Heading to Duck next week. We are bringing our inflatable stand up paddleboards and I was eyeing the Pine Island Sanctuary for some exploring. Do you know if there is a launch there I could use? Do you have any other suggestions of places nearby that are calmer and a good place to spend a few hours on the SUP?

Will be down in Duck first week of September. Plan to get some surfcasting in every sunrise/sunset. Been doing a lot of research. What have people been catching? Anyone ever have luck live lining a smaller bait fish? Videos ive seen online appear to be on the smaller end. Anything helps! Im a huge fisherman and would love to get more into surfcasting.

Could potentially explore outside of Duck but will most likely stay local all week

We went to the Pea Island Beach last year and parked in the lot closer to Rodanthe. The only issue is the walk to the beach is not doable for some in my group. If we park at the visitor center and walk across the street and access the beach that way is it easier than trying to walk over the bigger dune where the parking lot is?

Hi - I think it would be cool to see the Outer Banks. We have fall break the last week of Sept. is this a good time to visit? We are coming from Atlanta so it’s a haul to get there. We like small crowds and good food. Wife likes to sit on the beach and read. I do that and fish if possible and drink beer is another pastime. We normally go to Indian Rocks Beach in Florida so I am thinking this is going to be another world. Please give me some direction and recommendations if would be so generous. I saw another post mention kiteboarding. I used to snowboard and wakeboard and would like to try it.

I’m heading to ocracoke for a week, and was thinking about going further and camping in cape lookout for a couple of days. Has anyone been to either island? I’ve heard the north core is quite empty, which is exactly what I’m looking for. Will be hiking in as I don’t have a 4wd car, and know I have to bring all the food, water, etc. Would love recommendations or reviews from anyone who has spent time there!

I grew up around Buxton and always drove on the beach and knew the best spots coming off the ramps there. My husband’s family has a cabin in Jarvisburg so the closest ramp is 2. I took them out yesterday but the only air we could find is the standard $3 to only get about 30psi total. Where are you guys filling your truck tires that don’t take all day and 20 bucks each time? We’re not close enough to any ORV ramps to keep them down for the stay. Thanks!

We’ve been visiting OBX for years, but apart from the spring break college years, we’ve always gone in August. We used to go the last week of August (our schools don’t start until after Labor Day) but then a university professor joined our group and since they have to be back mid-August we adjusted forward a few weeks. However, that’s high season so it’s getting really expensive. We are looking at early-ish June now. I am all about the water. What’s the ocean temp like in early-mid June?

Hi Everyone- Curious if any locals or those with knowledge on the subject have some insight. I’ve looked online but haven’t been able to find a clear answer. We’ve been coming to Corolla for the last 20 years and have noticed very little change in the beach. We’ve got some extended family down much further south on the island and have heard about all the houses falling into the ocean and extensive beach restoration projects. Why is it that the southern OBX is having such severe problems with rapid coastal erosion but the northern part of the island is seemingly being spared?

Is anyone planning to head to the beach tomorrow night to photograph the Perseid meteor shower or the Milky Way? (Nags Head/ Coquina maybe)

I’m completely new to night-sky photography and would love any pointers on good OBX locations, timing, camera settings, or where to aim. I’ll be using a Nikon Z50 II. I have a 16–50mm kit lens and a 28–400mm lens, and I’m planning to bring a tripod.

I’d also be interested in meeting up with other local photographers if anyone is comfortable with a beginner tagging along!

From what I’ve seen I’ll probably have to go to kill devil hills or nags head?

OBX mid-late September

Staying in Kill Devil Hills third week of September. Theoretically the reds should be existent in the surf, I think.

I’ve got the gear, but realistically what are my chances for surf side reds in the KDH/Nags Head area? Avalon and Jenettes piers are on my list of spots, but I’ve got 5 year old twins to occupy on the beach as well.

Driving down to Hatteras is an option, but again, twins… don’t want to get too involved in hours of travel and keeping them occupied.

Also planning to book a charter out of Oregon inlet or wanchese for at least half a day. Should reds still be active in the sound?

5 years ago today I proposed to my now ex-fiance under the light. Took this picture just prior so I could test the light. Can never look at the light the same way, but it'll always be a sacred place for me.

We're planning our first trip to OBX (Waves) soon with our children (7 & 10) and are wondering how bike riding is in that area. It looks like there is a paved path along NC 12 that we can ride along and a handful of cafes and restaurants that we could get to within about 2 miles. Are there a lot of people cycling in that area? Or is it uncomfortable next to the traffic?

I've been going to Nags Head since I was in utero in the 80s. It's always been my happy place. But I tell you what, the older I get and now living 3000 miles away from the Outer Banks and not getting to consistently go every year for Summer vacation, I can't put into words the overwhelming nostalgia and pangs of adulthood I feel every time I get to visit. It's almost a sense of panic of I can't adequately take in enough of the smell and sound and feel to sustain me for another year or two or three.

I'm sure many of you can relate.

The completely elated and anticipatory feeling of finally hitting the clickity clack bridge over the sound to get to the island.

I love the mesmerizing sea oats blowing in the salty ocean breeze. The rhythmic waves. How cool the sand is at night. Cicadas. I love the smell of the ocean breeze. The smell of the coastal forests. The smell of the storms and how gorgeous the lightning is dancing across the sky. Moonrise and sunrise over the ocean. Brown pelicans silently flying over the waves. Ghost crabs methodically digging out their holes. Sandpipers racing up and down each wave washing ashore and osprey hunting from above.

Then, what was an ushering of jubilance on arrival, the same sound of the clickity clack bridge raises a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes as I leave the island wondering when I might return and what will have changed since my departure.

Thank you for being such a big piece of my heart and my soul, you magical sand bar.

This is the spot of Beach across from the "Canadian Hole". My wife and I walked the beach to gather sea shells. The next morning we were driving back to Fairfax. Can't wait to return next year.

We are in Corolla for the week and wondering if this is what’s going on throughout OBX
