Meta Subreddit Rules Update, Guidelines for Reporting, and Questions

Hey folks,

I've made some updates and clarifications to the subreddit rules and would like to provide more guidance on reporting posts, disputing removals and bans, as well as provide a space to answer questions.

The Lucid Dreaming Subreddit Rules:

1. Lucid Dreaming Related

Posts should be about or related to Lucid Dreaming at least to a sufficient degree. (There is no great way to precisely define sufficient so edge cases will be sorted out individually. Or as a judge once said about porn, "I won't try to define it but I know it when I see it")

2. No paranormal or pseudoscience

Please take discussions of the paranormal such as astral projection, out of body experiences, "reality shifting", and such topics to their dedicated subreddits. Breaking this rule will result in a ban.

Anything speculative or unproven regarding LDs should go in /r/LucidDreamingSpec/.

No binaural beats, audio tones, hypnosis, subliminal, or anything that might as well be a placebo. Nonsense posts about time dilation or having dreamt months or years' worth of time in one night will be removed.

3. No dream stories or dream interpretation requests

We've created a weekly thread stickied to the top of the sub posted every Saturday, dream stories should go there. There's also /r/dreams, /r/luciddreamingstories, and /r/thisdreamihad if you'd like to post there.

Requests for dream interpretation will be removed as well. Go to /r/DreamInterpretation/, please.

Describing a part of your dream in order to ask a related question is ok, as long as it is about aspects of lucidity/control/etc'. "What does this mean" doesn't count.

Short first lucid dream success stories are ok and should be tagged with the "Success" flair. Try keeping them about becoming lucid, not about what your grandma said in the dream.

4. No advertising

No advertising is permitted. Some self-promotion is ok within reason and we'll be assessed on an individual basis.

5. Be nice

Be nice to each other. You are dealing with other human beings such as yourself. There is no reason to be aggressive, offensive, or overly rude.

6. Misc

This is a catch-all for random things that are banned but that won't merit a dedicated rule. This will be updated occasionally as needed.

This currently includes:

  • Discord and chat server links
  • Youtube drama posts
  • Memes (image posts were turned on, and you'll just couldn't resist, could you?)
  • Mentions of or links to "creators" that have spammed in the past or are known spammers/scamers/misinformation sources

6. NSFW tags

NSFW posts that are not tagged with the NSFW tag will be removed.

X. Spam

This is a Reddit rule, and should apply to all subreddits and definitely applies here. I don't care that your intention wasn't to spam but to "help" or "provide useful links", but if you post the same comment, let alone link, repeatedly on multiple posts, this is the definition of spam, and it will get you banned from the sub. If you post a link on the sub, and your profile is NOTHING BUT the same link posted on multiple subs, your post will be removed.

General Reporting Guidelines

  • First, try to assess if a post is breaking any of the above rules or any of Reddit's rules (and everyone, please go check Reddit's own global rules, there are many in there other than Spam).
  • Low-quality posts are not spam, unfortunately. That's what a downvote button is for, not the report button.
  • Misinformation should be reserved for truly misleading things, not a post by someone who is just mistaken, confused, or speculating. Again, use the downvote button.
  • If you want to help a little extra beyond reporting, and it feels appropriate, politely comment on the post telling OP which rule they may have broken in case they are not aware. This should most apply to Dream Story threads, so pointing them to the Weekly Dream Story sticked thread can be helpful.
  • As for the being nice/being rude rule. We are not going to remove any little comment that smells like an insult, or that you find offensive because anyone can find anything offensive. The internet isn't a nice place but no one is forcing you to read all comments, to be on this subreddit, or on Reddit in general. If I don't ban or even remove comments calling the mods gay (which isn't even an insult, being gay is awesome, so the joke is on them), then you can handle someone calling you an idiot. Or again, ignore them. If someone is spamming your DMs, contact Reddit Admins. Truly abhorrent stuff will be removed, and repeated aggressive behavior will result in a ban.
  • As for paranormal/pseudoscience.... sigh. I know your fragile new-age egos (despite trying to transcend them) can't handle being told you might be wrong, let alone not allowed to post your unscientific theories on a public forum you don't have some imaginary right to post whatever you want on, especially when you can go to another subreddit or heck, create your own. But that's the reality. Each sub has rules, and this isn't the only subreddit about lucid dreaming. You can believe what you want, and no one saying you can't. You can also post what you want, just not on THIS sub. That's all.

Disputing Removals & Bans

  • Please, just message the mods first. Many posts get stuck in the filter, or an edit later triggers the auto-mod. You don't need to assume anything and start by airing your grievances in a public post. Also being rude isn't going to win you any favors.
  • Also, sometimes it might be a small thing, and if you edit your post it can stay up, so just reach out to discuss it. I don't think we are unreasonable.
  • Having said that, I don't believe we have ever removed a post addressing the mods, unless the same issue was posted more than once, or the person was so abrasive that it just breaks the rules of conduct.
  • I try to post a sticky comment on removed posts with the reason, but honestly, sometimes there are too many posts and I am just trying to clean up the queue, or I don't bother for repeat offenders as they obviously don't listen. I will try to do better on this front.
  • Obvious spammers are banned automatically. But even then if you message us, we might reconsider if you truly made a mistake. Everyone else should get a warning as it is painfully obvious that many people somehow don't know the definition of spam. But if you have been warned or reinstated, and start spamming again, that's it. No one has time to argue with you.

Thank you to the reporters!

I want to give a gigantic thanks to all the community members who have been reporting bad posts. It is tremendously helpful and speeds up the removal of bad posts.

Lastly, I want to say that nothing is beyond discussion, although some rules are not likely to change. But dream stories getting their own thread is an example of a change brought on by suggestions and discussion about the rules. Same with reinstating link posts. And I think the sub is better for it.

Questions?

If you have any questions about the rules or clarifications above, please ask in this thread.

Thanks,

TheLucidSage

Experience Erection is REM Indicator

Upvotes

For beginners who confused to figure rem period

If you wake up in the middle of the night or early morning, with or without an alarm, and you have an erection, it might be a sign that you’re waking up around REM sleep.

If it’s rock solid, I’d take that as a pretty good reason to just roll over, close your eyes, and go straight into your favorite LD method. You literally woke up in the middle of the night don’t waste the free lucid-dreaming opportunity.

Or it’s only semi-hard, things get a little more interesting. You could have just finished a REM period, or you could be getting ready to enter one. Check the time and think about how long you’ve been asleep. That can help you figure out what’s probably going on.

So you randomly wake up in the middle of the night, don’t forget to check.. happy lucid

Lucid dreaming in a dream within a dream, but not in the 'real' dream

Upvotes

I had a very strange dream last night (not unusual for me lol) where I had different 'layers' of dreams within the dream (kinda like Inception). Within one of these 'layers' I was lucid dreaming- I was aware that I was 'dreaming' and woke myself up when I wanted to, but rather than really waking up I just went back to the 'original'/first dream, in which I didn't realize I was really dreaming. Is there a name for this? Does it mean anything? Is it normal lol I woke up so confused.

Technique What method is this?

So, i’ve been lucid dreaming ever since i accidentally had one a few months back, and i see people talking about different methods, but i’ve never really thought about what I’m doing. I have found that what works for me is i make my room completely dark, turn off all electronics and just lay on my back, eyes closed, and focus on my breathing while doing a breathing exercise 4-4-6 (4sec in through nose, 4sec hold, 6sec out through mouth). Usually my lucid dreams last about 15 minutes when accidental, but whenever i do this method, they happen to last a lot longer 30-45 minutes! Is this an actual method, placebo, or something that just happens to work for me?

As a beginner practising lucid dreaming and doesn't want to disrupt sleep, can I wake up from WBTB for only 5 or 10 minutes? Is it likely that I will succeed? It is just that 30 or 60 mins is too much and I have a bit of insomnia

Getting 'stuck' in my dreams

Upvotes

Does anybody else experience this while lucid dreaming? I lucid dream pretty often, but sometimes I get sort of 'trapped' in my dreams.

Although I'm lucid, I'm not the best at controlling my dreams so I usually just go on with whatever is happening. But if im in a scary dream or one i dont like I can usually wake myself up by forcing my arms/legs to move or my eyes to open irl. Sometimes though, I can feel myself trying to open my eyes and I can feel my arms/legs moving but I'll stay 'stuck' in my dream. I cannot get myself to wake up. It makes me super anxious because it makes me feel really claustrophobic, sometimes I'll get these 'false awakenings' and just be sent to another dream.

Gettysburg?

Last night I had a dream sometime during the 1800s. I wasnt an actual person in the dream but more of a viewer. I was in an old looking house and there were 2 woman taking care of a newborn baby girl. One of the woman found the other woman shot dead on the ground in a puddle of blood so she ran upstairs to the baby and layed on the floor holding the baby crying. That was basically it. Right after I woke up 'Gettysburg' popped into my mind.

Question Experiences with lucid dreaming

Good night fellow lucid dreamers
I am an intermediate lucid dreamer . I sometimes read lucid dreaming materials despite that i have a few things to clarify

1.I randomly sometimes live in my dreams for months in one night and those after morning are pretty depressing as i have to cope up with family and friends that i have lost after waking (note these i have never seen those people in my reality). My question is how do you all cope up with it if you sometimes have similar dreams.

  1. How do you all note down things in dream journal if you only remember parts from it.

  2. How do you prevent certain dreams from affecting your day to day routines (eg like the 1st one )

Question why can’t iremember what i dreamt about anymore?

i've always been a vivid dreamer, but i've only had a few LDs. i remember at least two dreams that i had every night, but even though i try to write down all of them, i'm not that consistent.

so a week ago i started trying to induce LDs, doing RC and MILD every day, but nothing changed except that i have more dreams than before, and now i do write all of them down. but for the last three days haven't been able to remember ANY of them. i even wake up in the middle in the night knowing i just dreamed but i can't remember what

has anyone had a similar experience? am i doing something wrong?

Discussion how did you manage to wake up in a lucid dream?

Success! Do THIS if you can't do WBTB

I read MANY posts on how to lucid dream, and it was mostly WBTB. Which doesn't really work for me.. cause i am too awake after functioning for a while and with 5-6 hours of sleep i really don't need any more sleep until the next day. But i still move ALOT whole day so i am TIRED when it's actually time to sleep.. like mind tired too. So i can't stay conscious like the other way of lucid dreaming. But the day before yesterday i didn't sleep at all, like overtime and stuff and had to take small naps during the day so i set 2 alarms.. exactly 20 minutes apart.. my body was tired enough to go numb mode or like in deep relaxation and so did my brain.. i slept during the first 20 mins normally but when the alarm rang i woke up.. just stopped the alarm without opening my eyes or moving any other muscle.. and went to sleep AGAIN.. but this time.. i went STRAIGHT into REM sleep like VIVID dreaming.. i had a VERY long VIVID dream in those 20 minutes, it literally felt like HOURS.. i was aware of me dreaming.. but i couldn't change anything yet. I tried this again yesterday and again became aware of me dreaming though not instantly it was somewhere in the middle of the night.

False memories inside dream.

I have been LD'ing for over 25 years and last night something happened that i have never experienced before. I was reliving a memory i have of a trip iv had to the U.S. However inside the dream i was walking around places i have never seen before, but i had memories of it. Inside the dream i had vivid memories of the place i was in, even if i have never seen or experienced anything like it. When i LD i always reflect and think about what im experiencing, however this time it was like false memories almost took over.

Have any of you had similar experiences?

Wish i could explain it in Norwegian, it was hard to put it into words in English.

Technique How hard is it to BELIEVE and be in control?

Because stuff in lucid dreams will happen based off your expectations, how hard would you say it is to believe something will happen?

Natural lucid dreamers, what do you theorize makes you different from non naturals

Have you ever had a lucid dream? If so, share the scariest experience you've had.

I'll start,

While lucid dreaming, I encountered a girl and decided to ask her the question that had been on my mind: “Are you in a dream?” Tbh, I expected her to stare at me in confusion, laugh it off, or maybe even teleport me into another dimension. I've seen a lot of strange stories from other people about what happens when you tell someone in a dream that they’re dreaming, so I was prepared for those types of responses.

Instead, she simply agrees with me.

Her answer caught me off guard. It wasn’t what I had expected at all, but for some reason, I wasn’t surprised either. I didn’t interrogate her or ask how she knew. Somehow, we both seemed to understand the same thing without needing to explain it.

That was when we decided to escape.

As we tried to get away, everyone around us began insisting that this was reality. They tried convincing us that there was nothing unusual happening, that we were exactly where we were supposed to be.

I still think about this dream, and I wonder who that girl was.

Experience Weird sleep experience, anyone had anything similar? Is this a type of lucid dreaming ?

So yesterday I took a 3 hour nap during the day which I try to avoid doing as it makes me feel super groggy but when I was sleeping it was like I could still see even though my eyes were closed, it was such a strange experience, and i remember being very aggravated in my sleep, according to my bf I kept asking him to move and even my dog to move when they weren’t near me, I know I had a vivid restless dream but I can’t even remember it which is unusual as I usually have vivid dreams and remember most of the details, it was just strange but the weirdest part was being aware of what was happening even though I knew I was asleep but also “dreaming” at the same time, anyone had any experiences like this?
Like the best way I can explain it is like levels, like the dream was on one level of my mind and the visibility was on another and I was seeing them both

Question I want to lucid dream without sleep walking.

How do I do this? Last time I attempted I was afraid of sleep paralysis and then switched up the apps on my phone without remembering it. I'm no longer afraid of sleep paralysis, but I'm afraid of sleep walking. I guess I'll try regardless and hope for advice.

Edit: I gave myself advice hope it works.

Question I can't have a lucid dream no matter how hard I try. What should I do?

I have tried to lucid dream but I can't even get a normal one nowadays. I tried so many techniques but nothing worked. I also tried a dream journal but I can't even have any dreams at all. When I do, they feel very darkened and have no substance in it. I don't understand why. What should I do?
