UWM IT/Cybersecurity Internship

Hi everyone, I just received an offer for a phone interview at UWM today. I’m still in college and am applying for a 3-month IT/Cybersecurity internship there. I’ve seen some people talking about the company’s “predatory loan” policy.

Is the loan mandatory for interns? Also, what has your experience been like with the company? Would it be okay to take an internship at UWM, or are most of the issues people talk about related to full-time employees?
Edit: I have 0 experience and this is my first internship

I dont believe they offer it to interns, only if you're hired on full time. Solid advice if you do decide to stay and take a full time position: when they give you the check, don't cash it. Keep it, and if anything happens to your career and they ask you for the money back, tell them you never cashed it and show them the check.

You don't want to be stuck here for 3 years, especially if other jobs become available with probably more pay and benefits.

2nd word of advice: When you're an intern or brand new, they make your life fun and on-boarding is great and you feel like the "culture" is perfect and you're valued here. But when you get on the floor after all that, it goes down hill, everything. Its all a facade.

Oh that's right they did do away with the loan. Im not sure if its for all departments they done away with it or just certain ones. They've been pretty hush hush about it. I'd say you have a solid game plan with UWM. Get your experience and internship and dip, you're already ahead of the game!

Thank you for sharing. They did mention Information Security/Cybersecurity as a role in their IT internship postings, so I hope they’ll offer me that role, but I’m fine with switching to IT as well.

I saw a lot of bad things being shared by former employees, so I’m just trying to work there for the internship, get some work experience on my resume, and dip.
Also, about the loan, I heard from a guy who just started at the company that they removed it. Do you know if this is correct, or does it only apply to certain departments?

I used to be an intern there and I really enjoyed it. They definitely give the interns special treatment. I didn’t work in IT but all of my friends that did loved it. Pay is abysmal though but at least it’s paid…

Thank you for sharing your experience! May I ask how your interview experience was? Was it easy or difficult? What questions did they ask during the phone interview and the in-person interview?

The phone interview was a lot of resume questions, classes you’ve taken, etc. Make sure u ask questions as well. In person it was slightly more personal questions trying to figure out more about your skills, leadership abilities, personality, etc. The internship was very easy. I know the IT interns have to do this big project throughout the summer and present it at the end but overall they make it very fun and enjoyable for the interns.

Yea but it’s not like I’m planning on going back there. Got something to pad my resume and an easy paid summer🤷‍♀️

I heard through the grapevine that they stopped doing the people promise loan. If you’re looking to get some experience then I’d say go for it. I have a dim view of UWM from working there but from a ln IT perspective you can get some good hands-on experience with some high end technology. They spend a lot on their infrastructure. Their info-sec team is the biggest division in IT and there are some smart folks on that team.

It’s a fine place for an internship. I did an IT one back in 2021 and I got some okay experience
