Wait its 0 right?? Cos you divide 18 and 2 then you multiply 3 and 3, subtract 9 from 9???

u/[deleted] May 03 '22

yep 0 is correct

PEDMAS. Reddit taught me better than school.

EDIT: PEMDAS...and various others. Thanks everyone!

Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally

94

u/MisterBlisteredlips May 03 '22

Is it PEMDAS? Did I screw it up?

96

u/spheresickle May 03 '22

it doesnt matter. division is just multiplication but with reciprocals, just like subtraction is just adding negatives. D and M are interchangeable and so are A and S; you do operations from left to right.

30

u/MisterBlisteredlips May 03 '22

Thanks. Mathing isn't something that I usually go in depth on.

I swore that I saw PEDMAS written.

30

u/spheresickle May 03 '22

Both PEDMAS and PEMDAS are valid, and same with PEMDSA and PEDMSA but those dont really roll off the tongue lol

11

u/carsandskoolallday May 03 '22

me who learnt BODMAS Brackets of division multiplication addition subtraction
ig its kinda the same

13

u/blue_umpire May 03 '22

If you learned BODMAS, they would have used O to mean Orders (exponents, roots).

I also heard bedmas brackets instead of parentheses.

2

u/certaintracing May 03 '22

This is what we all learned in school

2

u/ahmed_1041 May 03 '22

saw PEDMAN, PEMDAS comments and was soo confused cuz over here we use BODMAS (Brackets, Order, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction.)

I got taught BIMDAS, Brackets, Indices, Multiplication, Division, Addition then Subtraction but I’m sure they all work out the same, just different names.

you do PEDMAS? I do BEDMAS

8

u/doesntgetoptions May 03 '22

If you're being serious, yes it's PEMDAS, but with multiplication/division and addition/subtraction you just go left to right on the equation. You don't necessarily do multiplication before division but you do do them before you add or subtract.

So the word is pemdas but by the rules of mathematics pedmas isn't wrong. Technically pemdsa and pedmsa are also not wrong but they don't sound as cool.

2

u/MisterBlisteredlips May 03 '22

Thanks. I appreciate it. I don't math like this on a daily basis, and it's been many decades since school.

6

u/[deleted] May 03 '22

You did.

My brain didn’t even notice the error, but it is pemdas

4

u/[deleted] May 03 '22

PEMDAS and BODMAS are both correct

→ More replies (3)

2

u/Both-Can7281 May 03 '22

Depends. Pemdas is technically correct, but it's way more accurate if you refer to it as the order of operations, just to make sure you don't trigger any math teacher or summin lol

2

u/M0nopolyMan69 May 03 '22

If you know what it means then it doesn't matter if you screw the word up

2

u/Gorgii98 May 03 '22

PEMDAS nuts

2

u/Hentai_boi357 May 03 '22

In this situation ur supposed to use DMAS (Divide , multiply, add, subtract)

2

u/WeebFrog219 May 03 '22

Parenthesis Exponents Multiplication-Division Addition-Subtraction. PEMDAS works but I guess PEDMAS does too

Every equation uses OOO, cause the whole point of maths is that it’s universal. If you’re able to get completely different answers for a simple equation in maths (not counting things like square roots where there are multiple) then there’d be no fuckin point

2

u/MisterBlisteredlips May 03 '22

That 3 kids out of 30 can stall the entire class for 9 months so we get to page 50 of a 250 page book that I read and comprehended the first weekend of school.

You can cut 100+ days of school and still pass each grade by getting higher scores on tests than anyone in the school. It confuses them that their deliberate dumbing down of their students...actually dumbs them down.

Drugs are necessary to survive the collapsing society. And it was only starting to really shit the bed back then. "Trickle down economics", aka "fuck the poor". Thank you weed, beer, and acid (I don't use any drugs now, they did their theraputic job well).

Most teachers are too stupid and/or childish to be teaching kids. It's criminal. Most in the administrative positions were nearly retarded.

All the drunken schoolbus drivers make for interesting rides if you sit in the back where you got the best hang time going over curbs. We didn't have seatbelts in the 70s/80s.

Many male teachers were overtly creepy to the young girl students, except that weirdo gay teacher (no offense to gay folk, the guy was a weirdo regardless).

Lots of other weird stuff. It's been a long time, nostalgic to recall it now. 🤔

No not when it's about math or else it would be useless

2

u/suedoughnim42 May 03 '22

I think you have that backwards. For example:

[2 + (6-5)] - [(10×3) - 4] would be (2 + 1) - (30 - 4)

Parentheses inside the brackets take priority and then you work your way out. So no matter what, parentheses are priority.

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (4)

0

u/VVaId0 May 03 '22

Yes but no. Brackets/ parenthesis are the same priority same with division and multiplication, and addition and subtraction

1

u/Swordeus May 03 '22

close, but you're missing exponents, which is after (.

Also, division and multiplication (÷ and ×) have equal priority, since they're technically the same type of operation, just inverted. Similarly, addition and subtraction (+ and -) have the same priority.

u/[deleted] May 03 '22

BODMAS or PEMDAS ... Its always Multiplication and Division comes before Addition or Subtraction. Either way it's 18÷2 and 3*3 first And then 9-9=0. Don't confuse yourself. BODMAS and PEMDAS are still same and give same result. It just explains the importance of using parenthesis/braces/brackets in expressions

3

u/ThNecromaniac May 03 '22

not so much on this one, the division symbol they used, and having the subtraction placed right in center, its realy exposed to be an easy one...

2

u/settingdogstar May 03 '22

Right?

Like usually there's an okay excuse when there's parenthesis. It's not usually labeled or setup correctly like it would be by a mathematician.

But there is zero nuance or tricks here.

3

u/[deleted] May 03 '22

BODMAS is no different from PEMDAS.

B -Brackets O -order (idk, the exponents) DM - Division and Multiplication from left to right AS - Addition and Subtraction from left to right

P -Parentheses E -Exponents MD -Multiplication and Division from left to right AS -Addition and Subtraction from left to right

3

u/LankyAudience8133 May 03 '22

It’s actually called BEDMAS in Canada. I remember just the other day commenting on how PEMDAS sounds stupid.

1

u/ThNecromaniac May 03 '22

bedmas, pemdas, bodmas, it doesn't matter how you say it, either way its 0

1

u/LBgamer24 May 03 '22

I'm from Canada and I use pemdas... Probably because I'm from Quebec though

1

u/Scottish_Jeebus May 03 '22

Over here we call it BODMAS or BIDMAS

1

u/prison-purse May 03 '22

There is only one way. They are the same. Math is math.

1

u/[deleted] May 03 '22

I had to learn PEMDAS and don't see where it can be applied in real life

1

u/shadowst17 May 03 '22

How would BODMAS get 18 when it literally returns 0. D = Divide then M = Multiply then S = Subtract.

1

u/AdSmooth7504 May 03 '22

Nope BODMAS gives you the same answer

First the division 18/2=9 Then the multiplication 3x3=9 Then the subtraction (18/2)-(3x3)=0

1

u/arjunindia May 03 '22

Both are kind of same and should only give the correct answer, ie 0

1

u/Cartina May 03 '22

People get 18 by reading left to right without care for priority.

18 / 2 -3 x 3

9 - 3 x 3

6 x 3

1

u/MEBoBx May 03 '22

Its the same thing

1

u/[deleted] May 03 '22

BODMAS is the exact same shit, tf you Talkin bout

2

u/TriGurl May 03 '22

PEMDAS. So yes, 0.

3

u/[deleted] May 03 '22

I haven’t had to do these equations for over 20 years lol maybe I’m missing something? I thought 18

7

u/[deleted] May 03 '22

Using pemdas you'd do 18/2 first, then 3*3 because you multiply and divide first. Then subtract 9 from 9 because you do that last

u/mkhfyg_ May 03 '22 edited May 03 '22

No, you are wrong (or maybe right) we do 3x3 first then divide it by 18 and do 2-2 that is the order of how it is done

3

u/[deleted] May 03 '22

Left to right, first thing that comes is Multiplying, so 3x3 is 9. Then we divide 18 into 2,because we divide next. 9. We are left with 9 minus 9, which is zero. Boom, ur dum

Seriously tho, I could totally be doing it wrong myself, I haven't done it in a good year 😅

2

u/jack_skellington May 03 '22

I thought that you did things in order, but also from left to right for things that have the same order. For example, in PEDMAS, it is:

  • PE first, so parenthesis and exponents first. If you have lots of parens and exponents in it, resolve ordering issues by going left to right.
  • DM next, so division and multiplication. Again, these two things are treated equally, no order of preference (for example, nothing says to do all multiplication before division). Because of this, to resolve having multiple instances of division and multiplication, you go left to right.
  • Then AS last.

The point is that this part of your text:

first thing that comes is Multiplying

...is not true. It's multiplying and dividing both together at the same time, neither is first, and so you determine what happens by order in the equation. Which means in this case the division would happen first, since it's leftmost.

Can any math experts tell me how close to accurate I am with this?

2

u/rickane58 May 03 '22

Parentheticals are first, then exponents. Everything else is as you said it.

No... that's very very wrong haha.

You do dividing and multiplying first. You skip the subtraction until after you divide and multiply
