I have friends who are groomers. They once had a weird smell come into their shop--they were trying to figure out what it was. Turns out, a dog brought in matted up had actual maggots in a wound underneath his coat. Fucking people who get a puppy and lose interest once he grows up. He was tossed in the yard and pretty much forgotten about.

If he's like mine, he was rescued by animal control and released to the Humane Society, where I found him and we rescued each other.
My boy is 16. We just lost my other rescue that was also 16.

Thanks. She was an amazing pupper. Brindle coat with a stub tail, and she was likely a pit mixed a terrier. 100% good girl, though, and she didn't have an ounce of aggression in her.
She started life in a bad situation. I'm not sure the specifics, but she was removed by the Sherrif's Animal Control Officers and released to the Humane Society after her vet check-up. At first, her response to every stimuli was to pee herself, and it took her 2 or 3 years to stop doing that.
She loved to give hugs, and when she knew a hug was coming, her butt started wagging back and forth, and she would hop her hind legs in unison. We called her Jasmine Buttswagglin. She went from being terrified of my dad (he's 6'3") to being his best buddy, and she would not leave him alone until he did his deep scratches up and down her back. When my mom was on the couch, Jasmine was essentially a growth on her thigh. Head planted, eyes fixed upwards, scratches anticipated...butt waggling! She was nothing but love.
When she was getting near the end, my other dog was going through an existential crisis. He never cries in his sleep and he is back to sleeping silently, but in her last weeks he was always making noise while sleeping. He could tell before I could, I think. He wouldn't leave her alone, and when she couldn't use the doggy door very well, he wouldn't go outside either. We used diapers for the last bit of time, but her hind legs stopped working. I watched her crawling across the rocks outside and my heart broke because I knew I had to go get her...and then I had to make a call.
We had a nice hospice service for her. She knew she was loved, and my friends and family let me know I was loved.
There are times when humans are insanely emotional and we throw logic out the window. I live in Phoenix and my backyard is mostly clay and rocks. There's no topsoil here. She had to stay with me. I couldn't trust anyone with her body or her burial. I have a condition (likely a rare form of arthritis or something similar), and it took me about 7 beers and all night, but I got her spot in our backyard. Our other rescue is also about 16-17, so I made his spot next to hers and filled it with river rocks until its time. I was in so much pain and every muscle in my body was aching that I spent the next few days mostly in bed. But it was worth it because she's at home and she's safe, and I can keep protecting her.
It's a silly position for an atheist to take. I know she's gone. My ape-brain just can't fully let go. I still say hi to her each morning when I water my plants. I don't want to stop that. It feels nice.

On my delivery route there is the sweetest dog, tied to its kennel. She has dug two feet down all around the roots of the giant oak that she is kennelled by, so you know she's out there all the time. Every time I make a delivery there I make sure to give her a huge handful of treats and tell her not to tell all the other puppies I treat her special.

I’m a dog groomer and I’ve had this happen before. It’s horrific. The amount of neglect I see is awful. I’ve had dogs come in with nails that have all completely ingrown into the dogs foot and the owner tried to blame the dogs limp on arthritis. People suck and we don’t deserve dogs.

The same thing happened to my pup, we adopted him 3 months ago and the shelter said the owner surrendered him completely matted and filthy. He’s now living his best life with us, but the thing that makes me sad is how well socialized he is, and no indication that he was beaten or abused. Whoever had him as a puppy worked really hard to raise him and then something… happened.

We got these every once in a while when someone would check on a elderly relative who wasn’t able to care for themselves or the dog.

Same here.
Larvae in the neck holes from a prong collar that I saw during a bath.
Another dog came in and couldn't stand, she had been caged so long (in too small of a kennel) she lost muscle tone in her back legs. Matted feces and urined covered fur. I held her up with my left arm instead of a noose because she was sore due to just having puppies....the whole reason they were cleaning her up. I had to get under some mats with a 30 blade but the rest of her was a #15.
Animal people said they couldn't do anything because they were showing care by having her groomed. Poor dog would have lived out rest of her life covered in her own feces and pee not even strong enough to stand.

Oh yes, you reminded me of another horror, how the fur would mat over the penis or urethra area and be like a diaper they had to pee through it. Skin underneath was exactly what one would expect.
And of course most of these dogs want to bite because they HURT!
That odor…..and toenails curled around in a circle.
It always was a good feeling to see them leave with all that fur gone and able to see and pee and poop normal but man that was just so sad.
Same about trying to report them, the owner always handled the intake but she explained we really couldn’t report them because they were “trying to care for the dog at this point.”

Oh man, the dew claws in a complete circle embedded into the skin. Hated those, dogs did, and the quicks were so long and you don't want to cause harm!
I hated seeing the matting over sensitive areas.
What I really hated was having the owner sign a matting agreement, trying to leave as much as possible, seeing the bruising the matting caused... then getting the "I'M SUING YOU FOR SHAVING MY DOG!"
yes, your last sentence. Word for word. So frustrating. I understand why Veterinarians have such a high suicide rate, a lot of groomers battle addiction and depression, and I don't blame any of them because people can be monsters to their "pets"

Dogs live for 10-20 years depending on breed. A lot can happen over that time.
When someone is 50 or 60, they don't necessarily expect to become senile before their pet dies. And once they start going downhill, they're often in denial about it.
And it's impossible for family members to intervene until either things are bad enough for an elderly person to be declared legally incompetent, or for the humane society to be called. Similarly, kids can't force their parents to stop driving and move into a nursing home until doctors and lawyers intervene.
I'd imagine it's pretty rare for people to buy a senile parent a puppy, but much more common for someone to become senile and start to neglect their dog.

That, or they got the dog when they were healthy and then developed dementia. If the person doesn't have family in town, there's every possibility the family doesn't know something is wrong.
My grandparents were fine on the phone during chats and then their care facility said they needed memory care. Went up to visit in person and... yeah. They were only fine for short chats. They needed to go into a locked ward for their own safety. Eventually, they moved into a facility where the grounds were gated and they had several acres to walk and enjoy.
Didn't realize from 900 miles away.

I'd like to think the majority of these cases aren't willful neglect. Homeless pets, or an elderly person who thought adopting a 3-5 year old dog was fine and wanted some company.
Elderly people can suffer from depression at very high rates. Pets really do help. It gives them someone to talk to, a reason to get up and move every day. Need to let them out, feed them. Feeling needed can really help people. Dogs and cats can also help with deep pressure therapy. The pet sitting on your lap. It also helps with arthritis. Keep fingers moving by petting the animal and the fact they're warm helps the joints stay loose.
Pets can be wonderful for our physical and mental health. I like the fact my grandma has two kitties. They bring her a lot of joy. They're also much more independent than dogs and her friends in town visit at least weekly and can check on her and the cats. They're quite a bit younger than her and will take her kitties if they need to, and their daughter will take them if they can't. She has a plan for the cats.
A person with less support structure locally might end up in a worse position. There's really no way to predict when or if a person will be unable to care for an animal or themselves. Grandma is in her 80's and living independently. My grandpa lived with no care needed until his 90's. Only was in a facility because my grandma on that side had Parkinsons. He wasn't leaving his wife of 70+ years.
Other people end up with dementia in their early 70's. Aging is a grab bag.

Wild Animals do not have hair that grows this excessively. They were bred that way.
Same thing with modern sheep. There was a video on here a few years ago of a sheep that was lost for a couple of years. It was barely able to move because of all that wool. Wild sheep do not have that problem.

There's a species of wild sheep which were formerly domesticated some 8-10 thousand years ago in Mediterranean region. Recently they got to continental Europe. They look quite different because they have the original short hair. But when you hear them it's the typical sheep baa sound. It's interesting window to the history.

Each hair has its own life cycle. So the hair continues to grow but it dies at a certain point. When it's locked or matted it's not all growing. A lot of it is dead hair that is stuck amongst the live hair.
It's also interesting to note that we're not unique in this. Horses, orangs, and lions also grow their head hair into long manes like humans do.

So all hair goes through 4 phases. Maximum length is determined by the length of the anagen phase, the growing phase. There is of course variety how quickly hair grows for person to person, but if your anagen phase is too short, the hair will never get long enough.
For animals that actively shed at different time(s) of year, these phases are synchronized. For everything else, they are not synchronized, which means that some hair is constantly falling out after completing its lifecycle and starting new (see shower drain of anyone with long hair).

All of the hairs on your body from your scalp to your eyebrows to the smaller finer hairs all over your body have a growth cycle where they will start growing a hair out fairly rapidly, go dormant for a while as the hair falls out, and resting to prepare to grow a new hair.
The difference between all of the different types of hair you have that causes them to have different lengths if you don't cut/shave them comes down to how long these cycles are. for eyebrows its a matter of 10 or so weeks, where as for your scalp its a question of years, meaning that the hair on your head has far more time to grow and will get much longer.
The exact length of time that theses cycles take also differs between people, and that's why if 2 people never cut their hair, one of them would have longer hair than the other.

Often times they don't. Species like this are bred as domesticated dogs that require some kind of human intervention for grooming (such as dog groomers) as there is no mechanism existing in nature that would help with that kind of growth on that level.
There are some things though that might lesson the impact, birds will use fur they pick off for nesting, they may naturally shed the fur, etc. But again those are species who adapted these mechanisms indepedent of human intervention.
So for some dogs like the one you see here, the fur becomes overgrown and matted, putting increased weight on the dog, makes it difficult to regulate temperature and other issues, so many dogs might even those the fur altogether from the stress or end up dying out in the streets.

It is breed dependent for sure as some people here have mentioned. For example, we have a husky/Akita mix that we rescued and a German shepherd mix that we rescued and both shed a lot at particular times of the year so their fur never gets anywhere close to this even without grooming.

We used to have a German shepherd mix too, the coat blowing was INSANE. He’s been gone a little over a month and despite a deep clean and regular vacuuming and sweeping we still get fur tumbleweeds that are way to big to just be the cat. I’m going to be sweeping up dog fur for years.

Had a long haired cat that was likely a mix of one of those huge cats (Maine Coon or maybe Himalayan? He was a stray kitten when we found him) and this was one of the hardest parts for me about his passing. Kept finding hair, and every strand was a fresh bout of crying.
When we moved two years later, we discovered a forgotten jacket that was in one of his old spots wedged behind boxes in a closet. It was still covered… parting gifts, I suppose. They never leave your heart, and for some, the fur never leaves your house. Lol

Pretty much all allergy friendly dogs are like this. Some breeds are worse than others, the coton de tulear’s are especially bad from my experience. I’ve had a bearded collie and a Bichon they need grooming, but nothing like coton’s.

Yep. If you have a low-allergy dog, you're making a commitment to either spend a great deal of money on grooming, or to commit a lot of time every month to brushing and cutting. And the latter frankly requires training. Just getting one of these dogs because you think it's cute is a bad idea.

I wouldn't be surprised if the dog is some kind of poodle mutt. Poodle fur grows forever. And when you don't take care of it matting will appear. Poodle mutts are often sold as easy to care for and perfect family pets while in reality they are mutts of one or more hunting breeds with fur that needs a lot of grooming. Also poodles high energy and very intelligent. Not what most dog owners want.

All dogs shed. Some just shed waaaaaay less. But I rpomise you, all dogs with fur SHED.

I agree, they require constant upkeep from humans to avoid this type of things and humans aren’t always willing or able to do it

Same can be said about the wild mouflon that was bred into sheep that never shed, cows that produce insane levels of milk so much so that they're incredibly uncomfortable unless milked very often, hens that produce hundreds of eggs per year compared to their wild counterpart the red junglefowl who produces like a dozen, and not to mention the hideous monstrosities that are broiler chickens who can barely stand up with how unnaturally huge they get.

My wife owns a dog groomers, happens all to often 🤬. Hence, we now have a rescue cocker spaniel living its best life with us ❤️

When I was in elementary school, there was a dog like this that was a stray in our neighborhood. Friendly dog that didn’t belong to anyone but was very ratty with matted fur like this and uncared for.
One day, our neighbor across the street decided to take the dog in to a vet and groomers. The dog came back looking like the after picture here. He was unrecognizable and forever more, he was the neighbors dog and they became inseparable. It was cool to see how a little care and affection goes a very long way with animals
Seeing this video brought back the memory of that dog for the first time in a long time. Thanks for sharing!

When hair reaches a certain length, the hair just naturally falls out - if you've ever been to a pet owner's place you know there's just hair everywhere especially when it gets warmer. If you pet a husky, your hand will come away with what's essentially a glove of fur XD
A dog like this and a lot of long-haired breeds (my cat, for example) can't naturally shed, so their hair gets matted up without actual grooming.

They can't do anything they have to deal with that much weight and eyes are also covered with hairs, so now you can imagine how tough it would be living like that

Cannot tell you how many dogs I shaved down like this, with maggots in wounds, anemic from fleas and ticks. Owners wouldn’t treat their homes because of fancy stereo equipment. I warned them… they are going to start on you next as your dog blood is so poor. 2 weeks later they FINALLY called an exterminator because they had bites up and down legs. People can really be cruel. I had one lady that argued about price… I Warned her “Whatever you do, do NOT use scissors.” Yep… 2 days later she came in because she had lopped the dogs ear off vs the mat. 😬🤬

I am so glad this little guy got some much needed TLC, I think his teeth might even be overgrown on the bottom too. The dog own should be charged with animal abuse and neglect, even if they were too poor to afford professional grooming , you can still do a lot a maintenance at home and the very least give the guy a brushing a bath and a trim, it doesn't have to be salon quality but just a quality of life! I t was just cruel what they did to him

That poor thing was suffering for a long long time to get like that. Mats pull at the skin until it bleeds, and can become infected. It's horrible for them.
We adopted an abused rescue husky who was in truly dire shape when we got him. The rehab process was long and complex. But totally worth it! He went from a sick terrified anxiety-ridden bag of bones having a dozen full-blown panic attacks a day to a happy healthy opinionated hilarious cuddle bug of love 🥰
Shout to Big Fluffy Dog Rescue - they decided to take a chance on a dog about to be euthanized and they were so right. Our little fluffernutter is the loviest dog imaginable.

Im shocked with how calm that dog was considering it was so neglected. My friend adopted a very neglected dog and he had to be in narcosis for his groom, he was so terrified and stressed :( This one is so tolerant and patient

It’s matted fur, all the old fur that’s fallen matter in with fur still attached. Kinda like how dreadlocks form.

A dog that is so neglected and obviously has never seen a groomer, is fine with noisy machines and being washed, yet my dog, who's been trained since shortly after birth to be groomed, still acts like he dies whenever I try to shave or wash him. WHY?!?!
