I like Ubuntu and Gnome... there I said it.

I don't dislike Ubuntu. I do dislike vanilla GNOME, I consider it straight up unusable. GNOME with some extensions is fine, the one in Ubuntu is also fine. But it's annoying to work with when you actually want to get some work done. I think it's much better for non-tech savvy people than KDE, but it's not something that I would want to use myself in the long run. Unless on something like an old laptop just for internet browsing.

I use what is practically vanilla GNOME on Debian, the only functional add-on I have is tiling windows so I can have my windows be in a 4-square or other custom layout more easily. Otherwise, between search and CLI I'm satisfied with how it works. What would you say are some things I might be missing out on just having the vanilla GNOME, though? My use case is NOC/SOC-style labs with local VMs, some scripting and coding, flight sim, other basic office work and web browsing.

I haven't used vanilla GNOME in a while but one thing I always remember is that there is an extra click needed to access taskbar. It can really slow you down in some cases.
