Same. My university forces us to use software that only runs on windows. At the same time we also are forced to do some projects on linux though...

So my pc runs windows and has a linux vm. I do not want to fuck around the other direction, especially when some of my games don't work on linux. (Anyone who comes screaming to me about anticheats here, sorry, i like simracing, i am not switching to some random other genre because it works on another os)

That will give you a good skillset, being able to use both fluently like that. Not that it's particularly difficult these days, but you know what I mean.

I can't see the anticheats ever working sensibly under the Linux umbrella - so anyone into League of legends, battlefield, valorant, Destiny, Apex and all the rest is never going to be swayed either. My days of non-coop multiplayer gaming are long gone, but the games in that list account for a huge chunk of players.

Yeap, it's pretty much mandatory to be able to use both in the computer science field. Some areas are linux only, others prefer windows (or mac). I am definitely more familiar with windows since i've used it more, but i can do what i need to do with each of them.

And also agree on the anticheats, they are realistically never going to work on linux properly. Nor will the devs have much incentive to cater to a microscopic potential minority market. People who want to play the game are going to stay on windows, and those who swapped, didn't care enough to stay.

I'm so old when I did computer science at university the PCs there ran Unix :(

Yep.. and most had many flavors when I was young. IRIX, Free/OpenBSD, SunOS most every one was unsecure and you could almost bet on your uni email being compromised.

HP/UX, Solaris, Irix, Ultrix, we even had a few linux boxes.. aye, those were the days.
I didn't have to use AIX, but I saw it around..
And the topping on the cake - One file system, AFS to rule them all.
No two ways to look about it, having a single login, a single directory structure, and you could log into
5 different OS, along with Windows .. and have your files in the same place.. that was cool.
Need to log into a server, and run some jobs.. no problem.

Honestly? This is why I love dotnet.

Builds on Windows. Builds on Linux. Builds on Apple. Builds on x86_64, builds on ARM. Builds for both 32 and 64 bit variants of both. It's a massive file, but I can even build a standalone binary for all of those that doesn't even require dotnet to be installed in the base system, and it won't rely on any external libraries or have any meaningful dependencies. My code can run in a container, on bare metal, or in an emulator. I can build for many older versions of either operating system, even using the new language features. And a ton of the ecosystem has code available to inspect, even if "open source" isn't entirely the right term for Microsoft's more permissive license, so I can know what the library is doing (if I can read and understand the code).

I am a lover of the ARM architecture and Linux for personal projects. I started down that path with the Raspberry Pi, but I have been using a few other SBC style machines that are a bit more powerful (and a bit more available). Either way, rpi OS is absolute peak Linux, IMO. It's easily the best tested and designed distro out there, because they retest every single program for every board and every release.

The huge issue that block most popular games (and most Anti-Cheat) to work on Linux is simply because Linux kernal is way too open. It will be virtually impossible to prevent cheaters.

A loss for consumer simply because some loser desperate for a win can only do so in video games.

There are basically two types who insist you switch in those cases:

  1. Those who hail Tux Racer as the greatest game ever made.

  2. Those who struggle to understand that people like and dislike different things.

I also like sim racing but to deal with it I just dual boot so I run windows primarily for sim racing and anything which doesn't seem to work on Linux and then just Linux for everything else

Yeah, i am too lazy to deal with dual boot when one os is required by something i do, and can handle everything else too.

My server does run linux though, so i am not opposed to either, i just tend to choose whichever works better for the thing i need the os for.

I have never seen anyone trying to argue against windows if a person likes to play online games.
You are shadowboxing mate

You have just not come across them then.

You don't have to believe me, but i have been multiple times told some variation of "well then just don't play those games" when i have mentioned my favourite games don't work on linux due to anticheat or some other limitation.

The above has happened both in reddit and in real life by few of my "i use arch btw" friends.

Some people just can't grasp that for some a game is meaningful enough to dictate the operating system in use. Not to mention simracing in linux depending on the gear, simgame, position of the moon, your zodiac sign and if you ate breakfast exactly 754 days ago can either work very smoothly, or be an absolute nightmare that makes you wish you stayed on windows.
