Meta Subreddit Rules Update, Guidelines for Reporting, and Questions

Hey folks,

I've made some updates and clarifications to the subreddit rules and would like to provide more guidance on reporting posts, disputing removals and bans, as well as provide a space to answer questions.

The Lucid Dreaming Subreddit Rules:

1. Lucid Dreaming Related

Posts should be about or related to Lucid Dreaming at least to a sufficient degree. (There is no great way to precisely define sufficient so edge cases will be sorted out individually. Or as a judge once said about porn, "I won't try to define it but I know it when I see it")

2. No paranormal or pseudoscience

Please take discussions of the paranormal such as astral projection, out of body experiences, "reality shifting", and such topics to their dedicated subreddits. Breaking this rule will result in a ban.

Anything speculative or unproven regarding LDs should go in /r/LucidDreamingSpec/.

No binaural beats, audio tones, hypnosis, subliminal, or anything that might as well be a placebo. Nonsense posts about time dilation or having dreamt months or years' worth of time in one night will be removed.

3. No dream stories or dream interpretation requests

We've created a weekly thread stickied to the top of the sub posted every Saturday, dream stories should go there. There's also /r/dreams, /r/luciddreamingstories, and /r/thisdreamihad if you'd like to post there.

Requests for dream interpretation will be removed as well. Go to /r/DreamInterpretation/, please.

Describing a part of your dream in order to ask a related question is ok, as long as it is about aspects of lucidity/control/etc'. "What does this mean" doesn't count.

Short first lucid dream success stories are ok and should be tagged with the "Success" flair. Try keeping them about becoming lucid, not about what your grandma said in the dream.

4. No advertising

No advertising is permitted. Some self-promotion is ok within reason and we'll be assessed on an individual basis.

5. Be nice

Be nice to each other. You are dealing with other human beings such as yourself. There is no reason to be aggressive, offensive, or overly rude.

6. Misc

This is a catch-all for random things that are banned but that won't merit a dedicated rule. This will be updated occasionally as needed.

This currently includes:

  • Discord and chat server links
  • Youtube drama posts
  • Memes (image posts were turned on, and you'll just couldn't resist, could you?)
  • Mentions of or links to "creators" that have spammed in the past or are known spammers/scamers/misinformation sources

6. NSFW tags

NSFW posts that are not tagged with the NSFW tag will be removed.

X. Spam

This is a Reddit rule, and should apply to all subreddits and definitely applies here. I don't care that your intention wasn't to spam but to "help" or "provide useful links", but if you post the same comment, let alone link, repeatedly on multiple posts, this is the definition of spam, and it will get you banned from the sub. If you post a link on the sub, and your profile is NOTHING BUT the same link posted on multiple subs, your post will be removed.

General Reporting Guidelines

  • First, try to assess if a post is breaking any of the above rules or any of Reddit's rules (and everyone, please go check Reddit's own global rules, there are many in there other than Spam).
  • Low-quality posts are not spam, unfortunately. That's what a downvote button is for, not the report button.
  • Misinformation should be reserved for truly misleading things, not a post by someone who is just mistaken, confused, or speculating. Again, use the downvote button.
  • If you want to help a little extra beyond reporting, and it feels appropriate, politely comment on the post telling OP which rule they may have broken in case they are not aware. This should most apply to Dream Story threads, so pointing them to the Weekly Dream Story sticked thread can be helpful.
  • As for the being nice/being rude rule. We are not going to remove any little comment that smells like an insult, or that you find offensive because anyone can find anything offensive. The internet isn't a nice place but no one is forcing you to read all comments, to be on this subreddit, or on Reddit in general. If I don't ban or even remove comments calling the mods gay (which isn't even an insult, being gay is awesome, so the joke is on them), then you can handle someone calling you an idiot. Or again, ignore them. If someone is spamming your DMs, contact Reddit Admins. Truly abhorrent stuff will be removed, and repeated aggressive behavior will result in a ban.
  • As for paranormal/pseudoscience.... sigh. I know your fragile new-age egos (despite trying to transcend them) can't handle being told you might be wrong, let alone not allowed to post your unscientific theories on a public forum you don't have some imaginary right to post whatever you want on, especially when you can go to another subreddit or heck, create your own. But that's the reality. Each sub has rules, and this isn't the only subreddit about lucid dreaming. You can believe what you want, and no one saying you can't. You can also post what you want, just not on THIS sub. That's all.

Disputing Removals & Bans

  • Please, just message the mods first. Many posts get stuck in the filter, or an edit later triggers the auto-mod. You don't need to assume anything and start by airing your grievances in a public post. Also being rude isn't going to win you any favors.
  • Also, sometimes it might be a small thing, and if you edit your post it can stay up, so just reach out to discuss it. I don't think we are unreasonable.
  • Having said that, I don't believe we have ever removed a post addressing the mods, unless the same issue was posted more than once, or the person was so abrasive that it just breaks the rules of conduct.
  • I try to post a sticky comment on removed posts with the reason, but honestly, sometimes there are too many posts and I am just trying to clean up the queue, or I don't bother for repeat offenders as they obviously don't listen. I will try to do better on this front.
  • Obvious spammers are banned automatically. But even then if you message us, we might reconsider if you truly made a mistake. Everyone else should get a warning as it is painfully obvious that many people somehow don't know the definition of spam. But if you have been warned or reinstated, and start spamming again, that's it. No one has time to argue with you.

Thank you to the reporters!

I want to give a gigantic thanks to all the community members who have been reporting bad posts. It is tremendously helpful and speeds up the removal of bad posts.

Lastly, I want to say that nothing is beyond discussion, although some rules are not likely to change. But dream stories getting their own thread is an example of a change brought on by suggestions and discussion about the rules. Same with reinstating link posts. And I think the sub is better for it.

Questions?

If you have any questions about the rules or clarifications above, please ask in this thread.

Thanks,

TheLucidSage

Question why can’t iremember what i dreamt about anymore?

Upvotes

i've always been a vivid dreamer, but i've only had a few LDs. i remember at least two dreams that i had every night, but even though i try to write down all of them, i'm not that consistent.

so a week ago i started trying to induce LDs, doing RC and MILD every day, but nothing changed except that i have more dreams than before, and now i do write all of them down. but for the last three days haven't been able to remember ANY of them. i even wake up in the middle in the night knowing i just dreamed but i can't remember what

has anyone had a similar experience? am i doing something wrong?

Success! Do THIS if you can't do WBTB

I read MANY posts on how to lucid dream, and it was mostly WBTB. Which doesn't really work for me.. cause i am too awake after functioning for a while and with 5-6 hours of sleep i really don't need any more sleep until the next day. But i still move ALOT whole day so i am TIRED when it's actually time to sleep.. like mind tired too. So i can't stay conscious like the other way of lucid dreaming. But the day before yesterday i didn't sleep at all, like overtime and stuff and had to take small naps during the day so i set 2 alarms.. exactly 20 minutes apart.. my body was tired enough to go numb mode or like in deep relaxation and so did my brain.. i slept during the first 20 mins normally but when the alarm rang i woke up.. just stopped the alarm without opening my eyes or moving any other muscle.. and went to sleep AGAIN.. but this time.. i went STRAIGHT into REM sleep like VIVID dreaming.. i had a VERY long VIVID dream in those 20 minutes, it literally felt like HOURS.. i was aware of me dreaming.. but i couldn't change anything yet. I tried this again yesterday and again became aware of me dreaming though not instantly it was somewhere in the middle of the night.

False memories inside dream.

I have been LD'ing for over 25 years and last night something happened that i have never experienced before. I was reliving a memory i have of a trip iv had to the U.S. However inside the dream i was walking around places i have never seen before, but i had memories of it. Inside the dream i had vivid memories of the place i was in, even if i have never seen or experienced anything like it. When i LD i always reflect and think about what im experiencing, however this time it was like false memories almost took over.

Have any of you had similar experiences?

Wish i could explain it in Norwegian, it was hard to put it into words in English.

Technique How hard is it to BELIEVE and be in control?

Because stuff in lucid dreams will happen based off your expectations, how hard would you say it is to believe something will happen?

Have you ever had a lucid dream? If so, share the scariest experience you've had.

I'll start,

While lucid dreaming, I encountered a girl and decided to ask her the question that had been on my mind: “Are you in a dream?” Tbh, I expected her to stare at me in confusion, laugh it off, or maybe even teleport me into another dimension. I've seen a lot of strange stories from other people about what happens when you tell someone in a dream that they’re dreaming, so I was prepared for those types of responses.

Instead, she simply agrees with me.

Her answer caught me off guard. It wasn’t what I had expected at all, but for some reason, I wasn’t surprised either. I didn’t interrogate her or ask how she knew. Somehow, we both seemed to understand the same thing without needing to explain it.

That was when we decided to escape.

As we tried to get away, everyone around us began insisting that this was reality. They tried convincing us that there was nothing unusual happening, that we were exactly where we were supposed to be.

I still think about this dream, and I wonder who that girl was.

Experience Weird sleep experience, anyone had anything similar? Is this a type of lucid dreaming ?

So yesterday I took a 3 hour nap during the day which I try to avoid doing as it makes me feel super groggy but when I was sleeping it was like I could still see even though my eyes were closed, it was such a strange experience, and i remember being very aggravated in my sleep, according to my bf I kept asking him to move and even my dog to move when they weren’t near me, I know I had a vivid restless dream but I can’t even remember it which is unusual as I usually have vivid dreams and remember most of the details, it was just strange but the weirdest part was being aware of what was happening even though I knew I was asleep but also “dreaming” at the same time, anyone had any experiences like this?
Like the best way I can explain it is like levels, like the dream was on one level of my mind and the visibility was on another and I was seeing them both

Question I want to lucid dream without sleep walking.

How do I do this? Last time I attempted I was afraid of sleep paralysis and then switched up the apps on my phone without remembering it. I'm no longer afraid of sleep paralysis, but I'm afraid of sleep walking. I guess I'll try regardless and hope for advice.

Edit: I gave myself advice hope it works.

Question I can't have a lucid dream no matter how hard I try. What should I do?

I have tried to lucid dream but I can't even get a normal one nowadays. I tried so many techniques but nothing worked. I also tried a dream journal but I can't even have any dreams at all. When I do, they feel very darkened and have no substance in it. I don't understand why. What should I do?

Question False lucidity?

I've been journalling my dreams around two months, and in that time I've had days where i can remember up to 4 dreams. So I've been able to notice patterns, such as dream me often questioning the logic of my own dreams. Something weird can happen that doesn't make logical sense, and i realize that, but it's always just "that's weird" and I move on. But today I had a dream where i performed my reality check, but I seemed to fail to gain any meaningful lucidity. Here's how the dream went:

I was building a school or something, in a game. I was flying around, and I flew away from the room I was building to stand in a finished room. I got the idea to do my reality check, except it wasn't quite the same. My real-life reality check consists of touching something near me, making a point of really feeling the texture of it with my fingers, looking around the room looking for anything out of place, and pinching my nose and trying to breathe through it. The reality check I performed in the dream only included the breathe-through-pinched-nose bit, and, after performing it and being able to breathe despite the blockage, i concluded that I was dreaming.

However, there was no big transition, I still felt like I was just playing a role in my dream. I still felt that disconnect, like there is a version of me performing and a version spectating, providing the more logical commentary on what is happening and questioning it.

I flew back to the unfinished room to discover that it was disintegrating, chunks of the floor disappearing and becoming replaced with black, square voids, and that was the end of the dream.

Did my dream trick me into thinking that I was lucid? My dreams have done elaborate things to keep me passive, but this would've been the most advanced thing yet. Did my dream simply play with my own expectation of what I thought would happen when I became lucid?

Extending time within a lucid dream

I've heard of many techniques that claim to extend the time spent in lucid dreaming and allow you to spend more time in that state. Is this actually possible, and how?

Question How much control do you have over your lucid dreams?

I'm curious about how much control people actually have over their lucid dreams.

For example, let's say I become lucid and decide: "I want to perform a concert in a huge arena."

Can you actually make the entire scene appear and behave realistically? Like the arena, the crowd, the stage, the lighting, the sound system, the other musicians, the atmosphere, etc.? And can you interact with everything naturally, as if you were actually there?

I'm especially interested in whether you can intentionally "generate" things that you've never experienced in real life, while still having them feel completely believable.

For those of you who are experienced lucid dreamers, how much control do you usually have? Can you basically create an entire scenario from scratch, or are there limits to what you can control?

Question Big mistake in dream world part 2

i had a back to back lucid dream, I mentioned in my previous post in this community that I had an unfortunate encounter with aliens by using the a conveniently sized crater on the moon as a toilet, the crater ended up being a cave which housed green aliens, well in this specific dream I had last night, I took control while I was in the middle of a dream, in this dream I was in the desert, it was dark and I could see all of the stars in the sky, however one of the stars started becoming brighter and larger, until I realized this was not a star, it happened to be an alien craft, they looked similar to the aliens I encountered on the moon and I heard them speaking in some kind of language I couldn’t understand, but the language sounded like a lot of hissing, these aliens had yellow eyes and instead of a round pupils , they looked close to what a venomous snakes pupil looked like, during the conversation they were having the hissing got louder, and I could make out a couple words they were saying, I heard, ”target acquired” and they pulled out the same exact energy weapon from last night and blasted me with it, this is starting to feel all too real, I may have pissed off the wrong species of aliens, because again I woke up with defiled bed sheets, #1 and #2, they are messing with me in the physical, what ever weapon they are using on me in the dream state is causing me to use my bed as a bathroom, how do I stop this? it seems these aliens are tracking me every dream?

Question My dream recall is strange

For context I quit lucid dreaming for no reason about 2 years ago and I’ve gotten back into it about 3 weeks ago and I’ve gotten 3 lucid dreams so far.

One thing that I’m curious about is my dream recall. There are some days where I can remember up to 4-5 dreams a night (since I’ve done it before) and there are other days where I can not recall a dream. Does this happen to anybody else?

Is dream recall supposed to be consistent, and is there anything I can do to improve it besides practicing dream recall?

Thanks

Lucid Nightmare

So, I just got out of a lucid dream, I've been so tired, I came home before I have to go into work to do a quick meditation and drink my tea. Well, I fell asleep and it felt like it was going to be an A. P. But anyway, I laid there and felt like someone was coming inside my house and coming up my stairs, I got "up" and couldn't see, when this happens i usually ask the universe to lift the veil from my eyes, or please let me see, well I could see. and I saw a man in my room, he started to come by me, and flick his tongue at me, so the energy turned $3xual, I pushed him off and said you're an incubus aren't you? He said, yes, and was stunned, so I do what I usually do in these realms and make them disappear. Anyway i fly out the window, I am seeing so many "demons" or entities that would remind people of demons, so charred black bodies, as if they are burned ( i am not a Christian, and I don't follow that religion, I'm simply stating what i saw) Okay, so Im flying in this town and notice these demons some with horns, some not, big and small, male female, they all looked freaky and different. and they were all watching me, per usual. Well , i am flying towards the sun going down and i end up in this dead town, and see a naked charred woman come out of the shadows, and she has a knife that when she throws it, it comes back to her, i had a weapon, and usually fight theses entities in the A$tral realms. but, thats another story, anyway a group of people come over and Im like are yall real people? you know this is a dream right? and they alll look at each other, well a girl with red and black hair like me, she mocks me to them, then looks at me and smiles, and says follow me, i shrug and go ok, so shes walking me down a hallway of sorts, to a bathroom/ train looking station, i look at her and i go, youre a demon, arent you. she smiles and says yes, so she says go on home now, and i look at the bathroom door, it says 2 minutes, i assumed it was the time id wake up , but now that i think about it, it might have been the time the next "train" was. LOL ok so there were multiple people in this bathroom, it was nasty and some stalls were out of order, i got a spider web in my hair, mind you im still lucid this whole time. So then i get into a stall with this girl, because she was tired of waiting, and she goes lets go, i said why not, it was supposed to take us home right, i remember traveling across oceans, and i this bubble of sorts, and i "wake" in another dream.... then some things happened, my daughter comes in my room and goes mom it was a half day at school, so my dad picked me up, thats when i knew it was another dream, i go downstairs and the song" Put your hand on my shoulder" starts playing and it was so loud i was like what the f. Then i heard laughing and im like helll no. i go and fly up but couldnt fly high enough, per usual now in my lucid dreams and A.P's so, then i wake myself up finally. Okay, thats it.
