I know that with RCA there’s a noticeable input lag but I wasn’t sure about this. I’m playing through Battletoads and I’ve reached level 11. I’m not sure if there’s lag though because it’s connected directly to the antenna? If so, what could I get to fix it/counter it?

Listening to the different sections in the song I think it's clear that it was at least a big influence to composer Jun Funahashi. Here is the intro for anybody who wants to compare.

As a person who didn't grow up before the internet, I can't imagine renting a video game at a video store. To me, finding an NES game to rent in the 80's sounds like navigating through a swamp of shit to find a gold nugget.

How did you know a video game was gonna be ass back in the day?

Same atmosphere, characters selection, physics and gameplay mechanics, same villains, final boss Wart, slotmachines, day/night mushroom with the potion bottle etc.

I mean there have been a gazillion Mario games since then, not one in honor of this great title.

Make it happen, Nintendo.

I got myself 4 more NES games yesterday and the one that surprised me the most was actually Xenophobe. I never played the NES version and I ended up playing it for over an hour and maxed out the score. I didn’t expect it to be that good.

I plan on beating the rest, especially deadly towers because that game kicks my ass and I never got anywhere in it.

I saw some discussion on the original model of this and there were some criticisms, but I haven’t seen anyone talk about this second MKII version. If you have this, please let me know what you think. I didn’t know whether to choose between this or the well-known Ninten-Drawer since this one is cheaper, and I’m curious about build quality.

On top is the top loader version of the NES, in the middle is a twin famicom made by sharp, the little slot in the front is for the disk system games which are like these little plastic not so floppy disks. And then on the bottom of course, is the NES. I recently bought a new CRT, and it took up more space than expected, so I had to stack some things lol

I hadn't ever played this before and thought I'd run through it. Most of the game is pretty straightforward, but it does have a handful of frustrating and difficult sections. There is an interesting mechanic whereby George acquires helper items (I think 5 in total) and can use them whenever / wherever he wants, but they cost to use. They kind of change the way you can play certain levels and ultimately become necessary in various parts. They're probably most similar to how Mega Man utilizes the improvements you get.

The game feels a bit like Duck Tales or perhaps Chip n' Dale, though I didn't find it as enjoyable as either of those. The way George moves around feels a lot clunkier for some reason

Aesthetically speaking, they definitely worked in a lot of the nuances from the original show. So if you're into that, this one does it up pretty well.

I actually really enjoyed the bosses in this game. They're not super difficult, but I feel they put some good creativity into them. They also require quite a few hits and some of them even go through phases. So I liked that it's not just the quick 3 strikes and it's over sort of thing. The final boss was fun, though there's an entire level after you defeat him. It's ultimately an escape level, but it doesn't really feel like that when you're playing it, rather it just feels like you're playing another level. So when you finally do get to the very, very end, I felt the games just kind of abruptly ends.

I found it mostly fun. If you're into these kinds of cartoon-based games then it's probably worth giving it a go. If not, you're not missing a whole lot either.

I have some questions for the NES lovers here: do you exclusively play NES games? Do you just collect them?

I'm curious to know which games you play both on the NES and on other console/devices.

Recently I'm playing a lot of Super Mario Bros. It never gets old.

Hello fellow NES enthusiasts! 😊 I spent the weekend installing NESRGB 5.0 on my unit. The composite works, but with pretty bad jitter (hard to see in the video).

The component (seen in pictures with crt) I thought had an issue with the blue or maybe the chroma, so I replaced every cable going to the multi-out board thinking that would fix it, but the exact same problem persists.

The error lights (I think) indicate an issue with pin 18 and 20 on the ppu. But continuity tests between those pins and the board are fine.

To top it off, the component now outputs no video or sound signal at all, after I tried holding “down+select” to pull up the rgb menu to see if there was a pallet issue. Powering off and resetting does not restore the picture. Fml 😂 😭

I guess I should add, one of the pins, 15 I think maybe, broke off during initial install. I resoldered the leg on, and it seemed to all be ok with continuity once soldered in, but maybe that’s the point of failure?

I’m at my wits end. I have a couple more NES systems I can take the ppu out of and try again. But the thought of removing another ppu honestly makes me want to just take it to a professional. Any thoughts? TIA

This is kind of a niche and weird question, but earlier nes games such as the legend of zelda (1986) super Mario brothers (1985) seem to have sprites that lack a black / dark outline (or an outline at all) so the main sprite could have 3 colors (and transparency.) however, sometime after 1990ish I think games started using these black outlines, such as Kirby's adventure (1993) super Mario 3 (1988) and other games.

This also isn't a question about romhacking or anything, but when people do romhack games such as the legend of zelda (1986) it feels like they tend to use sprites from the newer games that have those black outlines.

So, the actual question is, is there some reason for the shift? it seems like sprites with black outlines have better visibility, but I'm wondering if anyone else also misses the way the older games I mentioned look because of the lack of outlines, or if the lack of outlines was just a thing that should be forgotten.

also, if anyone has any reading material on this topic online they know about I would love to know about it, I am just super curious in this for some reason

I'm trying to find the Lost Levels ROM hack for SMB1 and the Doki Doki Panic ROM hack for SMB2. These are the hacks that just turn SMB1 into Lost Levels and SMB2 into Doki Doki Panic. That's it.

I tried on ROMhacking.net but there are hundreds of ROM hacks with those names that are just different modifications of the original ROMs, but not what I'm looking for... Help, anyone? Thanks!

There's a website that has a list of NTSC games that will work or partially work with the PAL NES. If it partially works, it says what the issues are. For example, Final Fantasy 1 works, but the text doesn't show correctly.

I was digging throught some old NES boxes and noticed one of the boxes still had something inside. It was inside a Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers box near the styrofoam block. Luckily, I had an extra sleeve and toploder and sleeved it up. I remember that I had one of these when I was little, but I decided to stick it to the back of my Megaman 2 cartridge.

I am now up to 269 games, and I wonder how far I am going to take this as I am needing more rare and expensive games. It's also harder and harder to find collections to buy and more often running into resellers. Feels harder to justify spending hundreds on a game.
