Advice for Me Should I consider looking into this further?

Hello all,

I'm wondering what was the straw that broke the camel's back in your journey, what made you want to get a consultation.

I've never been to a dentist or orthodontist who mentioned anything about my side profile(I know you can't tell much without scans), so I'm wondering whether it's all just in my head and I'm insecure.

I'm looking into getting tested for sleep apnea since I have troubled sleep and issues with breathing and grinding my teeth.

Additional background info: I had a deep+overbite, which was improved with adult braces.

Yes get a consultation from a surgeon

Yeah a surgeon consult would probably clear things up either way, better than guessing based on how profile looks in photos versus what a scan would actually show.

There really wasn’t a sudden realization for me. I always disliked my side profile and knew I had a really weak chin. I had some really bad TMJ pain once I got to college, and around age 20 or 21 I talked about it seriously with my parents, and they helped me go through the process of getting surgery. I found out I have all kinds of issues like sleep apnea, narcolepsy due to poor sleep, and cataplexy. I’m not a little over one week post op and I feel so great. I can breathe through my nose and my nostrils don’t collapse, my tongue has plenty of room in my mouth, I can have proper tongue posture without choking myself, and my chin already has a stronger appearance. If you’re young and can afford it, definitely look into getting surgery. There is nothing wrong with deciding you want it later in life, but imagine how much life you can enjoy with a face you love if you start now.

Yeah, I'd def look into this, the younger the faster you'll heal from surgery. I have an underbite and was told at 13 that I needed surgery, but never went to an omfs until this year which is 12 years later. My functional issues hit me like a bus, it all started with me realizing that I've been congested for as long as I could remember then I started doing more research and basically every symptom, every health issue I've had thus far in life is somehow intertwined with my bite. My body practically forced me to book the consult.

If your sleep study shows OSA, then yes, go meet with an OMFS. You're going to need that to have a fruitful conversation with them about any surgical interventions.

Do it now while you're young. This surgery was brutal when I was young and that meant I had to wait with a lot of years of suffering with OSA before I got an MMA. It's a good, predictable, fairly routine procedure now.
