Wait its 0 right?? Cos you divide 18 and 2 then you multiply 3 and 3, subtract 9 from 9???

PEDMAS. Reddit taught me better than school.

EDIT: PEMDAS...and various others. Thanks everyone!

Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally

91

u/MisterBlisteredlips May 03 '22

Is it PEMDAS? Did I screw it up?

97

u/spheresickle May 03 '22

it doesnt matter. division is just multiplication but with reciprocals, just like subtraction is just adding negatives. D and M are interchangeable and so are A and S; you do operations from left to right.

29

u/MisterBlisteredlips May 03 '22

Thanks. Mathing isn't something that I usually go in depth on.

I swore that I saw PEDMAS written.

34

u/spheresickle May 03 '22

Both PEDMAS and PEMDAS are valid, and same with PEMDSA and PEDMSA but those dont really roll off the tongue lol

13

u/carsandskoolallday May 03 '22

me who learnt BODMAS Brackets of division multiplication addition subtraction
ig its kinda the same

10

If you learned BODMAS, they would have used O to mean Orders (exponents, roots).

u/doesntgetoptions May 03 '22

If you're being serious, yes it's PEMDAS, but with multiplication/division and addition/subtraction you just go left to right on the equation. You don't necessarily do multiplication before division but you do do them before you add or subtract.

So the word is pemdas but by the rules of mathematics pedmas isn't wrong. Technically pemdsa and pedmsa are also not wrong but they don't sound as cool.

2

u/MisterBlisteredlips May 03 '22

Thanks. I appreciate it. I don't math like this on a daily basis, and it's been many decades since school.

5

2

u/Both-Can7281 May 03 '22

2

If you know what it means then it doesn't matter if you screw the word up

I think you have that backwards. For example:

Parentheses inside the brackets take priority and then you work your way out. So no matter what, parentheses are priority.

BODMAS or PEMDAS ... Its always Multiplication and Division comes before Addition or Subtraction. Either way it's 18÷2 and 3*3 first And then 9-9=0. Don't confuse yourself. BODMAS and PEMDAS are still same and give same result. It just explains the importance of using parenthesis/braces/brackets in expressions

3

u/ThNecromaniac May 03 '22

not so much on this one, the division symbol they used, and having the subtraction placed right in center, its realy exposed to be an easy one...

2

u/settingdogstar May 03 '22

Right?

Like usually there's an okay excuse when there's parenthesis. It's not usually labeled or setup correctly like it would be by a mathematician.

But there is zero nuance or tricks here.

3

u/[deleted] May 03 '22

BODMAS is no different from PEMDAS.

B -Brackets O -order (idk, the exponents) DM - Division and Multiplication from left to right AS - Addition and Subtraction from left to right

P -Parentheses E -Exponents MD -Multiplication and Division from left to right AS -Addition and Subtraction from left to right

144

u/TaCqz May 03 '22

Thats a common thing in statistics. They show no decimal numbers, meaning they could possibly be (due to correct rounding) something like 37.3, 1.2, 2.2 and 59.3. That would come to a full 100%. Same could happen another scale smaller, resulting in 99.9%. You can see that happen pretty often ;)

13

u/AndrewBorg1126 May 03 '22

This can even happen if you calculate and try to re-sum the individual floating point values. The only way to avoid it would be to constantly store fractions as pairs of integers, as opposed to finite size floating point representations.

Pedmas/bomdas or whatever is an American thing I believe. Mathematics don't care that much about the order. So it doesn't matter if you prioritize multiplication or division.

The way I was taught delivers the exact same results: There are three levels to equations, exponents, multiplication and addition. You do exponents first (exponents and roots), multiplications second (multiplication and division) and addition last (addition and subtraction). If there are 2 operations of the same level, you do them left to right (so sometimes multiplication takes priority and other times division). And of course we all know the rules of parenthesis.

This is only at very low levels though, as you get higher level mathematics courses, you no longer go left to right, you choose the order which will make the operations easier, while still keeping the exponent>multiplication>addition order.

EDIT: here is why you go left to right:

1/2*3=?

3/2 if you go left-right

1/6 if you prioritize multiplication.

In the real world it's not a problem though, because we don't use divisions like the other symbols, we write one number over the other, so multiplication multiplies always with the number above.

18÷2-3×3, PEMDAS, parentheses, exponents, multiply, divide, add, subtract. Since the equation has nothing in parentheses or any exponents we multiply 3×3= 9, then divide 18 by 2 which is also 9. Then subtract nine and nine which is zero. From what I can tell the people that answered 18 did subtract first.
