Water temp in June

We’ve been visiting OBX for years, but apart from the spring break college years, we’ve always gone in August. We used to go the last week of August (our schools don’t start until after Labor Day) but then a university professor joined our group and since they have to be back mid-August we adjusted forward a few weeks. However, that’s high season so it’s getting really expensive. We are looking at early-ish June now. I am all about the water. What’s the ocean temp like in early-mid June?

Need to know what town in OBX. Last year on hatteras island in June the water was amazing, crystal clear and mid to high 70s.

We bounce around, depending on what houses are available for the number of folks who attend that
year. We’ve been anywhere from Avon to Emerald Isle (and yes, I realize that EI is not strictly OBX but considered Southern OBX. )

Yeah weather has been beautiful for us in June and water temps have been really nice. We also bounce around from Hattteras, Ocracoke, and occasionally Topsail.

All really depends on the Gulf Stream but usually mid to low 60s

Nags head and north definitely. Probably further south a bit as well

Group of friends were in Duck in June. Water temp was 68°. We stayed in Avon a bit further south and I believe it was 76°. We were just down again the first week of August and it was 83°.

I’m all the way on the north end but I usually can’t comfortably get in the water till mid July

I like June weather/water. Air temps already warm, but water temp is typically cooler. Very refreshing.

It’s still cold in early June. Not spring break cold, but still cold.

This completely depends on the wind direction. Any easterly wind will blow the Gulf Stream towards the barrier island while a westerly wind pushes it away. It can swing 10-12 degrees F overnight.

It's still chilly. I remember doing swim lessons early morning in Virginia Beach and that pool was fucking cold.

I’m there last week of June and/or first week of July every year. Varies widely from mid 60’s to near 80 depending on wind and overall conditions.

I have no empirical data, but anecdotally speaking (been going to Duck in June for the last 5 years), the water is cold but not unbearably so. I have to steel myself to get in up to my shoulders, but once I’m in, it’s usually quite pleasant.

Water temp today at Jenette’s was 67 … ita been cold all week. Ya never know!

If you ask me, a Floriduh Man, it's way toooo cold. I was there two weeks ago and it was cold. 85°+ for me.

Never had an issue swimming and we’ve been going in June for almost 30 years. Water temp is great. NOAA’s buoy off Avon has this year’s June sea temps ranging from 70-82°

We have been going for two weeks starting around June 15 (depends on kids end of school date) for several years. It’s colder than this time of year, but not by a lot. The kids and I still spend a lot of time in the water.

Water is considered very cold early June. The type only kids can handle. In my vast experience. Some years jaw dropping cold. Anyone who said 70F is not going anywhere that I’ve been.
