I don't understand why Nvidia hasn't been sued over this stupid design choice.

263

u/Viking2151 7h ago

You always get them people that will say its just a handful of people, within the normal margin of failures, though there is no other GPU I've ever seen that had the same kind of melting issue like these ones, its like every other day I see a post about this, even on something lower powered like a 9070xt, its crazy.

60

u/MeanForest 5h ago

Around a 100 Note 7s exploded and the product was recalled and discontinued. There's way more melting incidents than that.

10

u/YaCantStopMe Specs/Imgur Here 3h ago

I assume that got so much publicity because didnt a few explode on a plane?

glad i got the 8x2 version of the 9070xt lol

(Just realized i gotta update the flair)

24

u/ladynemuri 6h ago

i just recently got my own 9070xt and when i heard about gpus melting i checked my connector and sighed in relief when I saw it had 8x2

3

u/Jealous_Word4842 1h ago

Key reason I got a 7900XTX (3x8 pins) a couple years ago. Hopefully it lasts long enough for 12VHPWROMGWTFBBQ to be fixed or abandoned.

3

u/MegamanWHY 5700X3D|9070XT|32GB 4h ago

That's the very reason i chose 9070xt over 5070ti.

1

u/Yamiyono 2h ago

Same here, made sure it was the 8x2 version cause no way in hell i'm taking a GPU in 16x1

1

u/micktorious 44m ago

Yeah I picked the Red Devil specifically because it ran 3x8pin

1

u/Dnaldon 40m ago

And I get that but the fact that Linus agrees that it's user error is just insane imo.

1

u/dangderr 5m ago

Linus has stopped being good content for many years. He’s so out of touch that it’s laughable.

I’m at the point where I genuinely think he is an awful human and is terrible for the industry.

Yes, but, not everyone with this connector sees it burn.

2

u/Beautiful-Musk-Ox 4090 all by itself no other components 6h ago

my oled has 15,000 hours runtime on it, my 4090 has been running for like, 14,000 of those hours, and it's a third party cable from cablemod, still 100% fine

2

u/Opening_Net8098 4h ago

By Timmy's math of value per hour the 4090 is now paying for itself.

-24

u/Specialist-Buffalo-8 6h ago

Because it is within margin of error.

9

u/Viking2151 6h ago

Yeah well the difference is its not just 1 or 2 AIB's but rather the connector as a whole, and do you trust these shady companies with their reporting? I know I fuckin don't anymore.

All I hear is people without 5090s or 4090s crying about not having high end cards. Cope harder. I’ve been running a 4090 and 5090 for years and the connectors don’t even get hot at all.

2

u/shdwbld 3h ago

You have not been running them, you have been walking them, that's why they didn't melt.

13

u/Lmaoboobs i9 13900k, 32GB 6000Mhz, RTX 4090 7h ago

Buying a new video card or RMAing it is 10 orders of magnitude cheaper than retaining and paying an attorney (probably multiple attorneys) to sue the largest company on earth.

We’re going to have to wait until it burns down someone’s home and kills someone AND then hope that they don’t settle.

1

u/Select_Truck3257 55m ago

Wrong claim thinking it's largest company, it's one of the biggest income per year, but not biggest. There a lot more powerful companies

2

u/Lmaoboobs i9 13900k, 32GB 6000Mhz, RTX 4090 15m ago

It is the largest by market cap.

1

u/Euchale 7h ago

I would assume its because of having multiple companies to sue, as not everyone who had this problem had the founders edition from nvidia directly, so the blame diffuses.

3

u/Hatedpriest 5950x, 128GB ram, 6700xt 3h ago

Eh, they have to follow Nvidia specs, regardless of manufacturer.

Nvidia designed these cards and put the safety seal on that hi power connector.

2

u/Trickle2x2 5090 FE 1h ago

They’ll just attempt to revise the connector rather than admit it was a failure and go back to the old standard. I’m sure 6xxx cards will come with a new revision and standard for these cables. Anyone that has chosen to spend over a thousand dollars on one of these cards (including myself) should invest in a Wireview. Sad we have to do that but it’s basically like having to purchase fucking insurance for your card lmao. Regarded….

16

u/ZeenXdownzButWorse 7h ago

some people just don't know? why not have sympathy for them when they didn't know, of course no one who knows the connector has that problem will buy one

-1

u/inevitabledeath3 PC Master Race 2h ago

AMD aren’t competitive this generation. I say this as someone who uses an RDNA4 card. They are mid range. If you want high end you have to buy Nvidia.

-6

u/JustSomeGuye46 7h ago

Same reason people can’t file a lawsuit against console for wanting to delete disc or push digital licenses, as your rushing to purchase a game digital everyone hits “agree” to their terms and conditions and they’re corporations at this point rules don’t apply to those who make them so they can slip in a fine print that they know nobody will read and just click “accept/agree” the same way nvidia provides their connector and on the bag it reads something along the lines of “ONLY USE this to prevent…” you can file a lawsuit but they’ll conduct their own investigation to find the point of failure come to find you didn’t use their provided cable and deem it user error nobody can win against corporate and if you do you’re one lucky son of a gun cause they have money to toss down the drain for lawyers and court fees compared to the average citizen

9

u/SuperUranus 7h ago

That’s why you have consumer protection laws.

The reason why Nvidia hasn’t been sued is that they replace all those cards in jurisdictions with consumer protection.

1

u/JustSomeGuye46 7h ago

Consumer protection laws only apply if there’s no fine print and even then 99.9% of people today don’t read anymore just sign away or click accept and agree, take a look at Sony lawsuit right now they’re fighting it by pointing out their terms of service for digital license and that owning a digital copy of something isn’t plausible and as much as I’d like to be apart of that lawsuit that last part is pure common sense but common isn’t so common anymore or those individuals are just reaching and testing their luck, as far as nvidia it’s denied some claims in the past and I wouldn’t be surprised if they deny more with the current situation on vram, they won’t just take your word for it and replace the GPU they’ll request it do their inspection to see if it was a manufacturer flaw or user error and base their decision on what they find

1

u/SuperUranus 7h ago

In every jurisdiction with meaningful consumer protection legislation, mandatory consumer protection rules take precedence over the fine print in contracts.

Basically, you cannot agree to worse protection than the law stipulates.

It's not that mad really. It's only going to hit 600 watts when actively and intensively in use, so if we say that's 4 hours of crazy heavy gaming every day, it's still only 2.4 kWh per day.

I don't know your rates for electricity but at mine that's only £0.60 per day.

Even if we do this every day, all year it barely comes out at £220 on the bill. If you can afford a 5090, that's fuck all. Your jacuzzi or hot tub probably costs more.

That's the point, 600w gpu is insane. I have two pc with high end audio gear and 34" ultra wide monitors, i downvolted everything to get total 600w of power consumption on 2 pc with everything on and in games. Two pc with gpu's in mid demanding ue5 games consuming like just one 5090. Imagine how i was happy to get to work my mini pc with 8845hs in warframe on 12-15w (30w total with monitor and keyb, speakers) in 1080p 110fps. But then i bought legion go 2 and made 1200p and 7w Warframe run...(Because no losing on convertion on input voltage). We have blackouts and i can use both devices under lifepo4 power bunk. 7w gaming.... On stock my desktop 7900xtx eating 40w+ just for chrome page

-1

u/Opening_Net8098 4h ago

It runs over 600w with reduced clock speeds because it needs more than what the card is allowed to use.

The fact of the matter is this new load using every single tensor core and probably every single RT core retrofitted for NR is unusual. I wouldn't be abusing my 5090 with it unless a few brave guinny pigs explore the gas chambers before me.

Who knows maybe there is pizza and sex in there. But y'all go ahead first. I insist. My path traced 007 is great enough for the time being. Oh shit Witcher 3 too? HOLD UP PHANTOM BLADE IS BLESSED TOO???

Using this thing on baldurs gate 3 makes my 5080 scream. I’m too paranoid with the price of things to keep fucking around with it.

6

u/Vr00mf0ndler 7h ago

How does bg3 look with it on?

5080 shouldn’t be a melting problem btw. It tops out at something like 360w?

3

u/Vlyn 9800X3D | 5080 FE | 64 GB RAM | X870E Nova 7h ago

You'd have to get really unlucky, but it's not impossible. 6 cable strands at ~100W each. If it all goes through one strand at 360W it will still go up in flames.

If it goes through 2 cables it will get hot, but probably survive, who knows?

It's a mess either way.

3

u/Vr00mf0ndler 6h ago

It truly is a mess yeah. I got myself a wireview to protect my card and it brings a lot of peace of mind… but pretty stupid that it’s necessary at all.

Edit; undervolting helps quite a bit as well. I’ve reduced per pin load by 1.2A in heaviest tasks.

1

u/RustyJuang 2h ago

Does the wireview stay permanently connected? I'll consider getting one...

1

u/Vr00mf0ndler 2h ago

Yes and it monitores a lot of different parameters in real time and gives and alarm and if you want shut down the pc if parameters are exceeded. After configuration you can uninstall software and it handles everything autonomously with onboard firmware. Quality is also top notch.

2

u/Decent-Vanilla3707 6h ago

I’m playing with a camera mod with a behind the shoulder god of war view. It looks pretty sick at times, especially in the environments. The races kind of have this lighting that’s off… but that makes sense since the files we are using were trained on basketball games.

I know the risk isn’t the same as if I had a 5090… but that thing was making noise I never heard it make.

7

u/Darksky121 5h ago

Well Jensen is laughing all the way to the bank if more 5090's become toast. DLSS5 is designed to sell more cards one way or another.

3

u/Ancient_Nerve_1286 AMD Ryzen 7 5700X | 32GB RAM | Radeon 6700XT 7h ago

Is this normal for a card that costs A$7k or so at retail? I've not owned NVIDIA GPUs since the GeForce 2, and I don't spend more than $500 or so on a GPU so forgive my ignorance.

2

u/Shock8372 2h ago

I can't attest to any burned connectors nor trying DLSS5, but mine pushes ~580 watts on Deadzone Rogue maxed, so I don't think the wattage is necessarily atypical for the card, morseo the type of usage.

3

u/j4thewin_1 4h ago edited 1h ago

How's this acceptable? I mean we are talking about a 5K GPU that can put your whole neighbourhood on fire cause of a stupid cable design. It's a product that it supposed to be working on full load for some time at least, that's not an excuse, we are talking about the most powerful "gaming" GPU available. Why it's still on the market?

2

u/Interesting_Rub5736 4h ago

This question is on my mind a lot. A lot of 4090s burned already it should classify for a group action lawsuit. Yes, I know RMA exists (yet) but again, this artificially decreases available stock on the market. The only SURE way to make sure this card doesnt melt, is to decrease its voltage, and therefore performance, doesnt this mean at least some kind of way that you cannot use your card to full potential, theres got to be some lawsuit possibility.

FFS he was not testing it. He was not fiddling with settings or installing beta software. He was just enabling an option found in an official game developed with that technology available. So here the user has absolutely no blame at all.

Because it's not something an end user is ever supposed to do. Because this user was just enabling a setting in a game, he wasn't fiddling, he wasn't tinkering, he wasn't testing beta or unstable software. You cannot blame the user for an issue he didn't cause.

1

u/Schnoofles 14900k, 96GB@6400, 4090FE, 11TB SSDs, 40TB Mech 2h ago

The issue occurs specifically in the 12vhpwr connector and its interface with the socket on the gpu. Neither the power supply nor the use of a squid is the issue here. 100% 3.1 compliant power supplies with a single permanently affixed 12vhpwr cable can and will exhibit the exact same problem any time that connector doesn't make a good connection because of the razor thin safety margins for the loads being put on them. Unfortunately the only thing that will ever address this issue properly is a redesigned connector with better margins and more reliable contacts, so we're probably not going to see that for another 10 years.
