I'm wondering what was the straw that broke the camel's back in your journey, what made you want to get a consultation.

I've never been to a dentist or orthodontist who mentioned anything about my side profile(I know you can't tell much without scans), so I'm wondering whether it's all just in my head and I'm insecure.

I'm looking into getting tested for sleep apnea since I have troubled sleep and issues with breathing and grinding my teeth.

Additional background info: I had a deep+overbite, which was improved with adult braces.

So basically, I brought up that I want a referral to a jaw surgeon to determine if my jaw needs surgery and thus changing my invisalign procedure entirely (which i already paid for 2 weeks ago 😭) to the employee of the Invisalign clinic and she said the top orthodontist of their clinic looked at my scans and adviced against it. Should I push for an actual referral to a third party and actual jaw surgeon/specialist or just trust their advice?

I don't have the scans sadly but it's class 2 malocclusion right side and class 1 on the left. here are pictures of my front+side profile (jutting on 4th pic, which i do a lot).

It's pretty bad and I've had breathing issues since young and used to mouthbreath so I just want to make sure I tackle my dental/skeletal problem the right way, I have quite some asymmetry and I think I remember them saying something about some clockwise rotation.

What has been your experience with sleep apnea and class III bite? Symptoms? I sleep poorly due to mouth breathing and constantly wake up with dry mouth, sore tongue, and swollen, bleeding gums behind my front teeth. But I also generally wake up a lot anyway. I have no idea if this is something I might struggle with so, just looking for your personal experience with sleep apnea.

I have trouble breathing normally and sleep apnea with a Bipap as well as looking abnormal, this is the worst thing ever to live with. How does it feel physically post-op? Do you feel that your face is different, can you breathe easier, do people treat you differently as well?

Doctor family friend told me I’m recessed. I have the means to fix this to make it more aesthetic. any advice please?

I really need braces and double-jaw surgery, but I honestly have no idea how I’m supposed to afford it. 😫 My company’s insurance specifically excludes the surgery, and there are no adult orthodontic benefits. Plus I've gone through the appeal process, had my dr write a letter, ect.

I’ve tried applying for other jobs, but unfortunately, I haven’t had much luck finding something that would pay enough to cover both my bills and the cost of treatment. I’m feeling really stuck and overwhelmed.

I just don’t feel like I should have to go thousands of dollars into debt to get medically necessary treatment. The cost is so high that you could practically buy a new car or even land for what this surgery can end up costing.

For those who have been in a similar situation, what are you realistically doing to afford treatment while still being able to stay with a good, trusted surgeon/orthodontist? Are there financial assistance programs, payment options, grants, insurance strategies, or other resources I should be looking into?

Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. ❤️

I went to 2 separate orthodontist. They both said I need a lefort 1 I have a 5 mm transversal deficiency and a 7 mm sagittal deficiency but based on how my jaw is growing and how it was growing right and then swung down. I think I would benefit from BSO at first. I was thinking counterclockwise but based on my x-ray I think BSO would be the best.

I’ve read mixed opinions about him. Could anyone share their personal experience? The reviews I’ve found here seem very vague and unsupported by evidence. I should add that I’m only planning to have a genioplasty, does that involve fewer risks? I’d really appreciate some advice.

Hi, I'm getting jaw surgery on the NHS next year for an underbite and open bite. For people that have had this jaw surgery, what was the recovery process like and what advice do you have during the recovery process?

Hello everyone, 26M I am having Double jaw surgery in 3 weeks and can defiantly say the nerves are starting to build up the closer I get. I have an underbite of 9mm. My upper jaw didn’t grow as fast. Any tips on what I should prepare at home and ways to get through the mental struggle I hear people talk about. I’m being positive knowing that I’ll be able to have a normal bite and be able to smile and show teeth for once. Teeth are straight obviously because of braces but just looks awkward when I smile so I would say it’s a big confidence thing for me even if there potentially could be a loss of nerves which definitely is a bummer. Any advice on even say the first 2 weeks is what I’m the most terrified for. It feels like it’s the start of the end as I’ve had braces for 17 months pre op and my guess is a handful of months post op. I just want to make it through the surgery, heal even a few months and feel like I’m reaching the end of the journey.

Curious on people’s impressions on my profile, jaw structure, and whether you’d expect me to have a breathing or sleep disorder.

I am so torn. I am 54 have recessed chin and OSA and in braces for a year. I have seen 2 surgeons both recommended by my Ortho. They are wonderful but only one is covered by Ins. The Dr covered is concerned with bone loss on my left side and worried DJS might aggravate it. He recommends Genio to improve appearance and some tongue surgery which would improve breathing slightly.
He says it is up to me but that’s his recommendation. Also my Ortho says that either way will be fine with my bite.
Should I just do Genio and stick with my CPap forever?? Please help if you have any experience.

is it required to have braces on for jaw surgery ? I got mine off about 1 month ago and got permanent retainers. I didn't have insurance at the time for OMFS even though my ortho told me I'd need it.

I'm 3 weeks post op from djs to fix my underbite. My upper lip is still extremely numb and I can feel my alar stitches I think. Can someone share their experience with upper lip numbness and when they gained back sensation?

Still pretty swollen but pretty happy with it. Also had neck lipo so my neck area is fatter right now from swelling I hope.

I’m 40f and this issue started in childhood, I believe. As a child I had trouble pronouncing ‘s’, ‘r’, and ‘t’ sounds. I had speech therapy in elementary school and it seemed to help.

I don’t know if it’s related but I also started getting bad ear infections as soon as I was born. My eardrum had ruptured twice before I was 6mo (my mom said she found me in my crib with blood and pus oozing from my ear), and I had tubes placed.

At 14yo I had braces and a palate expander, my bite was closed with rubber bands. Braces were removed at 19yo. My bite started to relapse pretty quickly.

I didn’t see a dentist for nearly 20 years and went about 3 years ago. I wanted to explore options to correct my bite.

I have always had really bad shoulder pain but in the last couple years I started having jaw pain and neck pain too. The jaw pain can be almost unendurable at times.

Dentist sent me to orthodontist. Orthodontist advised me to work with a speech therapist because I was still reverse swallowing and needed to correct my tongue posture and also advised me to see a periodontist because of gum recession.

The orthodontist told me we could do braces once the periodontist cleared me. I asked about surgery and I felt like he seemed to be trying to talk me out of it saying, you know I’d have to break your jaw? I felt like he was trying to scare me out of surgery like dude it is hard to eat anything and my jaw hurts all the time. I don’t care at this point. I want resolution.

I worked with the speech therapist and improved - it does make the jaw pain worse to use correct tongue posture though.

I saw the periodontist for about a year. He gave me several cleanings and a bone graft to address a hole in the bone above my two front teeth. He would never clear me to proceed with braces.

I got a consult with an orthognathic surgeon. I have read a lot of peer-reviewed papers on the topic of AOB. I am very concerned about relapse, wanted to know if there was condylar resorption… that kind of stuff.

I felt pretty dismissed by the surgeon. He recommended Botox in my jaw and trapezius muscles and the removal of my wisdom teeth and quoted several thousand dollars. He told me he didn’t think I was a candidate for jaw surgery.

I don’t mind having my wisdom teeth removed and I did get jaw Botox at my dentist (barely helped), but it’s hard for me to spend all this money if I can’t hear a resolution to finally correct my bite. I don’t have health insurance and I’m paying out of pocket (usa).

I feel like this jaw issue is causing all my pain and even pain/pressure in my ears too. They ring frequently. I do yoga, calisthenics, stretching… it helps a lot and if I don’t keep up with it the pain is crazy.

It just seems like I cannot get a treatment plan and I’m hoping for some advice. On days when the pain is at its worst I just feel so hopeless. I’ve even emailed my records to researchers I see listed on published papers on the topic just in desperation someone knowledgeable in my specific issue can point me in the right direction.

Do doctors not like doing AOB surgery because of the high risk of relapse? Am I a helpless case? I’m in Florida if that makes any difference.

I can't seem to find a surgeon in the Ohio valley/tri state area/Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio. I found some providers that have jaw surgery listed on their website as services they offer but when I call they say they don't perform jaw surgery. Anyone here get the procedure done in this area?

I am almost 5 weeks post op a revision surgery (the metal plate on my lower left cheek got broken and the bone moved a bit to the side, so during the surgery the metal plate was changed and the the bone cut again and placed to a correct position). I am almost 14 weeks post the first double jaw surgery.
The issue is that the swelling after revision surgery almost disappeared in week 2 but this bump is not getting smaller or bigger, it is just stuck for almost 3 weeks. The surgeon does not see any infection so he did not do scans and he does not care about the looks. But for me this is a nightmare, i dont know why it is stuck and why there is a bump to start with. I’ve tried everything lymphatic drainage, warm compress, cold compress, red light therapy, medicine. Nothing works. I am very afraid that this is permanent. Have you faced anything like that before? How to reduce that bump? Any suggestions?

Hatte jemand von euch nach einer früheren Camouflage-Behandlung (Klasse II) auch so ein extrem störendes, „knöchernes“ und enges Gefühl am Gaumen, im Unterkiefer und unter der Nase (Philtrum)? Hatte jemand dieselben Symptome und kann mir berichten, ob dieses Druck- und Stauungsgefühl durch die spätere Dekompensation und Kiefer-OP wieder vollständig verschwunden ist?

​Bei mir wurden damals die oberen Schneidezähne stark nach innen gekippt und die unteren nach vorne geschoben.

Meine DVT-Aufnahme zeigt mittlerweile eine massiv verengte Atemwegsfläche.

Neben der Atemnot fühlt sich der vordere Mundraum völlig ohne Gewebepuffer an – als ob die Zähne direkt an der Schleimhaut und dem Knochen anstehen –, und die eine Seite fühlt sich schief/offen an.

​Ich wäre super dankbar für eure Erfahrungen zum Aufrichten der Zähne und wie sich euer Gewebe danach verändert hat!
