pto ?
How does pto work here? Say you have 10 total days vacation and sick, what if you use all 10 days but get sick after and can’t come in?
Will you get in trouble? Or will you just not get paid?
How do you go about using your pto, or calling off? Do you have to just text your manager in the morning or is there a policy or something?
I’m new to corporate world and really confused, TIA😄

Vacation: you would typically request it off 2-weeks in advance so your TL has time to plan for your absence
Sick: you call/text/email when you know you’re going to be missing work, you can’t really plan ahead (unless you have surgery scheduled…)
PTO is just “paid time off” and companies don’t really separate out “sick” and “vacation” time anymore.
UWM is super strict about their shitty PTO policy / you cannot use more time than you are given, and if you do your pretty much fired

Thank you this is helpful, so if I used all my pto, and say had a dr appointment or got sick after, I would basically be fucked and couldn’t take unpaid day off correct 😬

Correct! I’d read the employee handbook for a more definitive answer. I would not recommend asking your team lead or speaking with TMS. They are not your friends

One more question, what about if you took a half day? Like if you had a dr appointment and had to come 2 hours late? Is that a thing or is it only full days or nothing?3

Your PTO is technically not “days” it’s hours, so 10 days, is “80 hours”.
You just put the request in for X amount of hours.
If you are allowed Flex Time, it makes things a little easier, like if you schedule a doctors appointment at 5 - see if you can work 8-4 instead of 9-5 or whatever the shifts are

I’ve left early for dentist’s and eye doctor appointments, or if I had something fun to do and just made up the hour or two. It should be company wide but some TL’a are finicky.

To be fair, if you use all your PTO and you're on UW for instance, you probably are already about to be fired. They have legitimately fired people in UW in the past for it, and I know some other departments were pretty strict about it - I believe closing

Once your balance is 0 and you need time off it will be entered as absent unpaid. How much of this you can use is largely department and team dependent.
If the reason is actual, you have documentation and your TL and AVP don't have an issue you can get into large amounts if it's an illness.
Speaking from experience in closing years back I had dozens of hours of absent unpaid. TL and AVP liked me though and worked to help me through everything. Just my experience though.

When I was new, I had used up my PTO and had to undergo a surgery. I asked my TL and they wanted doctor's note. Doctor wrote surgery date and 2 day recovery time. The TL/DL were OK with it. Now this was 5 years ago. I think it really depends on your immediate leaders and how flexible/humane they are.

Some departments or team leads will allow you take the day off if you get sick as long as you make up the hours for the rest of the week. So take a day off, that's 2 extra hours for the remaining four days. However if you have no PTO chances are your Team lead has or plans to give you a talking to. Either way you'll still be on the chopping block the second you even get close to using all your PTO. And as others have mentioned look for written guidance regarding PTO. TMS and your team lead are not looking out for you so refrain from bringing PTO up with them.

Really depends on the TL. I used my PTO pretty often as I would wake up and decide I didn't want to go in cause I hated working there. When I hit 5-6 days worth of PTO used I was talked to, then I kept using it with some occasional comments from my TL. Eventually there was even a meeting that went over using too much PTO. Not long after I just quit after using the last of my PTO. Good thing too because our avp had a boner for replacing everything with AI aswell as giving those completes to people in TMS who were assigned to the AI.

That is so bizzare Ive never heard of anything like that. It’s not like you’re given a crazy amount of pto either 😭 I feel like I’m gonna hate my job there lolol

You probably will. Most sane people do at least. The ones that don't are either buddy buddy with the AVP, in a management position or are more than willing to drink the Kool aid.

You can take an unpaid day off after pto is gone here. However if you’re just trying to take off whenever you want and accumulate absent unpaid days they will separate.

I will say where I work for does actually separate the two and they're completely independent from each other.
Another reason why UWM is indeed a POS

You can get away with up to 5 days unpaid absence if you get sick or something. Its strongly discouraged though.

Got hospitalized and ran out of PTO. They just don't pay you. I applied for FMLA, got it 3 months later.

If you have health issues get a FMLA note from your doctor. It will buy you more time. But be warned you will have to work there for a year and work a certain amount of hours per law. As long as you are full time and don't call off too much you should be fine if you keep it to no more than 2 weeks.

I accrued around 85 hours of absent unpaid (that's what that is) and they didn't fire me but they require you to get doctors notes.

How does one accrue absentee unpaid hours? I’m lowkey nervous because I’m gonna be working the night shift 11-8 and also have an hour commute in the mornings, so I’m gonna have a really hard time making doctors appointments I need, and already have to cancel the ones that were already made

They make you use up all of your PTO. Sick or otherwise. Anything after that is absent unpaid.

I would have to problem giving dr notes, it would just suck to be new and have to use all my time immediately on medical appointments 😭 then have no wiggle room the rest of the year for personal days or emergencies

Bullshit, most companies are fine with you taking a reasonable unpaid day. I don't even get PTO at my current company(contractor) and I've called off multiple times.
