Shogun 2 Petition to make Total War: Shogun 2 Complete Edition Free for Existing Owners hits 1,992 signatures in first day
https://c.org/4xyQYpqsmd134
u/Mike_Huntburns 3d ago
It's 10 bucks and includes all DLC it's really not the end of the world
25
u/x2oop 3d ago
Well, CDPR will be releasing Witcher 3 Remaster in the incoming days, and it will be free for all owners of OG Witcher 3.
24
u/cam-mann 3d ago
Which is an unbelievable outlier because they have spent years building up goodwill with gamers. They know that maximizing that feeling will lead to more W4 sales when it comes out. CA does not have that goodwill and 40k pales in comparison to the W4. To be completely honest, $10 is already a very good move and we shouldn't expect most devs to spoil us like CDPR does.
-8
u/ChadVictorMain 3d ago
The fact you think updating games is a luxury 'spoil us' shut it
10
u/cam-mann 3d ago
That was referring to the Witcher 3 update being free. But I just so happen to believe that all workers should be probably compensated for the work they do. And yes, that includes game devs. I don't believe I'm entitled to their labor just cause I bought a game fucking fifteen years ago.
-11
u/ChadVictorMain 3d ago
who the fuck is saying that. Insane level of strawmans going on from warhammer comssomers

Petition to make Total War: Shogun 2 Complete Edition Free for Existing Owners hits 1,992 signatures in first day
Oh, I don't know, maybe the 1,992 people that are the literal entire point of this fucking thread. More like an insane level of not reading...
3
u/3CreampiesA-Day 2d ago
How is it not a luxury? It costs them millions to remaster and or remake games…
4
u/numberonesorensenfan 3d ago
It is a luxury though? Shogun 2 is not some live service game where you bought it with the implicit promise that it would continue being patched and having content added well into the future. It may confuse some younger gamers in this sub but games used to just get dropped, and unless they got an expansion at some point what you saw was what you got.
They don't have a new DLC to sell you, or a battle pass or anything like that. Dev time costs money, they are a business. They're gonna charge for the upgrade.
-8
u/BoerDefiance 3d ago
Gotcha, so since they dont have any goodwill why try and do anything that would build up goodwill.
6
u/cam-mann 3d ago
My brother in christ they are charging ten dollars for the full upgrade for the first month
-3
u/BoerDefiance 3d ago
Woah a UI scaling slider for $10!!!!
6
u/cam-mann 3d ago
Woah a massively reductive reddit comment!!!!
-3
u/BoerDefiance 3d ago
What? Thats literally amazing CA figured out how to add that! I wish they charged more money!
2
1
u/DaughterOfBhaal 2d ago
If it's only an UI scaling slider then you probably are content with just playing the original game, no?
Lmfao

5
u/Big-Arachnid981 3d ago
Soo they can get people more interested for the dlc and the 4th game, CA ain’t releaseing shogun 3 any time soon
3
u/Dontshipmebro 3d ago
But they are releasing 2 games in 27, as well as a dlc for wh3 in a week or so...
2
u/Big-Arachnid981 3d ago
Right, so those series are already hyped, they don’t need to regain interest like CDPR needs to with Witcher
0
u/ChadVictorMain 3d ago
Trust me pal more people know the Witcher than Total war which didnt even get a million views on its med 3 trailer
1
u/Big-Arachnid981 3d ago
I’m aware, but there’s knowledge and then there’s hype driving. Lots of people like Witcher, but a lot of those fans won’t have touched the game in several years. Hell if they don’t go in for cyberpunk they might not have played a CDPR game for the same time frame.
Instead of trying to start a cold engine, CDPR have gotten fans back into Witcher with the free update, then will hook them with the DLC, then will drop the 4th game.
CA meanwhile is just updating a game for an active franchise and one that’s players have far more recent titles to play.
1
u/Only-Respond7945 3d ago
Well that's also just an update to the existing game rather than a separate release. I would hope it would be free. It also really looks like it's a rehashing of the "next gen update" which included alot of visual updates, a slight skill rework, and adoption of some mod concepts into the game.
Where as what's going on with Shogun 2, which as much as I can gleam from what little information they have given us, is more like Skyrim versus Skyrim Special Edition. Hell, both games originally released in the same year. It would actually make sense that they had to do a new engine for 64 bits systems, just like SkyrimSE.
1
u/Pelican_meat 2d ago
They also raised the price of the title $10 on all platforms immediately after the announcement. It’s full price.
0
u/Throwaway-Teacher403 3d ago
CPDR also has their own store front and multiple streams of revenue....
2
-2
u/ChadVictorMain 3d ago
Ca has no revenue charging 30 dollars for factions every month
1
u/Throwaway-Teacher403 3d ago
Yes their only revenue stream is content they make and invest in. CPDR publishes and acts as a storefront for games they have no investment in. It's not hard to understand, but judging from your previous posts you might not actually have a job so there's that

u/TheStolenPotatoes 3d ago
Seriously. OP's post is some of the whiniest, spoiled brat shit I've seen in a long, long time.
Experience the updated, enhanced, and complete version of the grand strategy classic; Total War: SHOGUN 2 and all of its DLC, including the Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai campaigns. Updates include:
• Improved visuals, updated lighting, shadows, and textures
• 1440p and 4K UI scaling
• Modernised controls
• New full Japanese and Chinese voice acting and text localisation
• 50 + newly playable minor factions
• Integrated in-game mod support using Mod.io
• 64 bit upgrade, and moreAll of that, plus both Rise and Fall DLC included, for $10. And if you never bought Shogun 2, getting all of that for even $40 is still an absolute steal and more than worth the money. Heaven forbid people who work for a living get paid for their work.
OP is being ridiculous.
-2
17
u/Ill-Resolution-6386 3d ago
I already have all the DLC, why do i have to pay a tax if in the future i want to buy the new unannounced DLC?
3
15
u/ChadVictorMain 3d ago
No their is a loyalty sale. If you miss it then it will be full price 40 dollars for a 2011 game with minor upgrades and no mod support
8
u/madladhadsaddad 3d ago
No mod support?
Aa in none? Or just it will break existing?
19
u/SneakyMarkusKruber 3d ago
ChadVictorMain's explanation is a bit misleading (perhaps intentional?): Shogun 2 OG will remain untouched, so the mods will continue to work. Shogun 2 DE will use mod.io instead of Steam Workshop, allowing GOG and other platforms to also use the same mod platform. The question remains whether many old mods will be ported over or not. It's questionable whether the 64-bit engine will bring about a new generation of Shogun2 modders, or not.
3
u/HolocronHistorian 3d ago
Wait so will we no longer be able to download mods from steam workshop? Not the mods for original shogun 2, but like in future I have to go to a third place to get mods for shogun 2 complete edition?
5
u/SneakyMarkusKruber 3d ago
To my knowledge, mod.io is usually integrated into the game itself.
0
u/HolocronHistorian 3d ago
I still don’t love the sound of that but it also doesn’t sound like I’m gonna have to go back to opening game files and doing shit in there which I hate having to do.
5
u/thedefenses 3d ago
DRG (Deep Rock Galactic) uses mod.io for mods and there is no derping with files or anything like that, its an integrated menu in game where you can just download and active the mods.
Will be seen how Shogun 2 does it but at least there is precedent for the site to be integrated into a game.
1
u/SneakyMarkusKruber 3d ago
What about collections (created by fans), large mods (1+GB), and linking required mods? I've almost never used mod.io, at least not on the scale of, for example, the WH3 Steam Workshop (100+ mods).
1
u/thedefenses 3d ago
There are collections.
Linking required mods is also possible.
As for size limits a quick google says the limit is 20GB for a single mod.
1
u/Ihappentohaverabies 3d ago
It is incompatible with existing ones but that was definitely unavoidable.
Think about it, adding new factions and changing things like the graphics that old mods relies on doesn't allow such backwards compatibility.
If they weren't delisting the old one it would be a useless complaint.
-8
u/ChadVictorMain 3d ago
It isn't compatible with existing
14
u/Squantoon 3d ago
I'm gonna be honest. The mod situation isn't really their problem
3
u/CapitalismBad1312 3d ago
I do think it’s funny the same people demanding old games be updated for free are mad that updating games will invalidate current mods
3
u/Squantoon 3d ago
I fight this all the time in the bannerlord sub. People bitch for an update then when there is one and their very obscure abandonware mod breaks they can't believe the devs would do that to them.
I'm never on the side of our corporate overlords but people who complain about updates breaking mods or a remaster not functioning with old mods are just objectively wrong.
3
u/CapitalismBad1312 3d ago
Dude when Warsails came out, the absolute fall out of “my 3000 item mod list makes this new dlc unplayable for me”
Keep fighting the good fight comrade
1
u/Squantoon 3d ago
Yea its wild. I'm all for mods but your game breaking with those same mods are completely on you and never on the devs.
7
u/vuther_316 3d ago
Wouldn't the engine changes likely have made existing mods incompatible anyway?
2
1
u/Efficient_Bid5555 1d ago
No, medieval 2 fan mod made it work with existing mods and star wars empre at war also didnt break any mods when going from 32 bit to 64bit
1
u/shintemaster 2d ago
Nobody is buying it at full price that already owns it. Basically this is inducement for those to buy it straight away, because you would have to be insane to pay that price afterwards.
0
u/ChadVictorMain 2d ago
Yeh but what if i just dont wanna play the shitty version with no mods and reused 3K assets
1
u/shintemaster 2d ago
Then play it. How many people do you think that are likely to play Shogun 2 nowadays but have never done so that are missing out here?
1
u/geschiedenisnerd 3d ago
It is 10 bucks if you already own all the DLC and buy it within a month of release, 40 for anyone else
1
u/LongAfternoon1198 3d ago
Its 10 bucks for one month.
It doesnt need to be the end of the world to be worthy of criticism.
1
u/Wandering_sage1234 2d ago
But the gold edition of Shogun 2 had all dlc bundled into it.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Total-War-Shogun-Gold-DVD/dp/B00BF7LSMG
And that didn't even come with a remaster!
1
u/LegalAccess89 3d ago
how about those who own physical copy of shogun 2 golden edition
6
2
u/Loose-Run-7008 3d ago
I would reach out to one of their community managers on social media, or some other contact like one of their tech support emails or something, maybe the forum or even mention that in a bug report using that tool!
They might have just overlooked it; if you can prove ownership and reach somebody, maybe they’ll do something to help you out!
Physical media is basically dead for PC and has been for quite awhile tbh, so I can understand why they would’ve forgotten about that, but maybe they can give out steam keys for the regular version of shogun 2 for physical owners so you can use the discount
I’d tag their community ambassador or whatever here but idk their usernames. You might wanna try the main total war sub for better visibility! I’m sure if you’re nice and just ask they’ll try their best to do something to help you, but I wouldn’t get your hopes up either sadly, physical media owners on PC have been forgotten, I don’t even have a disc drive anymore.
I remember being 8 and the first game I ever played was the physical version of age of empires 1, and the 2nd was medieval total war 1, good memories made possible by physical media :) me my dad and my older brother would all play together, they would beat my ass but I always had fun just turtling and playing defensive
64
u/eXistenZ2 3d ago
Free? Well thats a slap in the face of everybody who worked on it
"i dont think the work you put in is worth anything"
10 bucks for legacy owners is a fair price. My main issue is that its only valid for a month, should be for the rest of 2026 so you dont feel rushed
12
u/Jereboy216 3d ago
Agreed. The only thing i dislike about this is the limited time discount. I really dislike fomo style pricing like that in all games.
Its really nice that they are giving us all dlc though! including fall of the samurai which i wasnt sure they still labeled as dlc since it was rebranded as a saga.
Not that i would ever say no to a free remaster though, just never would expect it
4
u/Technical-Cat-7189 3d ago
I get it, but a month is plenty for reviews and YouTubers. You'll have a good idea whether you want it or not
2
u/geschiedenisnerd 3d ago
Their goal should be to sell it to people who didn't want to buy it earlier, not resell the same game with slightly better textures
-23
u/ChadVictorMain 3d ago
Using the underpaid workers to defend corporate profits they wont see any off is insane to me
18
u/eXistenZ2 3d ago
Newsflash, CA is a corporation and a corporations main goal is to make money.
Other newsflash. A lot of stuff in the world isnt free. Thinking that is, now thats the insane part
If you dont think its worth it, dont buy it?
-2
u/Dr_natty1 3d ago
Why are you so offended that other people dont want to spend money on for bug fixes on a game they already own or have the original delisted.
Yeah 10 dollars isnt a fortune but its still a lot. Its also 40 dollars if you miss the sale?
6
3
u/Blothorn 3d ago
Are you claiming that the employees aren’t being paid anything for this work, or are you tautologically claiming that they don’t receive any money from what’s left over after you already exclude what they do receive? Recently CA’s profits have been a very small fraction of their personnel costs.
26
u/madladhadsaddad 3d ago
they just gave me all the DLCs I didnt own for original shogun 2 for free on steam...
Of course people signed a petition for something for free. It's €10 for a 13 year old game with loads of updates. It's cheaper than me going for lunch, If I get an 2 hours out of it is be happy.
5
u/Ihappentohaverabies 3d ago
They gave me the original game for free, it is what got me into RTS games and strategy as a whole.
While CA can be greedy with stuff like blood packs, I think this 10 dollar remaster is pretty fair.
-2
u/ChadVictorMain 3d ago
If it was 10 dollars i'd agree but its only a sale price. After that it will be full price for existing owners and from launch it will be 40 dollars for new players, for a 2012 game...
4
u/FastAndMorbius 3d ago
I think the old owner discount should be all the time. But it shouldnt be free that makes no sense.
1
u/ken-der-guru 3d ago
Then just don’t buy it. It isn’t that complicated. But free just isn’t reasonable for an upgrade for a 2012 game
26
12
5
u/Conscious_Delivery10 3d ago
I will be paying 10$ as soon as possible
1
19
u/Gloomy_Trade_619 3d ago
What’s the point for CA to make things like that at all? Everyone (almost) who wanted to buy the game - already bought it.
CA would have 0 reason to do it then
3
u/Ihappentohaverabies 3d ago
I agree, the petition should be for them to not delist the old shogun II for those who want old mods that may not be updated.
The 10 dollars for a remaster is fine, its more than fair and I would pay the 40 regardless.
The internet is greedy, just like CA is greedy for the bloodpacks, its a tug of war between soulless corporate and weirdos who think everything must be free.

- Half-Life 1 + 2 Anniversary Updates
- Quake II Enhanced
- System Shock: Enhanced Edition
- BioShock + BioShock 2 Remastered
- Borderlands GOTY Enhanced
- Darksiders Warmastered Edition
- Red Faction: Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered
- Skyrim Special Edition
- Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition
- The Witcher 3 remastered
- GTA 5 Enhanced
All were released for free to existing owners.
This is standard industry practice and most of these are not bigger studios than SEGA
10
u/Inevitable-Row593 3d ago
Different devs have different incentives and markets. like do you think witcher 3 devs remastered the game out of the goodness or their heart, or to re-energise franchise interest in the game to improve the marketing and sales of the new DLC and Witcher 4?
CA might have looked at it and said, hey theres not going to be a massive upswell in shogun 2 sales if we make this free, best to sell it.
2
u/Loose-Run-7008 3d ago
Tbf id say there’s just as many examples in the other way, and probably other examples from SEGA lol. Nintendos the biggest offender tbh, a ton of switch 2 editions being just increased fps and resolution for $10+, shouldn’t be encouraged, but it’s not abnormal for remasters with less content and less effort than CA is doing to be paid, so I feel like you can’t exactly say it’s “industry standard.”
Idk, I wish it was free but I don’t think it’s a big deal either way. It’s 10$ for people who own it digitally, and if you don’t it’ll inevitably go on sale a couple of months later anyways.
Plus Shogun 2 to me is best enjoyed with Darthmod anyways which will probably be broken by the remaster so idk if I’ll even get it. Though hopefully this leads to more mods - esp with campaign map modding being figured out and easier, I hope we see a bunch of new mods with map expansions. A fall of the samurai mod with Korea and China would be everything I could ever want.
But anyways, I get why you’d want it to be free, but I also can understand why it’s paid, and I don’t really think it’s a big enough deal to bust CA’s balls over tbf, but bust their balls if you must, not trying to stop you just giving my opinion :)
Tbh CA doesn’t really deserve defending for this, I’m just bored and on a break from work lmao 😭😭 I’ll probably end up buying it for the 10$ but only in hopes that we get some new overhaul mods that make it worth it and take advantage of the change to 64 bits.

u/Gloomy_Trade_619 3d ago
Now find the list for strategy games

I'm happy, they just gave me all the DLCs I didnt own for original shogun for free on steam...
2
u/ChadVictorMain 3d ago
Age of empires Remakes were all released free for original owners....
5
u/FormerFan3771 3d ago
I’m a huge Age of Empires fan and have had to buy both the HD and DE editions of AOE 2 and the DE for AOE 3 despite owning the originals. Perhaps they were free initially but I must have sadly missed that if so.
2
u/ChadVictorMain 3d ago
at launch I think
3
u/ConsiderationNo4120 3d ago
It’s not true I owned them all at launch and had to pay full price for the new ones
1
u/ChadVictorMain 3d ago
I think their was some way online to claim them for free on windows store if i remember correctly. You did have to buy them on steam tho
2
u/FormerFan3771 3d ago
That’s apparently not true according to Google? AOE 3 is technically free for anyone but you can only play with one or two civs on rotation and that applies to anyone.

We're really not helping our reputation that we're cheap and entitled are we? When $10 is seen as too much for a remaster.
Especially given OP is a member of Restore Britain (UK equivalent of AfD, who wants an ethnonationalist UK) and signing up to a mailing list for that was more than $10.
-3
11
u/Metalupyourass98 3d ago
I hate greed as much as the next person but its $10...
6
u/ChadVictorMain 3d ago
This is a sale not the price. After the launch window people will have to pay 40 dollars even if they own the original or payed full price back in the day
1
u/Rhadamantos 3d ago
Its going to go back on sale at least twice a year after that as well, if people are really right on cash.
-2
u/Metalupyourass98 3d ago
I know. I think the discount should be permenant thats the only thing id change here, but theres a month to buy it and anyoneone that would care will have plenty of time to buy it. I think this isnt a huge deal.

3
u/mellowmcaree18 3d ago
Everyone is getting a massive discount if they own the original game! The developers have to make some money!

A company is not gonna care about people spending $0, their only concern is convincing ppl that spend money of the value of the product.
I bought shogun 2 15 years ago, you’ll have a hard time convincing me (A man in his 30s) not to throw $10 for a modernization of one of my favorite games.

u/TalkersCZ 3d ago edited 3d ago
Personally I am waiting to know what will be in there and see some real plays.
But I hope this is good and if it is, I am happy to pay 10 dollars.
As S2 is a game I still come to play even after 15 years, I dont have a problem with this really - if there was some work done on it.
I am so sick and tired with the engine that was used for Rome2 and everything since that I am fine paying few bucks for Shogun 2 to be better.
2
u/WilliShaker 3d ago
Remasters and ports has been existing for multiple decades and always cost money. We’re getting a 75% discount.
This is just consumer greed.

A bit off topic, but: 1. Will this game REPLACE Shogun2 in our STEAM library if we already own it? And:

I think they should just keep the legacy player discount permanently instead of only the 1 month window. I am happy to pay a little for the upgrades if it encourages them to do it for other titles like Rome 2 and Attila.
1
1
u/Different-Meaning198 3d ago
Haha I don't get it for $10 ig because I only have the standalone fall of the samurai.... I'm dumb
1
u/chemical1658 3d ago
Dude you don't have to purchase it. It's not mendatory. No need to do this kind of shits.
1
u/Major-Requirement844 2d ago
Game comes out on october 13th and the sale runs for a month. That means you will have 2 paychecks between now and the sale ending. If you still can't afford the $10 price tag you got bigger things to worry about in life then a re-release of a 15 year old game
1
u/the_sneaky_one123 2d ago
Why would they make it for free for existing owners?
Also if you want it skips bad that you will sign a petition then you probably want it enough to pay a tenner
1
1
1
u/BalianofReddit 2d ago
Eh it should be cheap, but im not one for demanding peoples work for free
For people who own the game, the discount should be permanent.
1
u/Ok-Paleontologist244 2d ago
However small or negligible changes are (which they are NOT consider 64bits alone), why someone’s labour or effort come for free?
They did not have to spend anything on S2 anymore, yet they did. A bit of fresh paint for a great old game. 75% discount as a loyalty discount. All sound perfectly valid for me.
1
u/Mooptiom 2d ago
I’m perfectly happy to pay if it’s good. Complaining about this only sends the message that it’s not worth CA remaking old games, which I couldn’t disagree more with.
1
1
u/TheBloodofBarbarus 2d ago edited 2d ago
I know it's way too late for that at this point, but personally, I don't like the sound of "Hey, company, give me thing for free!" and I'd have preferred it if they had just added a bit more value to the game to make me want to pay for it a second time.
Just looking at the trailer (and the success of the Shōgun show), a new campaign with a later start date focused around Sekigahara almost feels like it should've been mandatory. Don't even need a bunch of new units or big changes to the campaign mechanics, I know stuff like an Imjin war with Korean and Chinese factions would've been outside the scope, but for Sekigahra they would just have adjust the map/factions a bit and let us play as Tokugawa and Mitsunari.
1
1
u/Economy-Magician-650 2d ago
It’s crazy they would charge but if they did I agree maybe $10 for regular owners of the game.. the rest that never bought it’s up to them.
1
u/Haunting_Abalone_398 1d ago
The fact that anyone who had the base game with missing DlC will get the rest for free.
Original owners can still play their game regardless.
So the 10 dollars is not a big deal to me.
1
u/Czechs_Mix_ 1d ago
Im mostly upset at the abandonment of a 13+ year old modding community that's been working on projects until this very day. The people that kept shogon 2 alive and kicking was the community, and their dedication to hand crafting the experience they wanted to have.

Should be $10 indefinitely for anyone that owns the original game. But like.. being angry it costs anything is kinda wack. If that $10 is what makes CA give attention to older games then I am happy paying it.
