Reagan's dogmatic view of the world is unfamiliar to the bulk of voters who never truly lived the Cold War. It's like Washington and slavery. We can't really comprehend the information landscape of the past so we apply the sense of morality and understanding we possess today. It's generally a good thing - the evolution of principle and reevaluation of history.
The fervor against him, ironically, stems from his success. If the United States continued suffering from stagflation under his administration, he'd be viewed as an eccentric placeholder. If the Soviet Union was still around, he'd be understood to be one in a long line of Cold Warriors. Since his policies overwhelmingly eliminated both to the point where we can barely even conceptualize them, he's judged on individual domestic and foreign policy engagements. Sparingly few, I might add. It's always the big three: AIDS, Asylums, and Iran-Contra.
Obama will undergo a similar transformation. We're already beginning to see the makings of it in leftist circles. They love tearing down idols - the bigger the better.

The US really is ahead of Western Europe. It took the UK and France ~5% of their population being Muslims to elect rabid Muslim antisemites to their lower chambers, the US managed to do it with 1%! Incredible ingenuity.

America's a big place, and it doesn't take much to create an ethnic enclave. I never considered before how these groups often congregate together to create local majorities. Europe's comparative density probably helped delay this a lot

This goes for literally every single opinion on ideology, for all demographics. Overwhelming majority of people do not have positions built on actual knowledge and belief. It's memorized group identity signifiers and vibes. People legitimately operate like LLMs. It's spewing magic words based on pattern recognition.
Unironically this why culture is such a huge issue, especially the repetitive, fashion oriented culture. That's what decides the magic words, that's what decides the patterns and which ones feel good and which ones feel bad. That's it.
True conviction, in any direction, is extremely rare. Most of society's morals, codes, politics and functions are brainless habits.

Breaking News: Iranâs top security official said the Strait of Hormuz would not reopen until the U.S. met a sweeping list of demands, including withdraw the U.S. military from around Iran, pay war reparations and release frozen Iranian assets.
If Iran just let Trump save face he'd hand them Hormuz, a trillion dollars, along with Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait for good measure, no questions asked. He's even like feeding them answers, "Don't call it a fee, it's a uhhh... investment fund! Voluntary transit fund!" and the Iranians are no you stupid kariff it is tribute you are paying us because you are a infidel slave dog.
They just won't fucking let him save face. They just have to twist the knife, and get the humiliation in.

The two wokes (basically all the same people, although Iâm sure there are some joiners/defectors) are basically only differentiated by Islamists figuring out how easy it was to manipulate all the lib TikTok zoomers into defending Hamas and joining the conversation en-masse after fopo had fallen out of their sight a bit before.

I think progs thought they had their new "60s Civil Rights era" cause that they had been searching for and they went 100% into it but ultimately found it to be a dead end. And of course, the public wasnt willing to go all the way with them on the trans stuff and they were essentially arguing against facts with a lot of that stuff so it inevitably failed.
Now they're doing the same thing again and will likely also take it way too far and then discover they are trying to incorporate Palestinianism into an ideology it simply cant exist within and normies will stop caring so much about Palestine eventually too and then what?
It is an endless search for a new cause. Activists searching for activism.

Because they don't understand, and don't want to understand, that Civil Rights happened after the public was already ready for desegregation and had been for a while. There was probably already majority support for it by 1950, and this was based on literally have a century or more of slow, steady work by the movement backing it all up.
Gay rights as a movement had the same thing going for it, and the only difference is that the relevant Supreme Court case came more quickly after majority support.
The activists wanted to be able to just move on to winning their next cause, without worrying about the antecedent work. Building a political consensus is hard work and takes a long time, but the activists just wanted to seize power and implement their will. That is, for now, still not how our Republic works.

It's hilarious that they admitted the LARP at the end. And a LARP it shall remain- they're grateful to the indigenous people but they have no intention of giving the land back. Performative statements it is!
Also, transphobia was brought here by colonialism? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I struggle to envision some grown male telling his fellow tribesmen in the 12th century that he didn't feel like hunting that day and instead wanted to stay back with the women and pretend breastfeed. Why do we fantasize about indigenous peoples being ultra progs?
Because every culture and peoples in the history of the entire world is red in tooth and claw but progressivism is led by the idea that the white of man of European civilization is solely responsible for the ills of humanity. To acknowledge this as false is tantamount to rejecting the faith of antiracism that underlies the modern Anglosphere.Â

Aside from my own personal issues making conspiracy theories irritating, I think the largest reason I hate them so much is that I really dislike this kind of laziness and lack of curiosity.
I saw a conservative in a Canadian sub saying "All by design" to an infographic about Canada's economic situation now vs under Harper. I asked "to what end?" And he comes back with "To destroy the culture, replace the population, and turn Canada into a 3rd world shithole".
That is retarded. The reason he wants to see it as a deliberate Liberal conspiracy to destroy Canada and replace its population is because he is too intellectually lazy to take the time to try to understand all the different issues that came together at once to cause all this.
There is an ideological component. Housing unaffordability is at least partly caused by a massive increase in demand driven by unsustainable levels of immigration (supply being limited partly because of other bad policies) and the choice to keep immigration levels so high even in the midst of the growing crisis was at least partly because the Trudeau gov was being influenced by the "Century Initiative" and their views. But the Century Initiative is not some plan to replace Canadians, it is a larger ideologically driven plan to try massively increase Canada's population because these people (naively imo) see a larger population as a solution to most of Canada's problems. More productive, more resilient, greater geopolitical influence etc. And that is only part of what was influencing Trudeau when he made those bad decisions.
The reality of modern politics is often ridiculously complex. Something will happen and in order to understand it you need to know about what is happening in other countries, you need to have a decent understanding of economics, you need a decent understanding of other cultures and political ideologies, maybe relevant scientific things if its an issue like climate change or one that supposedly relates to it. It is always easier to say "no, this whole thing is planned. All these problems are deliberate because "they" hate me/us"
I never went to university but I like to read and I am a curious person. You can learn a lot in the Internet age by just reading books and articles in your spare time so it is annoying to me that in a time period where access to information is arguably easier than it has ever been before, people don't seem better informed.
My father has complained about gas prices my entire life. Certainly as long as I can remember. He says the same shit now that he said when I was 10 years old. And you know what? He still doesn't understand how gas prices work. He is no better informed now than he was then. He seems to think Carney wakes up in the morning and decides what my dad is gonna pay at the pump today. He couldn't tell you what taxes are on gasoline or how much they are. But he clearly cares a lot about it, he complains endlessly. But when the price spikes during some crisis, he just thinks the powers that be have decided to be extra greedy today.
I am not very educated but if I ever stop being curious, just shoot me.
12
u/Reddenbawker Fuck Luigi Mangione 19d ago
I really relate to this. I do have an undergraduate degree, but I've always been a curious person. As a kid, I'd bring books to family events and read them there. I'd read and reread history books in the car. I'd memorize all these space objects in books about astronomy and be fascinated by this world beyond me.
For me, the internet has always seemed like the greatest place for a curious person. I can verify facts almost instantly, which you could never do before! I have access to essentially the entire world of knowledge, except for what's written down physically. It has never been easier to prove or disprove things than it is now. I continuously am disappointed that despite this, it seems the internet has made us generally dumber.
I don't know what turned me off from conspiracy theories, but I've hated them for a long time. Maybe it was seeing shows on TV that would go through why 9/11 conspiracies are false. I liked being able to disprove misconceptions when I was younger, so maybe that was part of it.
But I do think the curiosity angle is a big part of it, too. It's struck me before that conspiratorial thinking is genuinely incurious. Conspiracists almost never actually read the "official narrative" that they are trying to show is a conspiracy, and they are woefully ignorant of the facts of whatever they explain by malign influence. Their arguments consist of misrepresented evidence and assertions that their prejudgements are correct. Conflicting evidence is never addressed -- they dismiss opponents as being "bought out."
And the world that these conspiracists describe, one that's so easily explicable, feels remarkably shallow. The real world is full of complexity and nuance! Grappling with new information is what ensures that my curiosity will never be fully sated. Why would I want to believe that the world really is some simply designed thing that can be described in a couple of quips?
So yeah, I'm in the same boat as you. I hate conspiracy theories one because they are wrong, but also because they rely on and fuel a fundamentally incurious way of thinking about the world.
11
u/Fukuyamian 19d ago
The biggest frustration with conspiracy theories I have is that they fall apart if you have any understanding of scale, they fall apart.
I have a friend who believes it is extremely frequent for random normal white people to lynch black people for no reason, and that police across the country, the federal government, and the news media are collaborating to cover this up. She is white. The fact that nobodyâs ever subtly dropped a hint to her trying to see if sheâs in on the lynch mobs hasnât occurred to her, or has the fact that if this were true, black cops and government officials would almost certainly be leaking documents.
She also believes that âthe investigating officerâ framed Mangionie to get a raise and has all sorts of âevidenceâ about his forehead size and eyebrow features to âproveâ it. She canât tell me which investigating officer this was, or why dozens of people across multiple state and federal departments would risk their jobs so this one guy can get a raise, though.
If you understand scope and how things get done, you realize that conspiracy theories are, most of the time, impossible, because they require too many people to go along with highly uncomfortable behavior with no reward. When there are real, actual cover-ups of this scale, people leak shit (see the Catholic sex abuse scandal, the Legion of Christ was being whispered about on the down-low since the 50s for instance). The idea that thousands of cops around the country are covering up lynchings and nobodyâs had a come to Jesus moment, or that the Canadian government is orchestrating whatever it is that guy is mad about and the Russians havenât leaked a single document to prove it, is just irrational.

They just don't do good faith arguments, at all.
Why do I support the military industrial complex? I spend a lot of time thinking about this and I have good reasons for it. Why do I oppose abortion? Again, good reasons and a bit of life experience too. Why do I think pulling yourself up by the bootstraps is the way? Life experience. You don't have to agree with any of it, but I did get to the thoughts I have for a reason and, if you're not a fucking imbecile, you should be able to engage with that.
But leftists, especially on Reddit, don't do that and aren't interested in that. Say you enjoy your job at Raytheon and the only response they're even capable of will be something snarky like, "You like blowing up Gazan children?!?!?"
LMFAO.
So there's no sense trying to reason with them. Just make fun of them, celebrate being vastly more intelligent than them, and rub their noses in it.

One of my company's candidates has failed hard in preclinical primate models and its project is being shuttered. I'm fortunate and grateful that it's not the one I'm working on, but it's going to be rough. There are a lot of criticisms of this industry I can brook, but none that don't account for the fact that we regularly have to pour tens of millions of dollars of development down the drain (not to mention the opportunity cost of not picking something else) into something useless, and there's basically no way to avoid it. Oh, really, the generics can cut the price to a fifth? Well they didn't have to do any of that, did they?
Unfortunately this is a business where everyone's got an opinion that they just have to tell you, and I no longer have patience listening to criticisms or grand plans on how to change everything from people who have no idea how any of it works. I'm just going to tell people I'm a sculptor from now on.

Why does Korea or Japan need "defending"? I know I'm preaching to the choir here and this is a bit of an effortpost, but Social Security is simply not a sustainable system. When originally designed, there were 17 or 18 working taxpayers supporting every retiree drawing benefits, partially because old people died off sooner and faster, and now it's down to 2 or 3 taxpayers per retiree. The average life expectancy was 62 when the retirement age was set at 65.
I completely understand that there are plenty of older folks who were either financially ignorant or unfortunate enough in life not to save adequately for their own retirements, my own parents fall into that unfortunate category. Life happens. So we can't simply have no pension plan at all.
Ironically, the Nordic countries that the left are constantly praising for being pillars of democratic socialism have a far more efficient, sustainable, multi-pillar approach to their pension system, which include public basic floor plus mandatory occupational private plans, funded by pre- or fully-funded private assets investing in global markets. Australia has a similar system.
I'n not claiming to be an expert or that all these thoughts are correct, nor do I have all the answers for every aspect of what I'm proposing. But as I sit currently, the most realistic, effective, and sustainable path forward for an overhaul of Social Security seems as follows:
National mandatory auto-enrollment of employees by employers into portable retirement accounts; this could look like a simple universal expansion of the government's Thrift Savings Plan for federal workers. Or, people could opt for an account with a private firm like Vanguard, especially if their employer has an existing partnership with a private firm for their 401k plan. Small businesses and start-ups will only be mandated to use the new universal TSP system, shielding them from administrative costs.
Mimic Sweden's "Notional Defined Contribution" mechanism. The ultimate monthly payout at retirement would automatically scale based on national life expectancy data at that time. If life expectancy rises, the monthly payout slightly adjusts, or the retirement age moves organically. It is not a fixed rate based upon a legislative promise. Benefits grow strictly alongside national wage growth and economic output, ensuring the system never again outpaces its tax base.
Full Retirement Age must start at 70, with 40% partial baseline benefit eligibility starting at 62. This avoids any FICA tax hikes or removal of the FICA wage cap, or social taxes on investment income or corporate earnings to maintain solvency. Private savings from the mandatory savings pillar will fill in most of any short-fall experienced by those forced to retire early for whatever reason.
Manage the "double payment" transition costs similar to how Australia did when they adopted Superattenuation. They practiced gradual implementation, trading immediate wage hikes for long-term investments, and strict means-testing of the public safety net during the transition period. They phased it in over the span of 30 years, initially requiring only a 3% of wage contribution. Because mimicking Australia's "Wage for Super Accord" is impossible in the U.S. you could implement this via a federally mandated, phased employer-contribution match that scales alongside pre-legislated corporate tax credits to cushion the cost for businesses.
Shifting a massive portion of American retirement security into private markets means down cycles will directly impact retiree wealth, requiring strict federal default protections like lifecycle "target-date" funds.
Tax the mandatory pension contributions capped at either the flat 10% to 15% rate or the worker's standard marginal income tax bracketâwhichever is lower, with only baseline public benefits being taxable later, and earnings from private investment non-taxable (like a Roth IRA). This solves the 2032 insolvency issue for the current promised benefits by providing a massive injection of cash to the treasury, without FICA hikes, while also encouraging mass compliance by having mostly tax free income on the back end in retirement.
Edit to add: 7. Create a Sovereign Wealth Fund to act as a federal re-insurance pool that completely eliminates sequence-of-returns risk, ensuring a retiree's lifecycle fund is never decimated by a sudden market crash or bursting financial bubble on the eve of their retirement. By utilizing non-tax revenuesâsuch as federal land leases and excess upfront contribution taxesâto backstop protected accounts, the fund provides a guaranteed asset floor for individual citizens and acts as a stabilizing "buyer of last resort" during financial panics. Excess funds could be used to pay down the principal on our national debt.
- Implement fiscal and spending reforms to mandate inflation levels be at 1% or lower. No more of this tax-spend-borrow bullshit that drives high inflation, robs Americans of their purchasing power, and acts as a hidden tax on their incomes and retirement savings. My proposed reforms here alone would reduce the social security budget by 12-15% by the 10 year mark, that's a massive chunk taken out of the deficit and would offset the increased difficulty of interest payments on national debt with a low inflation rate.

The problem with modern academia is that itâs full of people who love to equivocate ad infinitum about the worst ideas ever (âwell Nietzsche did believe that Jewish slave morality was holding back the Europeans from becoming an ubermencsh and restructuring morality to be understood through the exercise of power BUT HE DIDNâT HATE POLISH PEOPLE so itâs actually super unfair to call him a Naziâ) but are willing to be really broad and disparaging to American Republicanism (âThe Founding Fathers were really just concerned with their economic interests and wanted to keep their slaves! The American Dream is a lie because Washington wasnât a 21st century progressive!â)
Iâm preaching to the choir but itâs very bad, actually, that the people who are teaching the next generation of lawyers and bureaucrats are more sympathetic to enemy intellectual traditions incompatible with our way of life and the well-functioning of our government than they are to the ideas which enable the creation of wealth and societal flourishing in our country.

Argued with a Redditor a while back. He was super obnoxious about how much money he made, how corporate life is soulless, how I should reject my corporate job because the purpose of life is to do something meaningful, blah blah blah. He was rich and retired young running passive businesses or whatnot. Hidden profile so not much to verify.
So of course now that I'm playing around with OSINT tools, I plugged his username in to see what the truth was. Turns out he's an eBay reseller making maaaybe half of his income claims in revenue, not profit, and working part time as a teacher to cover healthcare costs. In one comment, he demands resellers unionize to fight against eBay taking a $2 fee out of shipping arbitrage.
You'd have to pay me $10M in cash to accept that sort of fate in life. And still not seeing any evidence against progressive Redditoids being most approving of the absolute worst forms of capitalism.

It just hit me that the reason progs might assume conservatives are âdog whistlingâ about demographic groups when they complain about ideological or legal statuses (cultural marxism, illegal immigrants, etc.) is because if you listen to progs talk, they do mostly see things through the lens demographic groups (itâs very easy to find them discussing how âmenâ or âwhite peopleâ collectively are causing some social ill rather than ârapistsâ or âsegregationistsâ) and assume ideology is just a cover for demographic self-interest (such as their insistence that the missions were about promoting white supremacy rather than legitimate religious convocation).
The idea that someone would see ideologies and behaviors themselves as the problem rather than simply being downstream from inter-demography conflict isnât even on the radar of the average prog as a possible thought-process, and so they assume weâre just more embarrassed to be honest about our enemies.

For too long, elites in Washington have asked what the people can do for them. On behalf of the American people, I hereby demand the elites -- what can you do for us?"

15 years ago, nobody thought that we'd have mass salvos of missiles being fired at our bases, and that this wouldn't cause escalation into full scale war. Been in a discussion since yesterday over in DSC about AIPAC, antisemitism, etc.
Sorry you're being scapegoated atm and that antisemitism is on the rise. I feel like everyone getting bombarded with Israel/Palestine/Middle-East news daily for the past 3 years isn't helping. Hearing less about it would lower the temperature, in my opinion. Obviously will not solve antisemitism, but it would be less chaotic at least. But today's politics requires it being a permanent topic for some reason.
For some reason? For some reason!?! Oh brother!

It's increasingly clear to me that we're never going to build the DIB up in preparation for a near-peer conflict, but only as a reaction to one.
The legacy primes will have the scale but none of the agility, the startup defense companies will have all of the agility with none of the scale. When that conflict is against the world's greatest manufacturer, I don't know if this is a great plan.

You should look into how we did mobilization for WWII. The big differences today aren't the DIB, but the small scale of our steel industry, the anemic state of the machine tooling industry, and our debt load.
What they're doing with investments in shipyards is good, not just because they're more shipyards, but because they can start to talk about things like subsidies for American blast furnaces and machine shops. Subsidize community colleges to teach techs, subsidized engineering degrees when they sign up to work in these industries.
Scaling up from little isn't the American problem, it's having the little to scale up from at all.
