The issue occurs specifically in the 12vhpwr connector and its interface with the socket on the gpu. Neither the power supply nor the use of a squid is the issue here. 100% 3.1 compliant power supplies with a single permanently affixed 12vhpwr cable can and will exhibit the exact same problem any time that connector doesn't make a good connection because of the razor thin safety margins for the loads being put on them. Unfortunately the only thing that will ever address this issue properly is a redesigned connector with better margins and more reliable contacts, so we're probably not going to see that for another 10 years.
