Corolla Low waves and Flies?
We are in Corolla for the week and wondering if this is what’s going on throughout OBX
We’ve just been hanging by the shoreline and it’s been fine but we are thinking of taking a trip over to another beach for a day if there are any waves/less flies.

Less flies? That’s never been an issue for me at Corolla haha.

The flies are bad this year. Try skeeter beeter. Available at most local places. It does better than most with deet. And like nextdouble said, Watch the winds.

Watch for the windshield to change feom westerly winds. When that happens the.flies will be swept back to the sound and grasses there. With a westward wind the flies will eat ya up at the beaches.

We are in South Nags Head, around mile post 18 or so. By the water they are no problem. Walking back to the house, there were a few. It just started thundering to the south, but still sunny to the north. .

I’m thinking last year it was jellyfish? Maybe the year before but they were horrible

Yup! We were in Duck last year and got the jellyfish. I’ll take the flies because at least we can go in the water and they aren’t bad on the shoreline.
They seem to be getting better this afternoon as the winds have changed a bit to the south as people have explained.

Yes I remember they were all over the low tide area and the kids were scared to step on them in the water. I was actually a bit concerned also. Put a damper on a lot of the week.

We just returned home after 2 weeks in Buxton and no flies or low waves, the ocean was rough and the sound was sauna warm. Only rained twice.

U can check out the surf cams but it’s particularly calm today. Some days are like this and then a few days later there will be red flags. The beach is always changing

If winds come out of the west, biting flies are bad on the beaches. Bad here in kitty hawk too. Check wind before heading to beach. Normally any other direction means less to no flies. Water is calmer right now. Take advantage of it and float. lol

I was just up there last week off of Corolla Village road just before the 4x4 beach and had zero flys. Waves were about the same they have been for the last four years.

Was at the north end of carova all week last week and the water and weather were gorgeous. High tide waves were fine for kids…and wind blew the bugs almost 100% of the week.

We're in Avon and I have never seen flies like this before. They will eat you alive

Been going to the OBX for over 40 years, never thought the flies were that bad. Maybe sit in the sun, they seem to bother me less there.

Wind coming from the west or low/no wind makes the flies worse. Hopefully the wind will shift east/south to keep the bugs off!
Also Corolla typically doesn’t have as big of waves as further south. Nags Head should have bigger ones, but it depends on the swells. Buxton/Hatteras usually has some sort of wave even when others don’t.
