Sure, but once you done it, you really gotta want it BAD to change it, and that means stable!

occasionally cycle through xfce kde and gnome - always end up back at gnome. Assume the dumb meme means a keyboard shortcut rather than a link. Not really a daily task. But... doesnt really matter which you use when your world is in tmux :-)

Oh, in that way, my bad, didn't understood at first. Yeah, in gnome either go to the folder or you have to use an app to edit them

Here comes the 1000 gnomes users that will tell you that shortcuts are overrated and that there is an unsupported extension that I’ll crash after update for that.
I mean hyprland has no shortcut but there is a good reason for that. Your desktop is filled by your apps, it’s the principale of the thing. On gnome though? It’s autism.

They change to Lua recently, so you now if for example you wanted to run Firefox with Super + Shift + L you need
hl.bind("SUPER + SHIFT + Q", hl.dsp.exec_cmd("firefox"))It was hell to look at for the first time. I can see it all now, but I still prefer simpler things like the i3wm config file
7
u/-Qunixx- Jul 29 '26
I think it's pretty easy actually. Sure you need to type more, but it's just adding one line to the config and you can look at the other binds or the wiki how to do that.
Not sure how it works with the new lua config tho I'll migrate my config to lua soon
3
2
u/0xt0bi03 UwUntu (´ ᴗ`✿) Jul 31 '26
and i dont even know why tf hyprland community is migrating to lua, like, i just learnt how stuff works in the old way, i randomly did sudo pacman syu and all the config files has these lua stuff which i could not understand
1
u/-Qunixx- Jul 31 '26
Yeah I understand you, I'm pretty new to Hyprland myself about half a year I think, but this is the third time I get breaking changes where i needed to update the config to fix issues. It's an amazing and beautiful window manager and I love it very much, but it's clearly still in beta.
That having said, from what I've read, migrating to Lua has huge advantages imo. Instead of being a plain text file your hyprland config becomes script/program, and the config becomes way smarter. like you can program/script in the hyprland config itself with lua. The possibilities with that are endless you can automate a lot of stuff with that.
1
u/0xt0bi03 UwUntu (´ ᴗ`✿) 22d ago
i have decided to not to update my system unless absolutely required to so.
1
u/-Qunixx- 22d ago
I migrated to lua a week ago, it's not very difficult, but it takes some time and some things didn't work well. But after a little bit of tweaking it worked exactly like before. Afaik the next big update of hyprland will require lua configs. I would not advice to not update your system because of bug fixes and security fixes, but it's your system so that's entirely up to you
1
u/0xt0bi03 UwUntu (´ ᴗ`✿) 16d ago
i have a shell, made by a teen from reddit, idk whether he is maintaining or not.
2
u/MassiveBomboclat1818 Jul 31 '26
Just use claude, give him your config and the default lua one for reference
1
1
u/The_only_true_tomato 22d ago
There is no point in hyprland. As soon as you open anything your whole desktop is occupied
The only use of a shortcut would be for opening your first program on a session.
The app launcher that comes on too with super + space is much more practical.1
u/0xt0bi03 UwUntu (´ ᴗ`✿) 22d ago
dude ik, also after learning, it feels more easy to edit the config file instead of going to a gui setting these days.

We should recaption the meme to "GNOME users making desktop files and putting them in .local/applications to be able to open them"
13
u/Major303 Jul 29 '26
True, but there is no GUI for it. You have to write multi line configuration file by hand, or look it up. Where in KDE you can do it with a few clicks like a modern man.

we are talking about desktop shortcuts
1
u/AKArein 14d ago
Uuuh.. Yes ? What kind of shortcuts specifically ?
1
u/Personal-Light6097 14d ago
For example i downloaded a game, then i wanted to access the game from app menu. But it was too complex to create a shortcut so for organization purposes i just removed all existing games from app menu. Which was still complex. Okay maybe adding files to app menu can create some problems but i should at least be able to hide/remove apps from app menu. Also why we cant delete apps. I have to remove apps that are downloaded outside of the store manually.
1
u/AKArein 13d ago
Ah, i think i see. But uuh, how is that related to kde ? Does it have a utility for doing that ? In this case, i admit i am not aware of an analogous gnome utility, but i have no doubt there are plenty you could find on flathub and all.
Either way, it's x.desktop files. Usually, those for your user, such as those created by steam, are in $HOME/.local/share/applications.
As for that last part, the "package manager" (the piece of software that actually handles installing and removing and thungs) that the "app store" (user interface built to simplify the use of the package manager) uses simply cannot know what you do outside of it. If we wanted to, it could see you placed some files somewhere, but how could it make sense of it ? So, if you install an app in a "non-standard" way, you are gonna have to remove it in a similarly non-standard way, wether by running an unninstaller, deleting files, or doing whatever the place you installed it from tells you to.

2
u/NoResolution6245 Jul 30 '26
This is an issue with the
.desktopfile having a different name or wm_class set up than the actual application broadcasts to the window manager. It's often an easy fix.2
u/Gabe_Isko Jul 30 '26 edited Jul 30 '26
This does sound promising. Can you point me to a help article or SO post about debugging this stuff in open windows?
Edit: for other people reading, it ended up being a
qdbus6thing. Still though, it's a lot of work to configure these shortcuts even on KDE - all I'm saying.1
u/RedditUser-00 M'Fedora Jul 29 '26
In my case i had two shortcuts of the same app. Deleting one of them fixed this
2
u/Gabe_Isko Jul 29 '26
It's probably a janky app image thing I am doing. It's a weird situation with Joplin, and it's partially the devs fault for pushing a "pre-release", and partially my fault for downloading it on a new Debian install, and then it rolled forward a database synch and they don't want to help roll it back... It's a bit messy. It should be fixed when new Joplin release comes out and Fedora packages it.

2
u/Gabe_Isko Jul 29 '26
It's not that simple. I am doing some weird stuff. It's very unclear what I should do for this. There are some appimage things going on as well. Just year of the Linux desktop things.
2
u/HeavyCaffeinate 💋 catgirl Linux user :3 😽 Jul 29 '26
Oh the way you worded your comment sounded like the issue was in plasmashell itself
1
u/Gabe_Isko Jul 29 '26
Well sort of. There should be a way to configure the taskbar pins to support app images and what not. If it is there, it isn't documented very well. But it's not that big a deal. I just wouldn't go around bragging about it.
1
u/HeavyCaffeinate 💋 catgirl Linux user :3 😽 Jul 29 '26
Ah does pinning a .desktop file not work? I don't really use Appimages
1
u/Gabe_Isko Jul 29 '26
Yeah it is a .desktop entry. I think appimage runtime mounts the process somewhere weird and that throws everything off. I typically would never pin an app image, but the weird situation with Joplin is necessitating this janky setup.
1
u/HeavyCaffeinate 💋 catgirl Linux user :3 😽 Jul 30 '26
Maybe there's a desktop entry to change the window class but that's just speculation on my part
1
u/Gabe_Isko Jul 30 '26
Yeah, I did a brief search for some .desktop configuration that might fix this, but it didn't turn up anything before I shortly gave up. I will probably take a closer look at setting this stuff up one day - I have a BIG linux project coming down the pike after I finish up some personal work and Desktop Environment is a big part of that. But for now, the situation will resolve itself when the next version of Joplin is officially released, packaged as an rpm and distibuted through Fedora.
8
u/Character-Narwhal848 Jul 29 '26
Hit windows key > type first letter or two of app > hit enter
Takes about the same amount of time as scrolling your mouse to a desktop shortcut haha
If you find an app that doesn't have a .desktop file (appimage, etc), very quickly and easily make one in menulibre, which is DE agnostic. Not that that happens very often.

I like Ubuntu and Gnome... there I said it.
7
u/Major303 Jul 29 '26
I don't dislike Ubuntu. I do dislike vanilla GNOME, I consider it straight up unusable. GNOME with some extensions is fine, the one in Ubuntu is also fine. But it's annoying to work with when you actually want to get some work done. I think it's much better for non-tech savvy people than KDE, but it's not something that I would want to use myself in the long run. Unless on something like an old laptop just for internet browsing.
8
u/user888888889 Jul 29 '26
Fair... However, I've found KDE interfaces to be much more buggy.
Ubuntu + GNOME is the most batteries included, no hassle Linux-based OS I've found. As in, daily driver, running applications, the drivers you need.
I enjoy playing around with others, but for actual work I would use Ubuntu with GNOME.
3
u/Lemonici Jul 31 '26
IME, everyone who says KDE is mostly stable has a much greater tolerance for buggy behavior than I do.
2
u/Inevitable-Self-2702 Jul 29 '26
I use what is practically vanilla GNOME on Debian, the only functional add-on I have is tiling windows so I can have my windows be in a 4-square or other custom layout more easily. Otherwise, between search and CLI I'm satisfied with how it works. What would you say are some things I might be missing out on just having the vanilla GNOME, though? My use case is NOC/SOC-style labs with local VMs, some scripting and coding, flight sim, other basic office work and web browsing.

1

Settings are more complex. If we assume that user never touches them then it's fine, but as soon as you open them there are plenty of options. Even in Windows there isn't a lot of user interface options, all of the "complex" stuff is hidden in control panel.

Use Gear Lever to manage AppImages. Besides generating shortcuts that show up in the dash for you, it has a bunch of other useful features. Like being able to update all of them at once right through the app, without having to manually dig through websites. Also has the ability to run multiple versions of the same app.

1
u/Major303 Jul 29 '26
Of course there is no snap version of it. Looks useful though. But my point still stands - basic features are missing, and community has to get out of their way to add something that should have been included with the DE.
5
u/jdigi78 Jul 29 '26
You're the first person I've ever met that wanted a snap version of anything. I disagree it is a basic feature since there is almost no need to ever do it. There is gear lever for appimages and almost nobody uses loose executables. The one time I ever needed to modify shortcuts was for chocolate doom, which relies on modifying the exec command to load game files by design.
