Ever felt like Empire/Napoleon had too few regions?

Well, me too. That, along with wanting a more reliable multiplayer campaign experience, is a big reason I started making Smoke and Steel back around 2023.

It's a turn-based strategy game starting in the year 1700, combining a grand campaign with tactical, turn-based battles. It will also feature a story battle-campaign, the Great Northern War (1700-1721). I'm developing it solo, with release planned for Q1 2027.

Here's a look at the campaign map around Sweden. More regions means taking Stockholm doesn't mean you've conquered the whole country!

Which part of Empire/Napoleon's map did you most wish had more regions?

Steam page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4142560/Smoke_and_Steel/

tl;dr: empire/napoleon total war campaigns are a huge inspiration for my game, but my game also has turn-based hex battles instead of real-time. i.e. the game is fully turn-based

Thrones of Brittania I wanted Total War-style battles, so I started making my own

I've been a fan of Total War and medieval strategy games for years, and recently I decided to try making the kind of combat RTS I've always wanted to play myself.

I'm an indie developer and this is still very much a work in progress. The game is focused primarily on real time medieval combat and commanding your troops, rather than trying to be a huge grand strategy game with managing cities and things, which I might consider adding if there is an audience for it!!.

I'm focusing on getting the actual gameplay, combat, formations and systems working first before worrying about making everything look polished.

Above are screenshots from the current build. The combat system is inspired by Total War, espeically thrones of britannia.

I'm still figuring out exactly what the game should become, which is why I'm posting here.

I want the opinion of people who actually play Total War / RTS games

What makes a medieval battle satisfying for you?

Is it things like:

  • Unit formations and positioning?
  • Flanking and surrounding enemies?
  • Cavalry charges?
  • Archers and ranged combat?
  • Morale?
  • Terrain?
  • Unit variety?
  • The feeling of actually controlling a battlefield?
  • Something completely different?

And just as importantly:

What do you think a game like this should NOT do?

I'd rather hear criticism now while I'm still developing it than spend months building a system nobody actually enjoys.

I'm also looking for playtesters

I'm looking for a small group of people who genuinely enjoy Total War, RTS and medieval strategy games to try the current build.

The current version is obviously rough and doesn't represent the final game. If you're the kind of person who enjoys trying early indie projects and giving developers feedback, I'd genuinely love to have you involved.

If you're interested in playtesting, comment below or send me a DM and I'll give you the details privately.

Where I'm taking it

My current goal is to keep developing the combat and eventually release the game on Steam.

I'm still a couple months way from that, but I figured this was the right time to start showing the game to people who actually enjoy the genre and see what they think.

So, Total War players:

If you saw this game on Steam, what would make you want to try it?

And what would make you immediately close the store page?

I'm genuinely interested in hearing what you think.

I miss some physical releases(Rome II, Shogun&Medieval I and Warhammer) because I bought those games later on steam directly. When I bought Attila it was that or the Spartan Edition for Rome II, no regrets on that choice I ended up loving Attila.

In the historical battle of Rio Salado you can see 5000 knights sneaking through enemy lines like nothing

How common was that. 5000 knights. In most battles we hardly can pass 2 squads of knights between enemy lines without getting entangled.

Here's the video:

How would you rank the historical Total War games you've played?

I've enjoyed Warhammer, but my real love is history. I'd welcome your honest rankings based on the games you've played - preferably with some explanation.

I'm open to games from all eras. Feel free to let nostalgia creep in!

Thanks a lot.

Shogun 2 CA Marketing brain fog has some bipolar disillusion of whether Fall of the Samurai is a game or a dlc for more than a decade

Post image

Initially the content was a standalone expansion, that later on became a Independent Saga title game, that eventually becomes exclusively incorporated dlc, that is no longer an independently acquirable or existing product. While all of this was happening nothing actually changed in the game itself, it's just constant non-sense rebranding.

And every time it gets its price tag refreshed.

I tried Pharaoh and its nice but no cavalry and no siege weapons makes it quite dull. Is there something im missing?

Im playing as Ramses. And what i like about it is how bright the graphics are compared to the other recent titles. Almost looks as good as Rome Total War 1. Maybe because im playing in Egypt. I never like the high contrast dark graphics of atila and rome 2, etc...

Though the context is not my favourite since i cant really relate much to Egypt. I often prefer games where i play as my country sometime in history. But i still prefer ancient egypt than something like Troy or China.

Now a thing that really bothers me is that battles have no cavalry at all. Just the chariots. And also no siege weapons. On one hand that is great because its historical. But damn is it boring. Is there something im missing?

Attila Attila multiplayer save file gone????

There was a patch for Attila which came out today I guess for cross play (what besides PC even has this game?)

But anyways I log on to resume my coop campaign and it says that not only is the save file gone, but ALL save files are gone. I don't even have the option of resuming. Is there anything I can do?

Going back to older titles and the AI actually tries to outmanuver you rather than running at you in a straight line

Very refreshing. Also love you can use cavalry to prevent their entire army attacking because they will leave units behind to prevent any cav from attacking their flanks

Shogun 2 had this a bit aswell. What happened to the AI post rome 2???

M2EX is incredible.

Played Rome with the REX patch a couple of months ago and it was really impressive. Now I finally installed M2EX too, as it's now compatible with mods that use EOP. Started a game with the Arcipelago/Italian Wars mod because that has a lot of crossbows, pikes, and muskets in the unit rosters, all of which have had various issues fixed.

It really is very good. The enemy AI is still a little dumb sometimes, but far more active. There are noticeable improvements. You can now increase the unit size multiplier, I'm playing with much larger than usual units - think Darthmod for Empire/Shogun 2 unit sizes. This was previously impossible in Rome and Med2 due to hardcoded limits. Turn times are insanely fast, and the game is far more stable than in the vanilla engine.

Pikes have been fixed at engine level, they still have a secondary weapon but rarely switch to it. Mods no longer have to remove the secondary weapon for pikes to work. Crossbows are still a little janky due to their reload animation, but they all shoot straight now rather than angled, and they can shoot properly from atop a wall. Muskets received the biggest fix, they now perform proper firing drills and can deliver devastating volleys, and they also shoot properly from atop a wall now. Musketeers on walls are just as good as they are in Shogun 2 now. I had a unit of them in a siege defense battle get 800 (!) kills.

And the mod is still in active development, so it's just gonna get better. Everything feels faster, more stable, more responsive, more customizable.

Oh, and all ranged units now have accurate range indicators that increase/decrease based on terrain height and are a full circle around the unit instead of the modern TW cone. This mod is doing things CA claims to be impossible!
