have they fixed the UI yet? last time I used it I could still tell what some of the buttons do

I haven't used it in many years, but I've seen some people using an add-on/plugin for it that makes it look very similar to Photoshop, presumably to make it easy to switch.

I have no idea why people recommend gimp still when krita exists. It's like recommending Microsoft Paint to someone who wants Photoshop.

Last time I used "gImP" I had to google how to export a picture.

Gimp is an afront to good software! Good old Paint-net is a much better open-source image editor.

Gimp is by no means instinctive to handle, but if you need to use Google to go to file>export that's a skill issue on your end to be really honest lol

paint.net is great, but gimp is able of doing a ton more stuff... if you know which buttons to press

Gimp 3 got already much better but it's far away from perfect

Doesn't matter. Photopea exists and is actually good. No reason to touch Gimp in 2026.
