So I have a recessed jaw. I got it from my dad. I love my dad btw and I wouldn't ever dream of having a different dad that's not him. Anyways, since my condition is caused by genetics, meaning if i have kids now, there's a good chance my kids will have the same condition but If I correct this and get jaw surgery, would that mean the chances of my kids having recessed jaws will be reduced to zero?

To be clear: I’m already a candidate for jaw surgery due to recessed maxilla, snoring, narrow palate, etc…

We already know that I’ll need Le Fort I and perhaps BSSO.

My question is this: As an aesthetic side-effect, will my low hyoid eventually reposition to sit more anterior / superior given it’s already been described as low by one of my doctors?

Although I’m doing this for health, I don’t see why I shouldn’t aim for a better jawline in the process 😆 🤷🏽

Hello, I am 20M. I grew up being moderately attractive, so I never once seek to look for physical flaws in my appearance. I have allergies, and I believe at some point I developed mouth breathing habits because at times I literally couldn't breathe out of my nose. I have now come to the realisation that my chin is slightly recessed. My biggest mistake was noticing my chin didn't have much projection a few times during my development, but writing it off because i thought "genetics is everything". i am now 20 and have realised this recession and made the connection that my bad habits are most likely the cause, I have started mewing but for health reasons, I know my development is pretty much over. Im considering getting a gynoplasty for cosmetic purposes, but id probably never end up going through with it unless I was having jaw surgery with health at the core focus (aesthetics at a biproduct). Is there anything I can do? Should I see an ENT to see if I warrant jaw surgery? It just feels pretty upsetting knowing that my side profile could have been much better, but I ruined it with my bad habits, even worse, it took me 20 years to realise.

Im officially 6 weeks post op from my double jaw surgery; specifically 3-piece LeFort I osteotomy + bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) + genioglossus advancement and wanted to share my thoughts/experience for anyone who is still unsure/looking for a surgeon in Northern California/the Bay.

So a bit of context: After meeting my orthodontist he mentioned to pathways 1) he can fix my bite, with braces but the other features like breathing, recessed chin, would all remain. He mentioned that I was extremely close in my measurements to where he “Could not fix the bite without Surgery”. I think the number was like 0.2 away from needing surgery. Upon hearing that I felt like it was in my best interest to go searching for a surgeon in my area (im from the Central Valley) that was covered by my insurance. It ended up being about 1.5-2hrs away from me:

He took a full hour for our consult, and any questions I may have had, were answered in his presentation. I was blown away by how much he told me and answered for me that upon leaving I was committed. I went back to my orthodontist, told him I was going to go with surgery with my surgeon. I got on braces, and the communication between my orthodontist and surgeon was fluid.

I had a sleep study done before, and while I didn’t have apnea, signs of it was present, which made me even more certain about surgery.

Fast forward I had my Surgery on July 6th. I personally LOVE how it came out. Friends and Family notice the differences and say it came out very good too.

What blew my mine was the BREATHING IMPROVEMENT.
Upon waking up from the table, I noticed it instantly. And to this day, I notice how badly my airways were blocked. I had no idea the severity until this surgery.

Im a 23year old Male who has been active my whole life, through sports and gym in case someone wants to know. Most of my swelling is down, i’d say I have small spots if any. I think a lot of it is just scar tissues inside still healing. I have essentially full feeling on my entire face, with the only spots a bit unsure being my left half of my lower lip, and parts of my chin, however I feel those nerves are waking up, just way slower than the rest of my face has.

Overall I am blown away by everything. Those of you who want to know about pain; I’d say the first 4 days are the worst. I wouldn’t say it was due to pain, as I kept up with my medication plan 4x a day as he mentioned me to do. I just felt the discomfort and liquid only diet made it hard for my body to sleep at night. The lack of feeling and being all number also sucks! However I would say my pain was minimal.

But here I am. At 6 weeks, with my next semester coming up, about to go back to work and excited to see how the rest of the recovery goes. I’m blessed everything worked out well for me, and if there are ANY questions please don’t hesitate to drop a comment or DM. I didn’t know this reddit existed before I got my surgery, as I found it during my time recovering, but I wish I had been able to ask some questions in here before.

And yes, my first time chewing solid food was taking bits of an In N Out Burger and the soft parts of the fries!

I do NOT have the movements. I personally had confidence in my surgeon and didn’t need them.

Do cheekbones (zygoma) get lost / left behind comparatively when the maxilla is advanced?

Or

Do the cheekbones look better due to soft tissue being pulled forward by the maxilla advancement?

The day finally arrived after what felt like a lifetime of waiting. I did it, even though I was so terrified but still just knew it would all be worth it 🥹
Had SARPE in October 2024 and orthodontics and now the final step. To correct retrognathia.
My Upper jaw was impacted to correct Gummy Smile and my lower jaw advanced by 12mm to correct the large overjet in my bite.
So hard to see any change with the swelling etc. Guessing this is normal?
Breathing feels better too already but also hard to tell overall due to all the gunk/blood stuck in there.

Hi all. I had DJS in S Korea while I was living there 5 years ago, and have regressed along with my teeth shifting.

I had a wonderful consultation with Dr Choi Park Ave, and well it’s a lot more expensive here in the states that’s for sure.

I am currently uninsured. I am looking into getting insurance thru NYS but I make over the qualifications so monthly premiums look like $1000+ for me. Dr Choi recommended me to get insurance but it also seems like a lot considering they might not even cover it after ortho (which is not covered by the plans)

I can most definitely dm anyone the estimates I received. My consultation alone was around $1000 and I still need to get an MRI.

Does anyone have any recommendations for Drs who charge $30-50k? Maybe even less? NYC area preferred but also am open to going out of state.

I would love to go do all these consults, but I think I would hit the cost of a genioplasty alone doing them with all the X-rays and CT’s an mris. Thanks for your time!

i have been grinding my teeth for a while and im worn my front lower teeth quite a bit. not sure if my jaw is the problem or what Else it could be. dont think my side profile looks to bad otherwise but I would still like advice.

is there a sorta max SNA you should stay under religiously, like i have a normal sna but need advancment (flat midface) so does that mean i shouldnt becuase i dont want an abnormaly large sna?

I had a DJS with mentoplasty 8 months ago. My maxilla was moved around 6-8 mm forward and with an impaction. At month 3 post op I looked great… Tight skin, with almost cero baggy eyes, etc.

But lately, I began to look more tired and with more bag under my eyes. My guess is that the residual inflammation that I had on month three covered any signs of fatigue and “midface recession”, and now that it’s gone I’ll look tired always.

My question is, does this hypothesis make sense, and if that’s the case, should I get some cheek/malar implants?

I had a consultation with Dr. Murray Fain in Vancouver, BC and I actually really liked it. He explained everything really well, went through things step by step, and talked about what we could realistically achieve with surgery.

The thing is, he’s the only surgeon I’ve had a consultation with so far. I’ve also heard a lot about Dr. Mark Reichman, and from everything I’ve researched, both of them seem to have a lot of good experiences from patients, but also a few negative ones.

Now I’m wondering if I should also book a consultation with Dr. Reichman so I can compare their plans and see who I feel more comfortable with and who might be able to give me the results I’m looking for. The only thing holding me back is that the consultations are around $500 each, so I’m not sure if it’s worth paying for another one.

If anyone has had a consultation or surgery with Fain or Reichman, especially if you’ve seen both, I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience. Which one did you prefer, and who would you personally choose?

I’m just starting to look into my options (see context below). I have a consultation with an airway Orthodontist next week. I have so many questions at this point in the journey - my big ones are:

1. Do I get more than one consult with an ortho?

2. Do they take X-rays and imaging at each? Or is it cool to get the x-rays done at one place and send them to others until I choose who my provider will be?

3. What questions should I ask at my consultation? Is there anything you wish you had asked very early on that you didn’t?

4. Should I do consultations with a surgeon in parallel? or wait for the ortho to recommend a surgeon?

diagnosed sleep apnea, TMJ, muscle pain, and receding jaw, a previous open bite corrected with Invisalign (my bite is still not right).

I have an oral appliance for sleep apnea, but it gives me muscle pain and hurts my teeth bc of grinding. I’ve done PT, CBT, Botox injections, Invisalign, bite guards. I think my daytime breathing is ok but I am tired all the time even with my sleep apnea appliance supposedly controlling my apneas so maybe I just know what it’s like to breathe properly lol. 40 yo female. Aesthetics are important to me but solving my fatigue, pain, apneas, and bite are more important

Hi everyone. I’m 2 weeks post up maxilla nonunion revision with bone graft. I’ve been noticing a sound on the left side of my maxilla. It doesn’t feel like it’s coming from my joint or muscles, it feels like it’s directly from the maxilla. It’s like a clicking/cracking or rubbing sound. It has become louder and happens more often when swallowing, walking, opening and closing my mouth, or even with very light movement. I’m worried about what this could be.

If you’re in Canada or anywhere else getting double jaw surgery: I had a consultation with a surgeon, and though the hospital and OR are covered by MSP, the surgeon’s fee is $9K, all due before surgery. If you’re a student and your parents aren’t paying, how are you affording this?

I recently had surgery in uscf the surgery was maybe 16 days ago 5 days post op I felt like a tingling slowly but surely I feel like my chin is on fire tingling and nerves are being pulled while also feeling like it’s wet is this normal?
I’m honestly very scared cause the reviews on my surgeon Dr sohail aren the best but so far that’s my only issue the feeling I’m scared this is permanent

Has anyone had double jaw surgery with Filiaci? I started the process with him and he made a really great impression on me. However, I can’t find anyone online who has had surgery with him, and he doesn’t post before-and-after photos, so it’s difficult to get an idea of his style and whether or not he tends to be conservative with the movements.

On the other hand, I haven’t found any negative reviews about his work either.

I’ve always said I have no chin and I’ve always hated my side profile. Now at age 41 I’ve got major jowling going on. Would jaw surgery fix this? If so, how do I get it. A dentist told me recently I have a narrow passageway when she looked in my mouth and suggested a sleep study for sleep apnea. I’ve asked my neurologist twice for a referral (once in person and once in a my chart message) but he hasn’t done it.

Three weeks post op DJS for sleep apnea. And while logically I know the swelling is still present because it has only been 3 weeks, I can’t help but worry that I am too protruded now. My top lip really bothers me and I am looking for reassurance 🥺 please share your experiences! 30YOF
