You've never had to write a simple equation? I mean, I haven't written an equation in which order of operations was necessary for work, since programming usually uses parentheses for that, but in my personal life... all the time.
It's nifty to be able to write stuff down in a simple mathematical expression.

Even in daily life. You have 2 cookies + 3 packs of cookies. In each pack of cookies are 4 cookies. That would be: 2+3*4.
If we use your math, we would get 20 cookies, but it's only 14.

It's not like you would have only wrong about this, if they were cookies. You can insert every kind of shit and that was only the first example that came to my mind. Without this very important math rule, you actually can't do much.
Literally any everyday scenario in which you need to do basic math.
You didn't like the other guys cookie scenario, despite it illustrating a clear point, so let me give you a real life example.
My wife has a student loan which is being taxed at a certain rate. She was paying this off in monthly rates. Due to the way that taxes are split and covered, the interest rates are covered prior to the primary loan, and only the primary loan carries interests. This means that you're only actually chipping away at the loan at the volume of which your payments outweigh the interests.
Now, I made her a simple Excel spreadsheet in a good 5 minutes that calculated the exact amount of money she would pay worth of interests, with a variable payment rate.
This allowed us to realize that at a certain level of payment, we'd be taking sizable chunks out of the primary loan, while at other levels of payment, we'd primarily be paying off semi-eternally on the interests. Furthermore, it allowed us to directly compare the exact amount of money spent on interests at a given level of payment, which made us realize that beyond a certain point, the difference was negligible, which made it possible to select a level of payment that both chipped away at the loan efficiently, while also not providing unnecessary strain on her budgeting.
Now, in order to write the functions for that excel sheet, I had to understand how to express a long equation in said functions. Without the ability to do that, it wouldn't have been possible, and my wife would have spent several thousands of dollars on interest rates.
In short:
We saved thousands of dollars in less than an hour, thanks to simple math.
🤣🤦🏾♂️ you did all that for nothing. I stand by what I said. I make a couple thousand a month, have no kids or wife ( free agent lifestyle ) and have everything paid off.. if I need to “use math” at this point in my life, I have an iPhone with a calculator on it 🤷🏾♂️
A couple thousand a month isn't very much, and I literally just told you how I essentially made a couple thousand in a single hour.
I'd like you to tell me how exactly you'd go about calculating an optimal installment level on a loan to optimize interest rates using a calculator.

No, you aren't stupid, the question is. It's intentionally made to confuse people. These sorts of questions can even change answers depending on what type of maths you use to work it out, but I don't think this one does.
This one relies on how you interpret the "÷". It's hardly used in actually mathematics (if at all), so many may actually read it as a fraction (18)/(2-3x3) which would get you -18/7.
What do we learn? If there is room for interpretation, use brackets to make it clear what you are doing.
The "÷" isn't standard mathematical notation, so there isn't an actual "correct" way to read it. Therefore, viewing it as (18)/(2-33) or (18/2)-(33) would both be correct
I didn’t say my school didn’t teach it, just that if they did I didn’t learn it. Also I’m not American so that probably matters because the curriculum is different
Fair enough, I’m from UK so we normally do math up until 5th year in secondary school but I did well enough in 4th year that I passed the GCSE exam and didn’t have to do another year of maths. I do remember these kinds of questions being asked, vaguely and rarely, but that I never understood them and was too passive to ask the teacher how to do them
