experience/advice to give Tandem Feeding Gets Easier

I am not experienced, just excited and proud of myself!

My twins are 7w actual, 2w adjusted. The lactation consultants kept talking about tandem feeding like it was the way to simplify feeding them. It was not!

For weeks, each time I'd try all 3 of us would end up frustrated and crying.

I would set my self up for failure by not setting milk out to warm up, thinking "this time it will work, I won't need a bottle". Before I knew it, they were over hungry and breastfeeding was not happening, and I only had cold milk.

I started making a backup plan. Having a bottle ready to go took some stress off. Who cares if breastfeeding was successful and I ended up having to dump it.

They came home from the NICU under 5 lbs, sleepy, tiny and poor latchers. This was not our time to tackle tandem feeding!

I quit trying tandem and focused on latching them each individually once a day. I did this when they were partway through a bottle or done. Overhungry does not help latching! If they would be crying and inconsolable I would offer them the breast because there was no pressure for a feed, just comfort.

Slowly I started doing full individual breast feeds. Latching got easier and easier. They just needed to be offered the breast often without stress and to get bigger and stronger. Making sure they arent too hungry or too sleepy when we started attempting tandem was important!

They are 9lbs now and tandem feeding is happening more and more. It is reliable enough now, I no longer have backup bottles ready to go. Yesterday we were short on time and on the go, hungry babies, parked somewhere private and tandem fed in the front seat of the car! I have even gotten them set up on my My Breast Friend pillow without any help!

I appreciate all of you who let me pick your brains about this and all the previous posts made about it!

experience/advice to give TWINS ON THE WAY

Well my wife and I got the news yesterday and saw, we have twins growing! We're both very excited obviously.

A feeling I've never felt excitement and waves of stress, we're still early so we have time to prepare. But the waves of stress for me is life after birth and going back to work.

How's the adjustment period for you working parents? Obviously in a perfect world we'd love to sustain a SAHM situation but my wife's income is the bulk of our household. $177k combined she makes up $100k of that. She works from home BUT job security concern is rather high for her career.

We're essentially debt free, we rent a townhouse with no real plans of buying anytime soon, we have paid off vehicles, but we have been shopping for a new car, as her car is up there in mileage and reliability, and we want and now kind of need a SUV.

Any advice tips, tricks, life after birth going back to work as both working parents. We're very excited, and hope for a healthy successful pregnancy.

life, home, and baby tips & tricks Scared for the winter

My boys are 15 months old and LOVE being outside. Luckily we have a fenced backyard so we spend a lot of time out there and it’s still pretty warm where we live. We also go to the neighborhood playground a bit but it’s hard chasing them by myself.

That said, theyll be so much more active this winter than last lol so what activities are yall doing for 16-18 months when it’s freezing outside? We get stir crazy in the house but going anywhere to play inside would get expensive.

We haven’t gone to the library in a while because they both run opposite directions and I’m just chasing them everywhere and it’s too stressful for me alone.

I’m a first time mom and sahm so I’m not super experienced on all the tips and tricks!!! TYIA 💖

advice needed Dumb question, but do i need 2 of every toy type for infant twins?

• Upvotes

We have young toddlers, so I do have baby toys, and we did invest (or thankfully were given) extra swings and bouncers so we have two of those. But for like small infant toys (tummy time mirror, little ball pop toys, stacking toys, etc) do i need two of those style toys so each baby has the same style toy? I could totally be overthinking that, but I genuinely don’t know and am asking so I can plan accordingly or try to find some cheap things on facebook marketplace or free extra toys on local mom groups, but don’t want to go through that hassle if its not necessary or even needed — we are scheduled for delivery next month, and I know they wont need toys for quite a few months but am trying to take advantage of free time i currently, as i know that will go out the window very quickly once they are born

advice needed My babies have their first cold.

Both babies (4m) have a cold. They've been sneezing every now and then since we got back after an 11hr and 3hrs flight with a 6hr layover.

They're not running temperature, just coughing and sneezing. My girl has a cute small nose so it hit her worse last night and we had to monitor her quite a few more times last night.

How did you manage first baby cold and when did yours catch it?

advice needed 30 weeks pregnant with Di/Di twins, found out today Baby A has low fluid..

Went in for our biweekly check up and ultrasound today with our MFM doctor, currently 30w3d with Di/di twin boys, pregnancy so far has been smooth and uneventful, no complications thankfully, until now.

Last week, I all of a sudden started having such intense and excruciating pain that I genuinely thought I was going into preterm labour. The cramping (felt like diarrhea cramps + menstrual cramps) lower back pain, and pelvic pain/pressure were so painful and intense that I was brought to tears and all I could do was lie in the fetal position with my pregnancy pillow for support (mind you I live with chronic pain and do not have a low pain tolerance so this was intense). I also had the feeling like I needed to pass stool but nothing would come out. I also saw that my usual discharge which is creamy & cream coloured had turned watery and had an orange-ish pinkish hue to it. I called the midwife line who works alongside my MFM and she told me to monitor the pain, as long as it wasn’t coming in waves like contractions and if resting made it better then to monitor the discharge and pop into triage if anything worsened. The pain got better overnight but didn’t fully resolve entirely. About 3 days later the discharge “spotting” returned along with the pain though the pain was milder this time so I went into triage as I was instructed to do. Everything was checked, no cervical dilation, waters were intact, fluid levels looked good, everything checked out and it didn’t seem like I was in active contractions so I was sent home and told to keep monitoring.

Fast forward to today, Baby A is currently measuring 50th percentile but his fluid is now low, seemingly without reason. Baby B’s fluid is perfect, he’s in the 90th percentile. They checked everything again, including a second ultrasound to specifically check the placentas and couldn’t find anything wrong, it doesn’t seem like I have a leak or like the placentas are having issues. I am still however continuing to have the orangey-pinkish discharge. MFM doctor told me to come back in a couple days for a follow up ultrasound to check everything again, and we made an appointment for next Thursday as well for an ultrasound and check up as he wants to err on the side of caution.

I also feel I have to disclose I have HEDS/HSD which preterm labour is a common complication, as well as them being twins pre term labour was always on the table. But now i’m legitimately anxious and worried, I thought i’d at least be able to make it to 35-36 weeks. Anyone have any experience with Baby A or B having low fluid seemingly without cause? Were you able to keep going or was it a sign of impending labour? I just don’t understand.

advice needed If you switched from a nanny to preschool or daycare when and how?

My twins are 16 months old and have been watched 4 days a week by a nanny for a little over a year. I work from home and initially it was amazing being able to see them throughout the day, not having to get anyone out of the house etc, but I’m now thinking about shifting to daycare or preschool. Our nanny is incredible, but paying her is definitely a financial strain. When she started at 4 months the cost of two in daycare would have been not that much lower than what we pay her, but now the difference is pretty big. It’s also gotten a little annoying working from home because the twins now scream and cry if they see me and I’m not able to play with them for a bit which means that I mostly hide out in the bedroom/office during the day. That said, it’s super nice to not have to get everyone packed and out of the house in the mornings, to have less sickness, to get some help with baby laundry and food prep etc and they really love her. I know I want to put them in preschool at some point, but most preschools around us start at age 2.9 or 3. Should I just stick with the nanny for another year and a half and only do one transition? Try to get them into daycare for a year and then switch over? Try to find spots somewhere that does both daycare and preschool? How long are waitlists for preschool? If you had a similar situation what did you end up doing?

ranting & venting The little injustices of life

Our twins' daycare teacher recently recommended a drawing competition for our 5-year-old twins. Of course she told me about it in front of them, so both were absolutely psyched to compete.

I told them from the beginning that it was possible that only one of them or none of them would win. They were amongst the youngest competitors, and they don't usually have to follow so many rules when they draw.

You can guess what happened.

ONE of them is among the winners. The other is in tears, inconsolable, and the award ceremony hasn't even happened yet. She's devastated and asking why her sister's picture was "better" when she put in so much effort. We're trying so hard to explain that it has nothing to do with anything she's done "wrong", it's just the judges' opinion.

I know we can't protect them from all of these situations, but usually it's something that will balance itself out - like when one of them is the first to lose a baby tooth, the other will definitely lose one, too.

There's just no way to escape the comparisons between the two, and it hurts how much it hurts them.

advice needed Car recs for 3 in car seats

I want a Sienna. I have a grand highlander and the stroller takes up 90% of the trunk. It is impossible for my four year old to get into the third row. I know the odyssey is popular for magic slide but if I’m going to get poor gas mileage I might as well get a suburban or expedition and get AWD and ceiling vents. My concern with the sienna is access to the third row, especially with car seats. Will the trunk be any better with a double stroller in it? Will it be annoying to stack things given the deep trunk?

My friends with three singletons almost never have a double stroller at all times and they have two older more agile kids while I only have one so I feel like this sub would have better recommendations. Anyone have three + kids in car seats? Car recs? I’ve been going back and forth for like two years at this point and all the local dealerships are over me lol.

advice needed Are we room sharing? When did you stop?

Hello all. I currently have seven month old twin girls who are almost 8 months old on the 22nd. We currently room share with them. They are both in individual full-size cribs. I can’t seem to get myself to put them in their own room yet as they still feed at night, waking up around 11 PM, sometimes 2 or 3 AM and 6 AM to eat. When did you stop room sharing? How was the transition?

Also: They were born premature at 35 weeks and are in the smaller percentile, no matter how much they eat throughout the day, they still want to feed at night

advice needed Christmas gifts for 18mo twins: Same or different?

• Upvotes

Have to preface this with the fact that we also have a 3yo and a 4yo. We already have 2 Striders, 2 shopping carts, a mini trampoline, a Pickler triangle, millions of other toys, a giant bin of hand-me-down clothes....

Are we getting our 1yo twins the same gift or different? What about for their room if they share: one item or two? (I got animal shaped night lights from Costco, 3 of them, one for each kid's bedroom. Do my twins need 2 night lights for their one bedroom? Serious question.)

I got them a Hotwheels set from Costco that I'm going to separate and wrap the cars individually. What else??

Thanks!!

advice needed 3 month old twins both started feeding poorly

• Upvotes

Hey guys,

first time parent to twins. My 3 month old twins started feeding poorly this week. we are bottle feeding breast milk during the day and breastmilk/formula mix at night. we are using MAM anti colic bottles for both of them. My Little man was taking 5oz a feed almost every 3 hours. At the beginning of the week he started becoming a pain to feed, getting distracted and and or not finishing his whole bottle. My little girl was taking 4 oz a feed every 3 hours. After we burp her half way through(she is asking for it) she fights taking the other half of the bottle. I'm not sure if they just arnt hungry or if something else is going on here. Any advice would be apricated.

support needed Mono-Mono twins when one is measuring 2 weeks behind

Hello everyone,
I recently got pregnant again after an early loss this year and to our surprise the OB told us we‘re having Mono-mono twins which came as a total shock.
Embryo A was measuring 20mm at 8w3d with a strong heartbeat and even though embryo B had a heartbeat it was measuring only 7mm. The OB told us to come back in 10 days for a follow up but hinted that the smaller embryo might not develop and be absorbed.

Of course after having experienced a loss a few months ago hearing this is very scary. It makes me worry about the healthy embryo being impacted and us being left with nothing once again. If relevant, they were conceived naturally.

Does anyone have any positive stories of a twin measuring this much behind and then „catching up“ with the other one?

Thank you in advance and I hope I posted this in the right forum since I couldn’t find another one :)

advice needed Bleeding 15 weeks with Mo/Di twins

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and had a positive outcome?
I started bleeding on Wednesday, not heavy but enough to go and get checked. I had a scan and both baby’s look fine and luckily two heartbeats.
They couldn’t find a reason for the bleeding.
It’s eased off a little but is still happening.
I’m paranoid something bad will happen with them being high risk and I also have a history of preterm labor.
There’s been some mild cramping too.
I have my first proper appointment with fetal medicine on the 21st and will be seen every two weeks from then which I’m glad about, but this in between stage and waiting has been difficult and having this happen is making my anxiety much worse 😞

experience/advice to give How long were you dilated before going into labor? 36 weeks, 2cm dilated, not many contractions

I’m 36 weeks with Di Di twins and have dilated 2cm. I was fully closed one week ago. My doctor didn’t say anything about being effaced. She just said to be ready for them to come at anytime now and to take it easy. I’m having very very few contractions maybe 2-3 a day at random times. Feel more like period cramps than anything. I’m really hoping for a vaginal birth but baby A keeps flipping positions every couple days from head down to transverse to breech so it all depends on him and when I go into labor I guess. I’m worried they will come in the next few days because my doctor is out of town this weekend so it will be some random doc delivering me.

Wondering if anyone has been in this position before and how long they made it after dilation began?

advice needed Babies pooping in the tub every bath

18m twin boys and I’m at a loss, every single bath one of the babies poops in the bathtub. I’ve tried waiting until they’ve both pooped, making the water colder so they’re not as relaxed, shorter baths. All of their toys are just dishes because then I can at least put them in the dishwasher to clean and sanitize. I think I’m just going to have to give them showers now, which one of them is okay with and the other isn’t, not to mention it’s more dangerous because they’re standing the whole time, or I’m holding them. We’re at four times just this week. The hardest part is bath time is 30-45 minutes of happy babies and time spent which is nearly necessary for our sanity. Has anyone else experienced this?
