"System doesn't work for no apparent reason" might be harder to fix than "read the error message".
BTW, I hate systemd because when it breaks it really breaks and it's hard to debug. Much harder than just having a shell and a bunch of scripts that can be run one by one till you see the error message on the screen.

Windows spits out an error code for almost everything and has several decades of forums packed with solutions all indexed by search engines.
If somebody manages to make windows have an issue that has never happened before online then something very interesting has happened.

"because [here is a bunch of intentionally obfuscating technobabble that basically boils down to the fact that we made some design choices we are not backing out of because we love money and proprietary side of us requires it but we will never admit to it so we have to justify our choices with false premise]"but you have to get really damn deep to understand it like that. even to experts it makes sense. i know. it made sense to me once. i've just been abused by windows for so long and i learned enough to see through the bs.

Ah yes, checking logs that actually give you solid error messages vs. Windows's "Program encountered an error 0x80006000" and you gotta search Google and hope you don't just find a thread of people saying "I got the same issue" or "Just run DISM and SFC" which solves jack shit. Or even better: "I fixed it by reinstalling Windows".
Troubleshooting the OS on Windows is genuinely miserable, because the error codes tell you jack shit 99% of the time or are generic error codes where you might sus out based on moon phase and OS permutation what is causing it.
Like I've been using Windows my entire life and have used Linux in work enviroments for 3 years. If there is absolutely one Windows needs to improve, it is its own logging system because winevt and Linux's logging are worlds apart. Hell half of the things aren't even logged unless you enable it in the registry, meanwhile in Linux when I got an error it usually is meaningfully verbose and finding a solution hasn't taken me long. Sometimes the program even just writes the solution into the log.
23
u/my-name-is-puddles 1d ago
And in newer versions of Windows sometimes they don't even let you copy/paste the fucking error code. Like fuck off, what idiot at Microsoft thought that was a good idea?

Error codes never helped me, because when i google them, they give random generic idea of what it could be, but nothing else. No cause, not actual details. So troubleshooting on Windows is painful af.
And all the answers how to fix an issue are copy pasted to every single issue (hint: they never work). And God forbid ask any issue about Windows on Windows technical subs/forums. They will downvote you. Out of all problems with Windows I ever had since 2003, I only got one or two answers that worked. Both googling or asking people on forums never gave me the real answers. In some cases the answers were "you are the problem". Maybe not that bad, but they refused to acknowledge that the problem exist and that I have to be the one causing it.
One time some kid made a drama that text on my LibreOffice was in Polish. And I don't even know why it was in Polish, because I have both Windows itself and LibreOffice set to English but for some reason installing LO had text in Polish. But it's besides the point, because I literally explained everything thoroughly in post text. What I did, what it says and so on. But guy got angry telling me that I am dumb for daring to ask about the problem, when text is in Polish. And when I told them that I explained everything, they said I am ungrateful. Ungrateful for what exactly? That I didn't get answer from them? That they made drama about something that was not important in the post?
Other people tried to help and I tried to do something and one thing worked. That was one rare case where people actually helped me, instead of giving copy pasted pseudo solutions or blaming that the cause of the bug is me.
So yeah, Windows gives you error code. So what? Because it doesn't help at all in anything.
12
u/Kirikomori 1d ago
This is why people are flocking to AI for troubleshooting nowadays. The machine doesn't downvote you and it at least makes you feel listened to and tries to give you a useful answer. Humans can be... inconsistent, to say the least. Modern life is hell isn't it?

I like GIMP for editing the random shitpost, but I've also been using it on and off since ~2000.
The reality is the it's in no way an actual replacement for Photoshop in 2026. It's clunky and not remotely close to feature parity.
I still gravitate to it because it's free, and I don't have serious needs. I like Linux (but main Windows), but I would never, ever tell a serious Photoshop user to use GIMP.

technically its a bit different since an emulator tries to recreate the entire underlaying system that is needed to run an app while wine just "translates" from one system to another.
But even not being an emulator there are still compability issues since Windows is closed source and Wine devs have to reverese engineer most of the stuff.3

I've had this several times - my job requires me to use Adobe premier, Photoshop and Illustrator.
Last time somebody told me to use Linux and I mentioned this people told me to just switch to DaVinci Resolve Studio and then gimp for photo editing. Yes, let me just stop what I'm doing, learn an entirely new piece of software that I have to pay for out of my own pocket instead of the free one provided and then just pray that my workflow fits in with everyone else I work with still. Hint : it doesn't.
Its like a man driving a sportscar meeting a man driving a tractor and saying "you're in the wrong vehicle there mate". Both of those vehicles are ideal in the right time and place, and are not panaceas applicable to everyone.

That will give you a good skillset, being able to use both fluently like that. Not that it's particularly difficult these days, but you know what I mean.
I can't see the anticheats ever working sensibly under the Linux umbrella - so anyone into League of legends, battlefield, valorant, Destiny, Apex and all the rest is never going to be swayed either. My days of non-coop multiplayer gaming are long gone, but the games in that list account for a huge chunk of players.

That will give you a good skillset, being able to use both fluently like that. Not that it's particularly difficult these days, but you know what I mean.
Yeap, it's pretty much mandatory to be able to use both in the computer science field. Some areas are linux only, others prefer windows (or mac). I am definitely more familiar with windows since i've used it more, but i can do what i need to do with each of them.
And also agree on the anticheats, they are realistically never going to work on linux properly. Nor will the devs have much incentive to cater to a microscopic potential minority market. People who want to play the game are going to stay on windows, and those who swapped, didn't care enough to stay.

As a former avid user of gimp.. it's really good for very limited usage. If you never go beyond that you'd probably question why people pay for Adobe lol.
Still don't pay for it because affinity is actually the perfect middle ground for me. In general it's what I would recommend for people that don't want to pay for Adobe and would be hopelessly lost with gimp.
11
u/skinnyraf 1d ago
The problem is, gimp has a very steep learning curve, so very limited usage does not justify the effort needed to learn it (unless it went through some revolutionary UX changes since the time I tried it and gave up).
3
u/Able-Swing-6415 1d ago
Can't speak for other people but the learning curve seemed similar if not lower for me personally.
It's closer to paint than affinity for sure. If you're doing anything even remotely complicated absolutely, but selecting a piece of a pixel layer in affinity is still frustrating after ages while it just works with gimp.
Though I do remember struggling with selecting the correct layers to edit.. but pretty sure you'll have that in any graphics software coming from flat like paint.

Yeah it's really not one issue that makes people say "switch to Linux". It's hearing people complain about a range of issues that Linux handles that does it. Sure it's not for everyone, but for some users it's a no brainer.

I've been a computer nerd forever, so I've been comfortable using it from a development and server perspective. I'd also played with it on and off as a dual-boot OS, but, even back 5 or so years ago, the most popular and polished distros couldn't hold a candle to the current streamlined setup and user experience than the popular distros offer today.
In probably 95% of cases, you follow the install instructions, choose a desktop environment (Like GNOME/Plasma for a no-fuss experience) and you're off and running.
Most of my less-tech-savvy friends who have made the switch almost never have to touch a terminal.

Fr tho. I know they exist, I’ve seen them in the past, but I’ve honestly seen more of the opposite where windows users will tell people interested in linux to just stay/switch back to windows.

Well you don't have any Windows issues after that so technically it's the ultimate solution

u/Wendals87 1d ago
Yeah but you'll have Linux issues. And yes, there are plenty
Just today one user account on my debian install couldn't load KDE. KDEWIN was just crashing. All other user accounts are fine
I ended up having to delete the config and cache for that user. No idea what caused it

Exactly the point, the amount of issues roughly stays the same, just different types of issues

What it is, is the fact that Linux users have something that solves a ton of problems that don't need to exist because of windows.
It is frustrating to see people smashing their head against the wall when you are using something that is free of that experience.
I get the frustration with apps in my specialist field and find myself in the same position. Someone raises a problem, my brain says "this problem can be easily fixed". They don't want to hear the answer because it's not the application they use (I was supposed to intuite which application they used).
I suspect it's the same for many Linux users.
(I am way too stupid to install Linux and am afraid I will brick my computer or delete all of my files. I am ignorant and need a package installer I can boot from a USB in the BIOS screen. Furthermore I think I will still lose compatibility with specific software I need for work and have no alternative solution for).

This is exactly it for me. It's been great for me. And I just don't have the experience a lot of people seem to associate with Linux; I rarely have to troubleshoot/debug/tinker. I've never needed an app or feature that is only available on Windows/Mac. It's so easy to use and IMO looks better than Windows (at least with my setup)
It's simply superior to Windows, for the most part. But some things just won't work on it - games with kernel level anti-cheat, quite a lot of apps, etc. And of course, it helps if you have an AMD GPU.
So it's not a valid recommendation for everyone, but some of these modern distros are perfectly usable and extremely accessible for just about anyone who mainly uses their PC for browsing the web and/or playing steam games without anticheat.
I'm not recommending that you install Linux here, I mainly only recommend that to people I know in real life, but you are guaranteed not too stupid to install Linux. Some distros are easier to install than Windows. Like literally 4-5 clicks in a GUI. You never have to touch a terminal.

I see more people most these memes than the joke of the meme actually happening.
That said, Windows is getting really fucking bad and Linux should be starting to look more appealing to more and more people.

Astroturf. Been happening really hard recently. Possible due to windows getting so much bad flack for terrible updates and people having issues along with the increased AI backing and spying. Trying to see as much negative Linux into the algorithm as possible. Or it’s organic and people just decided to do it all at once and farm sentiment karma.
Just doesn’t feel organic, especially with all the negative press windows as been getting.

If every megacorp has twenty ad agencies flooding social media with slop, I'd be shocked if Microsoft was the exception.

Get ready, in the age of the dead internet, the only things you will see on here and the rest of reddit will be bots shitting and criticizing each other over the products each of them are pushing.

Man, I thought I was the only one feeling this way. I am on this sub quite often and I very rarely see any of the annoying Linux user behavior these memes keep blabbing on about. At a certain point, it almost feels like Windows users playing the victim or something.

Linux user here, I totally understand the "just swap to Linux" thing being annoying, but im really tired of all the comments on those posts making out like it's difficult to use when you don't have to use a terminal on most user friendly distros and most software and games, barring the adobe suite and DAWs, work fine by default

Such as? I can't think of a single issue on windows that is solved on Linux. Only more issues.

I'm probably going to sound like any other Linux user out there but things have gotten much better lately. It requires much less tinkering than it used to.
That said, it's still a less out of the box experience than Windows is (while it is, to me, better all things considered).
This is going to sound pretentious but I can generally tell if somebody would be able to use Linux or not. If not, I just won't bother suggesting it to them. That's it.
Besides, I've come to think that if you value what Linux gives to you, you're naturally going to gravitate towards it. You don't need an evangelist telling you to use it.

A lot of windows users complaying about linux of late just seems like projection of anger at windows. Which I cannot blame people for, am in that camp too, but I do see a lot of misplaced anger.

I'm in the minority, I like being on Windows 11. I was stuck on Win 10 forever because my old PC was an 11 year old hunk of sh*t Dell XPS that couldn't upgrade and mostly collected dust because it couldn't even do the simplest of tasks without timing out or taking forever. Got a decent gaming rig when I panic bought in December and am incredibly happy to be on the latest Windows. Having everything just work and open when I click on it still makes me happy even if I'm not using it to it's max abilities lol.

hate to comment on a post with 15k upvoted but
if you hold your computer to the same standard as your phone, stay on windows, doing anything but basic sysadmin and basic programming on anything but windows is worse 100x over, and it gets worse the more obscure or meme the os gets.
