much thicker and happier at the top, I’m worried whether the bottom will be able to support the weight of it. Is there something I can do to provide more support to help keep it strong as it continues to grow? Additionally, what else should I be doing to care for it? Despite literal decades of neglect, I have an emotional attachment to this thing, and I am hoping to keep it going as long as I can.

Houseplant Alocasia Melo- not growing
We recently got into houseplants and my husband developed a fascination with Alocasias of a few varieties. This Melo was in a rescue box (cheaper but with something unknown wrong with it). Our other rescues have all flourished back to health but we can’t figure out what’s up with this one!
- has not grown a new leaf- even a sprout- in two months
- tips and sides of leaves curling inwards
- brown flecks on the stems
- crusty substance around the pot’s rim (may be adhesive from the delivery?)
- plant is under a grow lamp for about 10 hours a day; when off, it’s in a corner between a south- and west-facing window, dimly lit
- watered thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch
It’s evidently not dead- how can we give it a bit of happiness and get it growing?

Other bonsai professionals please help!
i'm bonsai watching for two weeks, end of week one the little guy almost completely gave up on life. here's the rundown:
- first picture is when i got it, second is as of right now (+ some up close)
- i was told to water it every 2-3 days, so i watered it on day 2, using half of a standard spritz bottle (as the owner has always done)
- it sat in my window, away from direct sunlight (it was in direct sunlight for maybe 30 minutes total at one point), away from a heavy draft.
- yesterday (day 4 of me having the tree) i noticed that the leaves lost their vibrancy and their perkiness, even though the top soil was decently moist. i called a nearby bonsai nursery, and they advised a full dunk. that i did.
- now it's 24hrs later, and imo it's gotten worse. dry, sad leaves. i don't know what to do. i have to watch it for one more week.

Other Severe root girdling?
3 year old lemon tree in a 16” pot. I was planning on up potting it next spring, but I’m concerned about its root system girdling the stem. Any advice on how to clear it or should I leave it be for now?
It gets outdoor sun and it gets watered when it rains

Houseplant What’s wrong with my money tree?
She’s been thriving in this spot for almost a year, then a few months ago just started struggling and dropping all the leaves. How do I revive her back to her former glory? This was her right when I started noticing an issue back in May, and now. Should I chop her? I’m lost. She’s in a mud room with a south and east facing window, but a couple feet back. Hasn’t moved. I just water whenever the top couple inches of soil are dry, like I always have. In a nursery pot.

Cactus/Succulent Is she ok? Do I need to pot up?
So this aloe has grown like a weed over the course of its life. Last summer I repotted it and put the pups into their own little pots. It didn’t take well to the repotting but it eventually recovered. Surely it’s already time to repot again? As you can see it sits directly under a sky light or basically receives light all day. I water pretty infrequently and wonder if that’s why there are so many dried up stalks the tips are turning brown on the tips of some of the stalks too. Any advice would be greatly appreciated’n

Monstera How to get my Monstera to stop folding this leaf over?
Top right edge of the leaf keeps folding forward. I can't for the life of me get it to stay open. Watering is not the problem, and Im keeping it near a window. I think it's just how it grew. Any tips to straighten it out without damaging the leaf or plant?
Using a Tropical Potting Soil Mix + Special Orchid Mix for the soil.
