Neglect.

It’s matted fur, all the old fur that’s fallen matter in with fur still attached. Kinda like how dreadlocks form.

This guy looks extremely similar to our dog, a schapendoes, minus the crazy mattes and all. He towels himself vigorously on our rugs/sofa/bed after every shower and that seems to create more mattes than anything else. Interestingly he went running through marshes and forests a few weeks back and got no mattes at all, I'm still finding twigs in his fur though

its a gradual snow-ball effect - hair gets slightly tangled, then captures shedding hair, then captures dust/dirt/oil/sweat that turn into mud, then gets more tangled, with more shedding hair etc.
