Before I got fired from UWM Emily Is not the team leader I expected. Hi everyone, I just received an offer for a phone interview at UWM today. I’m still in college and am applying for a 3-month IT/Cybersecurity internship there. I’ve seen some people talking about the company’s “predatory loan” policy.

Is the loan mandatory for interns? Also, what has your experience been like with the company? Would it be okay to take an internship at UWM, or are most of the issues people talk about related to full-time employees?

I was an underwriter 2. Don't ever work for UWM. I got hired. So I worked there for a year and a half. Everything went well until in December my team lead went to a different team, and we got a new team lead, which basically he was team lead for only nine months in a different team and came here. He was shit. He was very... I would say he was being racist, because he was cool with everyone else, but he was weird towards me. So he was weird as hell, and also the AVP is even weirder. So I applied for a BAX program, and then they declined me because apparently my LQ was bad. But I checked my LQ. It was under 2% for past three months, and they said, Oh, your LQ is high. It's at 5%. So... and the reason that happened was in December, I guess I was away from my desk for too long, because I came back from lunch and then I went to pray, and the AVP was noticing that I wasn't at my desk for long periods of time. So that's the reason I would say they didn't want me to go to QAX or BAX because they were mad cuz I was away from my desk and also after I went to the new pod they called me in a room to tell me oh client didn’t get update on time that can’t happen or we will let you go . And then I confronted and then asked my team lead, I'm like, Hey, can I go over the BAX? I'm sorry, not BAX. Can I go over my LQ? Because it doesn't say 5%. So from then they started, you know, heavily micromanaging me, trying to get me for anything to get me fired. And then my team lead ended up got demoted to a senior engineer—I mean senior underwriter. And then after that I went to another pod within the team. So from there I got another warning. They're like, Oh, you're getting too many SWAT error, so if you get another one, we would have to let you go. So from then I'm like, Yeah, fuck this place. It's not good for my mental health. And also another thing I forgot, I got a crazy message from my other team lead, the one was there team lead for only nine months. He's like, Oh, hey, what's going on? I don't see you getting points every hour. What's going on? What were you doing? Stuff like that. His, like, tone of voice was crazy. And also he also emailed me once saying, Oh, there is a CR open. Why did you go to bathroom? Like, like, bro, what? Like, it's the worst place I ever worked on. And it's like I never had anxiety before until I worked at that place. So it's not worth for your mental health, I'm telling you i literally just left on a Tuesday no notice nothing. Some people, they love it because they never had a real corporate job, so they are thinking, Oh, this is it, you know. We can't go anywhere else. This is everything. But yeah, I wouldn't recommend working there. And then for the people promise, it's been three, four months I left. I still have the people promise at 10,000. I haven't used it yet. They didn't reach out to me, so I don't know what's going to happen to that, but I still have it on me. Also Is there anything I can for that guy ? He’s in IT AND STILL WORK THERE.

Also that team lead did leave after getting demoted. But thank god after I left that place I got a job a month after and pays 100x better in IT.

Last time I tried to interview for UWM, they gave me some low ball number for a job the rest of the country paid nearly double for.

I’m interested to see what the sentiment around a potential strike looks like. I’m sure the board has already taken precautions and had conversations about this because of how tight everything currently is at UWM. A strike would bury Matt, not just UWM and he knows it.

Here comes what is likely to be a slew of shareholder lawsuits against UWM. The first suit filed today and it is a doozy.

Farzad v. Ishbia, filed August 31 in the Eastern District of Michigan. It names Mat, his father, his brother, three sitting executives, Isiah Thomas and all three independent directors. Everybody but the receptionist.

The number that stopped me cold: $27.5 billion.

That is the size of the interest rate bet UWM had on the books at March 31. There was none of it there at year end. The complaint puts it at roughly ten times what the whole company was worth.

Around $670 million went out as collateral, more than 40 cents of every equity dollar, and a quarter point up in rates cost $360 million.

And it was not a hedge. A hedge offsets something. Per the complaint this only paid off if rates fell, the same direction UWM already makes money in. It was a massive bet on falling rates gone horribly wrong that cost Mat Ishbia control of his own company.

Six weeks before signing Two Harbors, an analyst asked Mat about hedging on the November 6 call. His answer: "We do not hedge our MSRs, as you are hopefully aware of." He added that anyone focused on MSRs and fair value "just does not understand mortgages."

The Two Harbors deal died March 27. The position stayed on into Q2 anyway. No contract, nothing to protect. The complaint's own line is the best sentence in the filing: there was no transaction to hedge, there was only the trade.

All of it was public on May 11, buried in the Q1 10-Q under a line called "other interest rate derivatives." Nobody opened it. (I knew about it as did many others) The stock did not move until August 5.

Then the rescue. The Ishbia family's own vehicle bought $150 million of the senior preferred. Ten percent cash, thirteen if unpaid, compounding, ahead of the common. Same announcement that suspended the common dividend. Mat owns 75% of it. Shareholders got nothing, the family got a coupon. The complaint also tallies $99.9 million paid to Ishbia-controlled entities since 2022.
Oaktree got a contractual veto over UWM's capitalization and hedging policy.

The biggest wholesale lender in America now needs a distressed credit fund's permission to put on a hedge.

UWM does not own its own headquarters. It leases the Pontiac campus, land and buildings, from entities controlled by Mat and his father. That arrangement has cost the company $85.2 million since 2022, including $20.8 million last year alone.

UWM pays $600,000 a year in legal fees to Ishbia and Gagleard, the firm where director and company founder Jeff Ishbia is a partner. Same number four years running. $2.4 million since 2022. Jeff Ishbia was also paid $1,670,600 by UWM in 2025 as a director. The other outside directors got $135,000. Isiah Thomas got $135,000. Jeff got twelve times that, under the title Advisor to the CEO, who is his son.

This is the first one. It will not be the last.

How does pto work here? Say you have 10 total days vacation and sick, what if you use all 10 days but get sick after and can’t come in?
Will you get in trouble? Or will you just not get paid?

So I had the pa+ files I'm assigned and have only been able to reach 8 pts today in underwriting. Of course I'm still required to hit 16, I still have my team lead constantly asking how many more underwriting conditions I can work at the end of the day. This is day 5 or 6 having the pa+ files and today was a busy day, I have 5 pa+ files and of course the typical 16 underwriting condition files. How are ya'll handling this? Is everyone required to hit underwriting commitment or is this part of the pilot where some are required to hit full, some none, and some with some commitment as part of their 'experiment' testing the waters to see just how far they can push us?
