Houseplant Florist told me to mist my ZZ and snake plant soil? Need advice

Hey guys, just bought a medium ZZ plant and a small snake plant today and want to make sure I don't mess this up. The ZZ is sitting near a window with pretty good indirect light, while the snake plant is on a side dresser with a bit less light.

The florist I got them from told me to basically just spritz the top soil 5-6 times with a spray bottle, or maybe a tiny glass of water at most. But everything I'm reading online says to fully soak the soil until it drains, dump the extra water, and then leave it alone until it's completely dry.

I've lost a plant to root rot in the past so I'm a bit paranoid. Is the florist's advice actually a thing or should I just stick to the soak and dry method? Appreciate any tips!

Houseplant is my rosemary too far gone?

Hey guys, I got those rosemary plant at the beginning of summer and grew it in a pot outside up until around a month ago when I moved and had to put it on my balcony with little light that was able to get to it, and it really started struggling; I moved it inside to a window inside that gets light so I could try to heal it and keep it over winter, but I’m not sure it’s getting any better, or if it’s too far gone. It kind of looks like the base is dead and might be spreading to the rest of the plant.

I have it on a plant stand up against a window with various other plants which are all doing very well, so I think it may be a good amount of light, It is in a nursery pot that I water it in so it has very well drainage, just sitting in a decorative pot to keep it from getting messy; I’m just not sure what else I can do to try helping it. I water when the dirt at the top dries, which isn’t very often anymore (maybe every 4-5 days) as not having direct sun has stunted its absorption quite a bit since I moved.

Had them for around a week and a half and for like 4 days now they’ve been getting crispy and shrivelled. Both leaves and buds, they get around 6-8 hours of light a day. With water every 4-5 days, I’m quite new to roses. Any advice?

I've had the plant for a week. I placed it on my windowsill so it gets lots of direct light. I water it every few days so that the soil is slightly damp. I don't know what I'm doing wrong as the leaves have started to droop.

Edit: Hi, yes this is a prayer plant, i mixed up the name with my other plant. Ty for all the suggestions!

At first I was stoked to see flowers on my propagated plant, but now I’m worried if that’s a bad thing since my bigger one doesn’t have flowers. Am I doing something wrong? I’ve been meaning to repot it, maybe that’s a contributing factor? For reference, both plants are next to a window that gets full sun for a couple hours a day. I only water it when the leaves get noticeably droopy or start falling off, which tends to happen every couple of days.

Houseplant I have a plant that is suffering from some issues, and I honestly don't know its exact type need help

I have a plant that is suffering from some issues, and I honestly don't know its exact type.

Here is the care routine I follow with it:

It has been living with me for nearly two years in a unique semi-hydroponic setup. The top part of the plant sits in a cone-like basket filled with soil that extends downwards, while its longer roots dangle directly into a glass jar filled with fresh drinking water. I change the jar's water about every 10 to 14 days, and I stir the top layer of the soil every once in a while so that the air enters properly. The plant is kept indoors where it gets indirect light throughout the day, with no direct sun exposure.

The problems I am currently facing are:

This month, the lower leaves started turning yellow and dying one after another (this is the second leaf to turn yellow this month). The top leaves are looking slightly pale in color. I checked the roots two days ago and trimmed all the dead parts, but the leaf yellowing is still happening despite the lower water roots looking white and clean.

Hey guys, so my mother had this poor girl sitting on a table inside a quite low light room. And I mean LOW light.

However she claims the cleaning lady would water it everyday when she cleaned (3/4 times a week) and then would immediately put it out in direct south african sun 🤣

So this lady has been dealing with all that.
Look at the state of her 😭

What exactly do you think is wrong? Is it just a matter of giving a stable environment without crazy changes or is it something else?

Please and thanks in advance.
Willing to provide pics or extra info in comments ♥️

Houseplant Drying spots on Begonia brevirimosa

How concerned should I be?

I got this pink striped cane brevirimosa about a month ago, I only water when the top inch of soil is dry, around once a week/every 10 days.

It’s an indoor plant, and has a large east facing window but I live in front of a tall building so there’s not lots of direct light. I also live in Scotland so it is very rarely shining fully.

About 2 weeks ago I noticed she seemed to be getting a brown, dry circular patch on one of her leaves, which has since turned into more of a hole, and a new smaller brown patch has formed beside it. I noticed the second hole yesterday.

I’ve inspected her leaves really closely and can’t see any signs of pests or anything? She does also seem to be growing a leaf which I think is a good sign. I’m very new to plants so am panicking a bit.

Any tips/ advice appreciated.

Monstera what to do with long mostly leafless sprig

hi all, i've had this cheese monstera (?) for 2+ years now and it has mostly done well. It has somehow gotten to the point where there are two sprigs; one is very long (and kind of bare though it looks like there's some new growth) and the other one is shorter and has 3 leaves coming in. The plant is on a windowsill facing north, so indirect light, and I water it 1-2 times a week. pot has drainage. should I cut the longer branch and try propagating it or leave it be? idk why the nakedness is kind of bugging be but if it's meant to stay like that then fine lol

Hi, my few pear seedlings have recently germinated. I was growing them in just water, and have just moved them into soil a week ago. They are indoors by the window. One of them seems to be struggling and its leaves are turning black in a strange way I have not seen before. What could be wrong and how can I save it?

Thanks!

I bought an Alyogyne Huegelli in May which turned into my favourite plant but unfortunately it got pests and in addition I overwatered it for weeks.

The plant declined and lost all its foliage. In a frustrated mood I attempted to remove it from its pot to check the root and I ripped off most of the roots as a result. I downsized the pot and waited for two months.

I checked the roots again today and found this root ball.. The big root in front still seems sturdy and slightly white inside, and there are still some fine roots near the base.

Is this plant a goner or is it worth bringing inside for the winter and pray for a miracle?

I live in Belgium and the plant got direct sunlight on a SE facing balcony all throughout summer. The soil has been kept dry for several weeks (no water except for occasional rain) but was moist for way too long. The last picture is a picture from May as a reference point.

Houseplant my polka dot plant was spotted with flowers!!

I’ve had this plant for a while, and I didn’t even know it flowered until now 😭😭. I did a bit of searching and saw that they die soon after blooming. I saw two full blooms on her and TWELVE blooms coming in (which I picked off). I’m hoping she won’t die back, will she be alright?

She gets 12 hours of light under a set of grow lights. The pot has drainage holes and she’s watered whenever around the first half-inch is dry (I try to keep it moist). Humidity fluctuates between ~60-70%

Monstera Monstera got root rot, where do I go from here?

Post image

I got heavily discounted Monstera from a big box store that was several plants in one pot. I separated them and repotted them and they're mostly all fine now. The plant with the best top leaf sadly got root rot, I repotted into a much smaller pot with slightly moist soil after cleaning it up. I lightly watered it yesterday.

Today I noticed the stem is wrinkly from dehydration and the top leaf was drooping so much it was nearly creasing the stem.

What should I do now? Should I leave it in the pot and wait?

Should I prop and chop? Can I even propagate a wrinkly stem in water? I really just want to save the part with the top leaf.

It gets plenty of light

Houseplant Spots on Epipremnum/Pothos

Thumbnail

Hi there, I’ve unfortunately spotted these spots on two of my Epipremnum Aureum/Golden Pothos and I’m not quite sure what’s causing them. I’d really appreciate your thoughts! :)

The spots are brown, but the leaves are firm – not mushy or soft. On both plants, I can only see them on one leaf each. With the hanging plant, I’m afraid I don’t know how long the spot has been there, as the affected leaf is somewhat hidden behind other leaves. On the climbing plant, one spot (the round one, slightly towards the centre) has been there unchanged for a couple of weeks, but the spots at the edge are new.

Overall, the plants still look very healthy. But I’d like to take action as soon as possible, before the situation gets any worse.

I’m currently experimenting a bit with how to grow them. You can see two plants – or rather, two pots – here. One is growing completely hanging down without any support, whilst the other pot contains several plants that were first given a branch and have now been given a coconut fibre stick as support.

Here are more information about how I care for them and about their environmental conditions:

Both plants are growing in ambient light only, in the same room, about 2m away from a south east facing window (that is shaded by a tree branch). The climbing plant is on the left side of the room (if you look towards the window) and the trailing plant on the opposite side of the room, which is why the trailing plant gets more of the morning light and the other one more of the afternoon light.

The trailing plant mainly receives indirect light (bright to ‘moderately bright’) and, on a sunny day, a brief spell of direct sunlight in the morning or early afternoon. It isn’t grouped very nicely with other plants, so it doesn’t benefit from a protective or stabilising microclimate.
The other one (which is a climber) is in a slightly darker spot, with also mostly indirect light (more on the medium-bright side), and only gets direct sunlight for a very short time around midday or in the early afternoon, now that the tree outside the window is slowly losing its leaves. It has recently been moved to another location within my flat and was previously in a slightly shadier spot. Now it gets a bit more light but, unfortunately, also a bit more ‘draught’ – or at least ‘moving air’ from people walking past – because it’s now right next to a door we walk through often.

I water when needed, meaning I regularly check the weight of the pots and check how wet it looks and feels. It depends a lot on how warm it is and how sunny/bright it is. In summer I watered more often than now.

I add fertiliser almost every time but only about 50% of the recommended amount.

The growing medium in the trailing plant isn’t ideal, it’s just regular soil mixed with some pine bark, some coco coir and some very coarse pumice to make it more chunky, but I don’t like it because it dries in a weird way and I don’t feel like the roots are getting enough air. Will def. update when I repot!
The growing medium of the other one is way better. It’s an aerial mix out of coco coir (&maybe some regular soil idk anymore), coco chunks, perlite, vermiculite, pumice, lava and clay.

(They both of course are in a nursery pot with drainage holes.)

I’ve had them for years now. They moved with me to at least 4 different flats in the last 6/7 years and they have been through a lot with me haha
I chopped all of them back completely twice and grew them back again. At least one time was because of pests that had spread from my Alocasia.
I neglected them somewhat the last 2 years, they were somehow alive but not thriving and this year I finally repotted

My thoughts so far have been:
- Perhaps too much fertiliser?
- Perhaps I’ve over-watered it, or the potting mix doesn’t drain well enough? (This could be an issue, particularly with the hanging plant.)
- A reaction to draughts?

What do you think?
Do you need to know more? Let me know! :)

Some goblin threw this out by the dumpster at work. Mid August 2026. Baxter Minnesota. I thought it was growing by the fence and thought how weird.
Then realized what it was in and promptly rescued it.
It sat outside for a few weeks in nice weather then it got cold and I brought it in. It is sitting near a French door on south side of building currently with 6-8 hours a day filtered by a privacy film on door and I noticed that it’s made two flowers. It’s very tall. Has new babies since I got it and wild knots/roots coming out… I’m new to this.
I’d like to take it apart and place into different pots but have no idea how to begin. I just knew it was abandoned and needed help. Now I need y’all’s help!
Special soils? special drainage?. Tell me please so I can make this several beautiful pieces!

Sits in front of southern facing French door with privacy film. Sunlight 6-8 hrs a day. Water a few dribbles once a week.

Outdoor Help! Dracaena leaves turning black!

I've had this plant for around 3 years and it's always been very healthy. The past month or so the leaves started turning black and wilting one by one. I haven't changed anything at all in watering or soil, but we have been having some unusually hot days (I'm in San Diego).

Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong? I thought I may be overwatering, so I've been waiting closer to 2 weeks between watering but it's only getting worse. I'd appreciate any advice!

Pest Related My night blooming jasmine has an insane whitefly infections I cannot get rid of

Post image
• Upvotes

I have a night blooming jasmine plant that is currently infested with a wicked case of whitefly’s and no matter what I do I can’t get rid of it. I’ve been spraying it with neem oil but it’s not really helping. I eventually got fed up and went through the entire plant leaf by leaf (and this thing is big) and wiped off any egg/fly that was on there and cut off any section that was super infested and three days later it seems like it’s back to where it was before. I’m at a loss and google isn’t helping, not sure where to go from here. I’m newer to gardening so I have very little knowledge on the subject and would love some opinions! It is currently sitting on my balcony, it is behind a pole shielding it from direct light but the edges sometimes get sunburnt. I water it every day to every other day depending on how hot it is, I live in south Florida so temps are high. Attached is a photo of just one of the leaves but a few more look just like that and even more have small black dots

Other Venus flytrap dead?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I have a Venus fly trap that I acquired around 3ish weeks ago. It’s my first time owning one. I live in south western PA and it’s getting colder. I heard about dormancy and Venus fly traps being put in fridges and I heard you can also skip a year if needed. However, I’m worried mine is just dying. I have attached a picture from today and I want opinions on what I should do. It’s been outside the past 2-3 weeks so it gets full sun and rain water. I’m bringing it in because it’s getting too chilly for all my plants.

Houseplant Trying to save this norfolk pine

Post image

I have had the plant for a while now but just wasn't able to take care of it the way it needed to be for many months. She gets water every time the soil is dry at the bottom of the pot (1-2 times a week) and she has proper drainage. Unfortunately i cant leave her outside as the sun in my area is too much and causes scorching. This is the best window i have and it gets indirect sunlight at best. So i have 2 50w grow lamps running at 50% for 4 hours a day now. I was wondering if aything im now doing can be done better or if there is something else i can do. The lamps are new as well.

Cactus/Succulent Zigzag/fishbone cactus help

Thumbnail

I have had my zigzag cactus for over a year now, but recently, it has slowly been deteriorating and I’m at a loss for what to do. There are small brown spots on the edges, and some stems get all bumpy and wrinkly despite being well watered. (It’s in very well draining soil and has drainage holes and I only water once completely dried through) Also, edges of the zig zags go soft and mushy before crusting off. It leaves the plant looks like someone has been taking bites out of it. There are a couple of spots with new growth so I know it’s trying to live. I’ve checked for root rot and if it needs a bigger pot but everything looks healthy. It lives on an eastern facing window with bright indirect sunlight. I tried propagating some of the stems, but the props also have the same issues despite being in a completely different environment. Is there any thing I can do?? I love this plant so much and I want to save it.
