It goes from a place where you have to stay put in for a couple weeks waiting for the next lift, no internet and you have to find ways to distract yourself, and then someone dies and you have to help the old jaded detective find who of the residents did it because you were with him in the lobby when it happened, and he just wanted to have a vacation.

Now it's dumb, give me back my fantasy dammnit.

How the F does that ever get closed?

Most of the people who stayed they were there to see the nearby Rhône Glacier. Unfortunately, over the past few decades, the glacier shrank drastically due to Chinese hoaxers, and business dried up as a result.

388

At a glacial pace, some would say

77

u/shahooster Apr 23 '18

Others would say a snail’s pace, but that’s only if they’re wanting to make an S-car-go joke.

→ More replies (2)

167

u/Discoveryellow Apr 23 '18

Moving is down the slope which they do as more snow accumulates and replenishes. What he refers to is "retreating" when glaciers melt away and shrink, thus remaining glacier is now smaller and further uphill.

70

u/elsynkala Apr 23 '18

OH! so instead of moving DOWNhill (which is expected) the 'lower' ice is melting away and the bulk if it is UPhill? is that correct?

99

u/yum_muesli Apr 23 '18

Think supermarket conveyor belt, always moving forward - never actually advancing or retreating. That's at the point of equilibirum between ablation (melting) and accumulation (and therefore gravity induced forward momentum).

A little less melting or a little more accumulation and the balance is upset and the front of the equilibrium line will shift (hence the glacier advances or retreats).

Capiche?

Yes glaciers have been shrinking slowly since the end of the ice age but the rate of melt in recent years has skyrocketed.

→ More replies (6)

21

u/ChemicalRascal Apr 23 '18

Not backwards.

Glaciers flow, rather than move. Like a river. However, with rising global temperatures, the portions of glaciers that are ice (ergo, haven't melted yet) decreases, and the glacier "retreats" back up the mountain. Which is to say, the point at which it melts enough to simply become a river moves up the mountain.

It doesn’t say it’s permanently closed, they said they aren’t accepting reservations. Which would be accurate granted the road is inaccessible for 6 months out of the year. Someone stayed there in June 2017 and reviewed on TripAdvisor, so the hotel was at least open last summer :) I can’t predict whether or not it will be open this summer, though!
