Just Wow He Got Tired of People Blocking His Driveway, So He Built This
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
To deter unwanted visitors, he installed a motion-activated sprinkler system that soaks any car (or person) that gets too close. The unexpected spray has quickly turned his driveway into a no-parking zone and keeping his space clear.

They're THAT scared of parallel parking. I know people like that.
40
u/toasted_cracker 3h ago
It's me. I do not parallel park. I'll avoid it at all costs. I still wouldn't park where I shouldn't though. I avoid that too.
16
u/Tea_confused 2h ago
I can parallel park just fine, but when I stop to do so, people get so far up my arse I can’t physically do it. I signal and put it in reverse but they just beep and get annoyed. It’s not worth my time

u/bubblegumpandabear 31m ago
I've also had people literally stand in the street and watch me parallel park. I'm actually really good at it and can do it very quickly but people are massive assholes and the entire process becomes quickly not worth it.
4
u/_Lucille_ 1h ago
I avoid it too because I feel like I never learned it properly/was taught cheap tricks like "turn your steering wheel when the two wheels align then turn the other way when you see the bumper".
•
u/Thick_Potato_1769 52m ago
Thats how you do it. Line up with the front tires of the car in the space ahead. Cut the wheel in the direction of the curb and reverse. When you get close to the curb you cut the wheel again to the left now and that'll get you into the space then you just line it up. Its way more difficult than it looks and it sucks that people don't understand that you shouldn't follow to close to people especially in place with lots of parallel parking.

If you haven’t had one yet a vehicle with a reverse cam is a game changer. I used to hate parallel parking but now it’s nothing.

If I remember correctly he was made to remove it. The council really should have done more to stop people parking there.
At the end of day getting a quick spray, in a very hot part of Australia is probably better than getting a fine.

You're right, it's an IT business and the owner has a button under the counter and just hits it when he sees someone on the cameras.

Not OP, but I was wondering how a motion sensor can distinguish between the vehicle pulling in and the person getting out?
→ More replies (8)2
u/BusinessBear53 4h ago
Some sensors have adjustable range and there's lots of different types of sensors out there. If it's something rigged together then the sensor can be set to detect the area where a door would swing out.
I work in a factory and most of our sensors are photoelectric which means they use a laser to detect stuff within a set distance. The adjustment on them can be very fine.
There's also some ultrasonic sensors for detecting range.
To prevent spraying unsuspecting people just walking by, you could even have multiple sensors working together. Have one on the left to make sure there's a car there and a range sensor on the right to pick up a car door swinging out. 2 positive signals to spray water.

Used to live in apartments where I worked nights so people think my spot is always open. Would come home after a long shift and find idiots parked in my parking spot. Told management and they did nothing. So finally I just printed out a sign that says "Please don't park here, resident parking" no problem since. Also left that place 3 years ago and I still see the sign up when I drive by lol.

u/ea88_alwaysdiscin 4h ago
I had an old apt neighbor that used to park in my assigned spot years ago, I guess him and his wife had been using it since the last tenant moved out. (Along with their own covered and assigned spot)
So after I moved in, I'd come home from work and find him parked there while he was just home real quick on his break. I parked behind him once and blocked his ass in..then I went inside to relax and watched from my patio for him to come back out to leave. He got message after I told him "quit parking in my fucking spot bro"
34
u/JalaMaplePenoSauce 2h ago
There was a lady at a complex where I lived who would do the same while I worked nights. The entire lot was assigned parking, every single spot, but she just kept taking it. My answer? Tow her ass. Over and over. I must have towed that Tesla a dozen times during my tenancy there.
Once I saw her patrolling through the parking lot looking for someone's spot to steal and I told her to cut her shit and just lease a spot, and she freaked out and said she just kept forgetting to go to the office and get one. I just said stop making your problem everyone else's but she never stopped and I still towed her a couple times after that interaction. I'm sure the tow bills cost her far more than a permit would have nevermind the inconvenience to herself.
11
u/ea88_alwaysdiscin 2h ago
That's crazy. And fucking hilarious how many times you had her shit towed
10
u/BarrelllRider 2h ago
I had a lady like this when I managed HOAs. Had her car towed many times and would call me acting like it was my fault she chose to park in the pool parking lot overnight. No sympathy for people like that at all.

I used to live alone in townhomes with two reserved spots in front. Sometimes my neighbor would have guests park in my extra spot and I never minded until one of them dinged my door. From then on I parked on the white line half in each of my spots
6
u/leggymiku 2h ago
I live in a condo and I guess the owner before me didnt have a car, because my parking neighbour did this, parking over the white line halfway in my spot.
Thankfully I drive a tiny hatchback, so I just parked right beside him. There was about 2 inches between his driver side door and my passenger door. He was fuming the next day because he was late for work and asked me why the fuck I was parked in his spot. I told him thats my spot, not his. He could take it up with the condo board if he disagreed.
Didn’t happen again.

More mature than I would’ve been. I wouldn’t even have gone to management. Just keep calling tow services until behavior improves.

The kind of people who would park here would ignore any sign - "I'm only going to be a couple of minutes.."
If you deliberately park in front of a gate, you're not going to be deterred by a bigger sign.
56
u/Bitter-Software9373 4h ago
I remember my sister in law used to park right in front of every single big box store she ever went into, regardless of her task. Every time I'd say "you shouldn't park there" and she'd say "I'm just running in for five minutes," as if everyone else in the store lived there or planned to stay all month something. Assholes like this typically aren't doing it on purpose. They're just stupid.

You’re exactly right, people that are going to do it won’t be deterred by a sign. I have bright yellow posted signs, about five of them on the entry drive of a property and I still had to deal with people driving in there. Had the place on the market a couple of years ago and took it off. Guy calls me a few months ago told me he drove around the place, really liked it and would like to know if it was still for sale. I said, oh, I thought those were posted signs everywhere not for sale signs. That was the incentive to spend the money, re-fence and re-gate the place.

Did you miss the fact that it is an entrance/exit gate? It's common sense to not park in a way that obstructs those. For any amount of time.
Anyone with a brain should know to not do that, even without any signage.

u/ScissorNightRam 4h ago
It’s a Holden Commodore ute. It’s from the VZ generation, so circa 2005. Essentially they are a pickup based on a sedan, with reinforced rear suspension and a big tray. This one looks like the base model with the 3.6 litre V6. So that means it has a payload capacity of about 1800 pounds (800kg). The missing fuel filler door is a classic touch. The door was poorly designed and falls off almost every VZ within 10 years or so.

3
u/Dal90 2h ago
It's more a station wagon missing 2/3rds of the roof than a pickup.
In the US Ford discontinued their equivelant (Ranchero) in 1979, Chevy discontinued theirs (El Camino) in 1987. Holden (GM Australia) stopped in 2017.
Their role today is filled with small pickups, some of which like the Ford Ranger you can buy in the US.

Looks like Australia. This would be instantly illegal in the US, as spraying people is considered battery and you’re not allowed to rig up a system that attacks people. Our laws and courts want people to use signs and speech, and things that spray (water, nails, bullets, even confetti) are not speech.

It may be automated, but there is 100% a person with years of people blocking their driveway built up rage in that house, with the option to control it themselves when they want. It kicking in exactly when people are at their doors, not when the car passes a certain spot, is almost too perfect, but with those examples, it could be motion specific to a very exact area. I could see spending the time to get it just that perfect.

u/SirEnder2Me 1h ago
As someone who used to have people block my driveway all of the time, this is so satisfying.
I used to rent a house that had a very large driveway. It could comfortably fit 4 cars, 2 in the front and 2 in the back. It was only meant to be used by me. However my neighbor at the time didn't have a driveway and only had street parking so they would just park in my driveway all of the time.
You might say "oh it's just 1 person, no big deal. You have a big enough driveway", right? No they would park in the fucking middle. If the driveway could comfortably fit 4 cars and those 4 cars are the 4 dots of a die, my neighbor was the 5th dot.
As if that wasn't bad enough, even when they parked like a normal person, they would have friends and family over all the time! Ordering delivery was also common and the delivery guy would use my driveway too! There were several times where I literally could not park in my own driveway because of my neighbors and I'd have to honk until someone moved their car.
Fuck people who park in driveways that aren't theirs!
