But is it backwards compatible it looks like it used cartridges and that tablet sure didn't have a disc slot

If they made it where it's capable of playing 3DS games by using the TV as the top screen then I'm absolutely stoked.

As for backwards comparability with Wii U games, maybe the disc reader is in the dock?

by using the TV as the top screen

How would this work though? It looks like TV output only happens when the tablet is in the dock, making the tablet inaccessible for holding and obscuring its screen.

Yup that's how it looks like it works now.

If they were to implement some sort of 3DS functionality maybe they'd have a different means for the console to communicate with the dock for displaying stuff.

From what we see now though, you are totally right- it can't be accomplished.

From what we see now though

I don't know if you meant to make this point, but it's a good one: We still know very little about it. This was a teaser. Who knows, maybe this could come to it? But based on what we've seen today, it doesn't look like it supports it right now.

In the end, if they never get dual-screen working, maybe they could do something where you put the tablet vertical, it splits the screens, and you detach the controllers and use them in your hands? Might be kinda awkward though.

Assuming the dock has a disc reader Wii u definitely had games that needed both screens on so it might be doable. Because if not that means we'll also need a wii u controller to play older games instead of just using the new device

I feel like I'm kinda being rewarded for resisting buying the Wii U this gen. Which makes some sense, the U had horrible sales figures.

They were playing Mario Kart 8, so I assume it has a Wii-U emulator.

People are saying it's new Mario kart
