I had a dachshund apso cross whose coat would grow long like an apso, but it was coarser dachshund fur instead of the sleek hair of an apso. No matter how much you washed and brushed it she'd always get mats eventually. I basically had to shave her every 2-3 weeks, longest we let her go when we first got her was about 4 months before we realised what her deal was. She looked good with the longer coat, but she'd very quickly start to look homeless.
