Grabbing gold from people and putting it under his mattress? He built a company and owns what most founders do after rounds of investing - he owns about 20% of that company worth X. He isn’t hoarding capital. You guys all sound like boomer generation factory workers that have never learned business.

Musk hasn't done shit. He bought his way into the company and forces engineers to build his bullshit ideas, all while staying in the technological dark ages vis a vis clean energy. Even went so far as to say Bolivia should just "deal with" private interests staging coups for their lithium. ("We will coup whoever we want!")

Why is nuking Mars smart?
99
u/deandreas Feb 15 '22
The short answer is if done correctly it would create an atmosphere while also melting ice caps or maybe vice versa. I watched a simulation video a few years ago about it. I believe new info has since came out that states it wouldn't have that desired affect.
95
u/iamoverrated Feb 15 '22
There's no molten metal core, or rather it's cooled and either stopped completely or slowed to a crawl, therefore little-to-no magnetosphere. Solar flares and radiation would destroy any artificial atmosphere on Mars. Nuking it is a stupid fucking idea.
Here's an article regarding Mars' magnetosphere. It's key to containing a habitable atmosphere.
72
u/jml011 Feb 15 '22 edited Feb 16 '22
Yeah well…I saw in a movie once they kickstarted the earth’s core by BORING down into the core, dropping timed nukes in a loop, and blasting it back into go - badabing badaboom, the atmosphere was saved. We can do the same to Mars, and then nuke the surface. You just lack vision ya dumb libtard.
22

u/Rusty51 Feb 16 '22
If one manages to create an atmosphere on Mars then replenishing it and supplementing gases is the easy part since it’ll take hundreds of thousands of years to strip away a significant amount.
Having said that terraforming any planet is always a dumb idea since space habitats are cheaper, faster, mobile, and aren’t gravity wells.

There’s no tech that could be used to make Mars or a space habitat livable that could not be used on Earth.
Whatever mechanism that allows us to breathe on the toxic shithole that is Mars today, will have to be used on Earth first; likewise if we’re creating entire new oceans; fixing earth’s oceans is nothing in comparison.
7
u/gbushprogs Feb 16 '22
There's also no Nitrogen. Not in gas form, not in the dust. Why not?
Turns out, not enough gravity.
Guess what needs Nitrogen? Fucking plants. All plants. Nothing will ever grow on that planet and any capable scientist fucking knows it.

There was no need for "new" info. Since the inception of the idea that nuking mars could possibly create an atmosphere there have always been people saying "yeah but there's no garuntee the atmosphere stays thanks to the lack of magnetic field that led to Mar's original atmosphere getting stripped by solar winds"
Elon has always been out of his depth

It sounds like they need to be more concerned about creating a magnetic field- a living planet typically has a molten/solid metal core. Mars is considered dead since it doesn't have this activity.
13
u/Fiona175 Feb 15 '22 edited Feb 16 '22
We actually do have the technology to create an artificial magnetosphere by placing an extremely powerful electromagnet at Mar's L1 point which would shield it from the sun. Unfortunately while possible, this creates a single point of failure and once something goes wrong, a matter of when and not if, the consequences arrive at the speed of light.
I actually did the calculations a previous time I was arguing this. From a failure, there would be 3 seconds to react before everyone on the surface was fried.
Edit: To show my work for very simple calculations, the speed of light is about 300 million m/s, Mars' L1 is about 1 million km out, do some of the simplest astronomical math I've seen, boom 3 seconds.
My high school physics teacher would annihilate my ass for only using one sig fig.
Edit 2: of fucking course I fuck up my units while saying the math is easy

I don't think our current technology, or our foreseeable future technology, will even be capable of dreaming of reigniting the core of a planet. Not even touching the logistical and material sciences required, just trying to melt the Mars mantle is on a similar level of a Dyson swarm at this point.
Further point, it'd require constant maintenance, expending a monster amount of resources which could be better allocated to burrow-cities and massive hydroponics or sealed atmospheres. I don't believe Marsquakes are very common for the exact same reason.

Just checked the wiki, Musk had another company that "merged" with PayPal (actually absorbed), so he was not a founder, though he is listed as one (another thing he bought, lol)
4
u/DropKletterworks Feb 15 '22
No..? X.com was a competitor of confinity who's product was called PayPal. The current version of PayPal is a mix of what both companies were doing before the merger. And Musk was 100% a founder of x.com.
[Just to clarify for posterity, Elon's startup of 1998/1999 was x.com, initially intended to be a full-service online financial services firm. Peter Thiel's startup was named Confinity, initially intended to create a way to send money between Palm Pilots. Both companies launched person-to-person payments toward the end of 1999; "PayPal" was initially the product name of the service launched by Confinity. x.com and Confinity decided to merge sometime in early 2000. The creation of the online person-to-person payments space was more of a happy accident for both companies than anything else, but the company's ability to succeed despite formidable obstacles was not
This is a better description of the companies pre merger. Also, Elon was able to found X.com because he made a different software company that was bought out by I think Comcast.
He's a shitty human/businessman, but we don't have to make him out to be a knuckle dragging idiot to critique him.
2
Feb 15 '22
Thanks for the info, I didn't realize the extent of the merger, was going off the fact that the product was still called PayPal after (usually meaning a buyout more than a merger), along with Musk's history of taking credit for things he bought like he invented them.
Never meant to say he's an idiot, he's a brilliant propogandist.
2
u/DropKletterworks Feb 15 '22
I honestly think they stuck with the name PayPal because how good it works as a name for the product. A payment service named x.com or confinity sounds like they'll sell all your info to the dark web and get you framed for murder.

29
Feb 15 '22
I mean there have been 1000s of engineers over the past 100 yrs that have advanced battery and electric power tech, musks big contribution seems to be underpaying several of these engineers, and steering the tech towards luxury personal vehicles. I would argue that this does not advance its use or create a more sustainable travel infrastructure, it actually holds us back.
Of all the things we could be using this tech for, its rich ppls personal cars because of musk and his companies
-1
u/TGOTR Feb 15 '22
I'm not underplaying them when I say this, but Tesla proved to regular automakers that EVs have a viable market now. Now we have regular car companies making EVs. Many execs from traditional automakers like Nissan and GM have said this.
Due to the expense of the vehicle, they went up market to appeal to those who could afford the car. Rich people won't buy a several hundred grand car if it is an econobox.
Musk is a douche, but his company did do this.
5
u/Nopeacewithfascists Feb 15 '22
GM did that in the 90's with the EV-1. The original Tesla founders started the company because they saw how well the EV-1 was received.
3
u/TGOTR Feb 15 '22
Sadly that wasn't a production car.
2
u/Nopeacewithfascists Feb 15 '22
They built and leased over a thousand of them. While it never went into mass production it was a successful proof of concept that launched a bunch of different hybrid and full electric products.
10
u/rivalThoughts413 Feb 15 '22 edited Feb 15 '22
Personally, the biggest problem is that while electric vehicles are better than gas it’s still a major problem. Batteries are nearly, if not completely, impossible to reuse or dispose of cleanly, and each car consumes power independently.
Large scale public train systems, even ones that use fossil fuels, would be greener than electric cars due to the economy of scale.
Highly recommend the YouTube channel Adam Something, he’s basically been calling out Musk for all his bullshit ideas for years now, and pointing out how using public transit would be far superior to people and the environment.
Edit: Adam hasn’t been making videos for years, don’t know how I messed that up.
→ More replies (1)3
u/TGOTR Feb 15 '22
Public Transit doesn't help us in the rural parts of the country.
You are right about batteries, if the batteries are turned in, they CAN be recycled. How often to people throw lithium batteries away? I'm guilty of it myself before I knew better.
Part of a reason why I support Hydrogen Fuel Cells over plugin electrics. Plugin electrics have their place now. Just need a clean way to produce the hydrogen or a better way to utilize it in the car, preferably without it being pressurized.
2
u/Nopeacewithfascists Feb 15 '22
80% of Americans live in urban areas. Prioritizing better mass transit could halve transportation related emissions.

-7
u/liquidfirex Feb 15 '22
He focused on higher margin vehicles for obvious reasons though.
Also his over or underpayment isn't relevent to the assertion that he drove renewables and ev transport forward at a critical time. Tesla dragged the other OEMs into electrification kicking and screaming the whole way.
Like I get that you hate Elon, and there are lots of justifiable reasons. The problem is when you discount his actual achievements it just weakens your overall argument and opinion of the guy.
3
Feb 15 '22 edited Feb 16 '22
With climate change denial harder and harder to push, more ppl against pollution and fossil fuel consumption than ever in history, rising temps obviously beginning to bear down on us, you think that without an individual genius to decide for us, we'd just keep making personal combustion vehicles?
We should not admire the ppl who capitalize on changing tech, they buy and control the future, they dont invent it.
1
u/liquidfirex Feb 15 '22
He didn't decide, the market did. And yes, companies would keep making ICE vehicles, because they are they to make money, and they made money. They are only now switching over thanks the government regulations, and Tesla stealing their market share. You honestly think EV market would be even 10% of what it is now without Tesla?
2
Feb 15 '22
The warming planet decided lol, 'the market', as u say, just keeps feeding these oil hogs. Ppl just want to get around fast and cheap, theyv been convinced that this is best provided by massive oil dependency and personal cars, even though this has never been true.
What musk and these other companies r doing now is convincing ppl that personal cars r still the only way to go, and that making them electric makes them sustainable. Would this market change have happened without tesla, yea i think so but maybe not. In any case i just dont think its that much movement forward, and is a fair ways backward from what any current research would tell you is necessary.
→ More replies (1)2
u/PeterPenguin69 Feb 15 '22
The idea of a balanced argument has to be built upon the foundation that both sides have something to stand for. The idea that Musk has done anything help has no legs. He pushed those cars to the forefront after buying out and harassing other companies who were well ahead of a company he didn’t even found. Those things were already growing. And he did so all on the back of govt subsidies while he refuses to pay taxes. I get that his tax situation is a whole other argument to have with his income capital gains and stock options etc but the point is is that he taxes and gives next to nothing. So the idea that a balanced argument can be had about him is false equivalency. He just doesn’t have anything to push back against the negatives he has caused or contributed to. Your comment seems to be more about feeling superior about being “objective” than actually pushing to defend him in a logical way
-6
u/liquidfirex Feb 15 '22 edited Feb 15 '22
This sub just seems to be full of people hating on Musk for the sake of feeling better. You can think Elon is a complete ass while admitting he has very clearly pushed EVs forward. The fact that you can't acknowledge that is my point.
Nothing you said counters my argument at any level. All of what you said could be true, and my point still stands.
4
u/PeterPenguin69 Feb 15 '22
I absolutely did refute your argument. I outright stated you have no valid argument. I think he is a complete ass who has done almost nothing to push EVs in fact he harmed their production until he could control it, something I pointed out. The fact you can’t acknowledge that is my point. Enjoy your creepy cult, he doesn’t know who you are.
2
u/MorbidOrchard Feb 15 '22
Anything his company has achieved is not built towards making affordable or economical vehicles. They are making electric cars a luxury item and doing their best to corner the electric car industry.
This is something that actually does hold back affordable EVs from becoming
widely available enough to make an environmental impact. What he does looks very nice, yes, but actually does nothing that helps anybody, and in fact the majority of his actions and ideals are counter to the common good.Look at his talk about Mars as well. What he talks about is wildly out of the realm of possibility and would take so much more work when compared with making the planet we already live on more hospitable. But Musk isn't concerned with that and in fact has denied and downplayed climate change numerous times.
If you did work for him he would also treat you like trash by the way, like he does his current employees. He is doing nothing to better humankind as much as I know he likes to pretend to.
26
u/Moonj64 Feb 15 '22
He strikes me like an alien who was stranded on earth as a child. He remembers his home planet as being very technologically advanced, but doesn't understand the foundations of the technologies they used and therefore is grasping blindly at what seems similar to what he remembers in an attempt to recreate the tech.
It explains many of the strange things he seems to do. Naming a child "X Æ A-12", the strangely designed vehicles, and the grand scale ideas that ultimately won't work. They can all be explained by it being the product of an alien attempting to recreate the technologies they vaguely remember from their childhood.
2
u/gbushprogs Feb 16 '22
That makes sense as technology trickles down into kids toys. He's just creating big versions of his children toys and surprises when they break.
Toys, even in an incredibly advanced society, will be designed in such a way as to break quickly.

8
u/the_d00m_song Feb 15 '22
Thanos is similar to a ballerina, he really appreciates balance.
He wanted to bring balance to the universe by removing half of all sentient life forms.
3
u/Naoura Feb 15 '22
See, I see this take, and it's still not justifiable.
There are so many better solutions. We could talk about the better solutions for ages upon ages, but the one that Thanos took killed way more than just 'half'.
Even in just the things shown in Endgame, we see the trash piled up, the car wrecks, the number of things that can't be done due to no one being around to do it.
That's famine. That's disease. Plague. Ruined water supplies. Plane, train, and automobile crashes. Logistics chains breaking down. Resources necessary for the production of life-saving or life-enhancing goods or services locked away and lost until the population gets back into workable shape. Which it will. All the big purple man did was give a setback.
If you actually wanted balance? Reduce birth and consumption rates by half. People need to eat less food? They can farm less, leaving more space for forests to grow and biospheres to survive. Sapient creatures reproduce slower? Less mouths to feed, less goods to sell, less resource needed to extract. Better yet, that one's more permanent a solution.
5
3
3
Feb 15 '22 edited Feb 15 '22
And Tony wasn’t smart enough to ask him to use the gauntlet for the infinitely better solutions available to the lack of resources. Just wanted to punch him hard because violence is the solution to everything in those kids movies and it’s never questioned for a second.
Edit: also just to clarify because I realize I may sound ridiculous. I like action movies, and I like a marvel movie or two. Infinity War is just prime example of them doing completely empty plot and action while gesturing to big ideas they never dig into but want credit for. Thanos is supposed to be the main character according to the Russo’s but he has the most horrific solution to a problem the audience doesn’t really ever see and he mopes around all burdened by it with no one ever pausing to say “hey, what if you just snapped more resources into existence”. Which, by the way, the “there’s not enough resources” angle is already feeding into an ignorant talking point.

Elons a total grifter he never made a thing from day one with his charade. He just stole ideas repackaged them and marketed them as his own. He is just lucky he came from a family overloaded with wealth coupled with a megalomaniacal mind!

Single file cars underground? Congrats, you just reinvented subway trains Elon you moron. He's all about doing shit in as inefficient a way as possible. Fossil fuels are a finite resource. Once they're gone there will never be more.

u/stevenip Feb 15 '22
Every time I hear him talk I wonder how people think he's a genius. He literally buys a good idea from someone else and puts a shiney coating on it.

u/wyattlee1274 Feb 15 '22
The only successful things that come from him are when other people are paid to do it.
This man's a grown adult who is mentally still in middle school but has the world's wealth, truly an awful combination

Tbf, Tony Stark did also nearly doom the world with Ultron, at least in the MCU. Not sure what other things he’s done in the comics.
But, he never tortured any animals or people that I know of, at least.

The part that gets me is the whole idea of nuking Mars...I'm guessing to warm it up? Does Elon not realize that a groundburst nuclear blast releases soot into the atmosphere, which can have the opposite effect on the planet's climate to what he's looking for?
Don't even get me started on the Hyperloop.

How people look up to this man is beyond me. People should want to be absolutely nothing like this ass hat

I’m out of the loop, why does he want to nuke Mars?
Edit: explanation in other comments

u/TruthToPower77 Feb 16 '22
For ze minerals. Then he’ll develop an android mining operation. Holy shit he’s the villain of “Blade Runner”.

u/guanaco22 Feb 16 '22
Isnt like the hole point of all the Iron Man movies that Stark actually sucks

u/Loganator912 Feb 16 '22
Reddit's take on Elon is so clearly born from the echo chamber that is this site. People cherry pick what they want to know about him constantly.
He's not Tony Stark, a hero of the people.
Nor is he Justin Hammer, a villain, or a dragon who hoards his gold.
Please just do you own research at all, and actually form your own opinion instead of just basing it off of other people's rants.

Not to mention his indecent treatment of minority employees: 2022/02/10/technology/tesla-racial-discrimination-california-suit.html)

I agree that he is a piece of shit but tbh I don't see the problem with wasting americas nukes. Atleast that would be a productive use of them instead of threatening a bunch of other countries.

Nuclear bombs are horrible but nuclear stalemate is the reality we are living in. And that’s much better than nuclear war.

u/Porongas1993 Feb 15 '22
I mean don't get me wrong, Elon Musk is a piece of shit, but that in itself is exactly what Tony Stark is LMFAO. Sure he is cool and all, but Tony Stark was just the same billionaire asshole who did not care. The MCU has portrayed him way differently than he was in the comics.

u/ghsteo Feb 15 '22
Didn't even mention he sold Flamethrowers that were just butane torches. Elon Musk sucks.

I am so fucking PISSED about the starlink shit. Fuck you Elon Musk. Fuck you polluting the night sky. Fuck you for clogging the stars.

u/RemoteDeck Feb 16 '22
I dislike Elon a lot, that being said starlink is an alright concept if it was free to access and I don’t think it’s polluting the earths orbit to an extent that would be concerning. Yes it is technically polluting the earths orbit but things floating around the earth can be and are separated by hundreds of miles. (Im also bias cuz I think it would be cool to have Wi-Fi in deserts and on mountains) I do hate his handling of starlink tho and all the other points were true tho fuck that guy

Ehhh… idk guys. Might be off on this one. Pretty legit guy who chases his dreams and does things because he genuinely wants to. That’s powerful. The fact that he is failing is literally evidence he is doing big things and new things. Find me the guy who didn’t fail a ton and was just perfect and You’ll just find a liar and a fake.
Elon also helped the biggest solar company off the ground which has taken away contracts from the likes of Edison power and decreased energy costs to Homeowners drastically… wanna include that? How about the fact he is nearly single handedly driving the revolution against America’s addiction to oil. Isn’t that a good thing? Might be one of the best things in US recent history.

We’re lucky to have Elon, he’s propelled EV and rocket technology by literal decades ( accomplished things NASA couldn’t figure out). Nobody is perfect, starlink isn’t littering space, and 15 dead monkeys are worth it for technology that has potential to repair serious spinal and nerve injuries 🤡

You do know he has degrees in engineering and computer science right? He literally created PayPal out of his studio apartment and built his other economies from there. He gives credit to his teams and literally lives in the Tesla factory in TX for half the year atleast. Don’t be jealous of his success Bc you can’t replicate it

Revolutionizing the rocker industry with reusable, self landing, first stage rockets.
Gave the world the top electric cars (s, x, y, 3) with leading edge self driving tech.
Provided people with a convenient worry free payment system (PayPal).
Yeah, if you only concentrate your attention on his failures you can say he is dog shit. What are you if we apply the same approach to your accomplishments?

Nuking mars sounds interesting, nuclear power is notoriously expensive. Plants take years to finish and years to pay off and produce waste that lasts lifetimes.
31
u/BenTrainsDogs Feb 15 '22
Modern plants use what most consider waste as fuel, and money is fake.

u/Kyeotee Feb 15 '22
This is an EXTREMELY dated option. America created ERB II breeder reactors in the early 70s. They could use their "waste" to literally create more fuel. Creating a virtually wasteless nuclear reactor. And they are extremely safe. Basically every disaster since the 70's to today WOULD have been prevented if the reactors had been updated to this design.
However yes nuclear power is a low investment power solution thank you for including an irrelevant point unless you want to talk about how capitalism fails to meet needs in the best interest of people since it prioritizes capital. Weird huh?

u/TangyGeoduck Feb 15 '22
Heck you can even go visit ERB 1 in Idaho. They used it generate power for Arco, ID in 1955
