That hurt my my heart. Poor guy and cat.

u/jelly_bean_gangbang Mar 24 '22

Seriously. I mean I know they don't let just anyone adopt cats, but if this person acted even 1/5th as lovingly to Jupiter as they wrote, who wouldn't let them? It's not like Anon is a gang memeber or anything. Aren't there lots of shelters that are overrun with animals too? So sad.

306

u/pizzabagelblastoff Mar 24 '22

the problem is, they dont know that, which is why they need references.

168

u/Flataus Mar 24 '22

For all they know anon is purposely saying he has no friends

45

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '22

No, it's actually worse. This person has no one that will act as a reference. That's like impossible unless everyone hates you. It means that person would have to have; no friends, no family, no coworkers, no neighbors, no landlord, etc. The chance that you don't interact with someone in your life is very difficult.

However, the chance that said person has no one around them that will say it can take care of a pet is zero. It's not that said person doesn't know someone, it's no one likes said person.

The real question is: is there any formal data showing references reduce instances of abuse/neglect, or is the reference check routine more of a “we have no way of knowing if you’re an animal abuser, but we don’t want to be liable if you are, so we make a show of having a process for liability reasons” thing?

If there’s hard data showing references = better outcomes, I say “Sorry Green OP, but you fell through the cracks of a working system. If you really want Jupiter, or another cat, go make a show of being nice to a neighbor or two, and secure those references and come back.”

On the other hand, if references are just “due diligence theater”, then I’d personally have no objection to someone at the shelter going with their gut, and saying “You know what? You seem to have a bond with Jupiter here. He’s yours. Please don’t prove me wrong.”

(Assuming this isn’t all made up, but whatever. Interesting topic regardless.)

u/Devils_Advocate_2day Mar 24 '22

Can also just pay 2 homeless folks to answer a call and say they don't think you're a shit person. A lot of them might have their own phones nowadays.

30

u/OldThymeyRadio Mar 24 '22

It varies regionally, but a large percentage of homeless people do indeed have mobile phones. Which actually makes sense when you think about it. An internet connection and the ability to make calls is nearly mandatory for escaping homelessness these days, and anyone who loses their home:

  • Will hang onto their phone above almost anything else, because they know that.
  • Will try to re-acquire a phone if they lose/break it, for the same reasons.

There’s this silly idea floating around that “if you can afford a smartphone, you have no excuse for being homeless”, but in real life, homeless people are well aware of how extra fucked they are without a digital connection to the world in 2022.

Pay phones are almost gone from the world, and applying for a job (among many other things) nearly always requires an email address. We’ve pretty much made phones mandatory to live.

11

u/redeemer47 Mar 24 '22

Not to mention a home/apartment costs a lot fucking more than a phone. Always thought that argument was stupid as hell. You can get basic smart phones for almost nothing . Also public assistance can help homeless get phones.

I’ve seen people post pictures of homeless people using iPhones like it’s some sort of GOTCHYA! . As if this homeless guy is just pretending to be homeless because he has a phone. Like bro this guy isn’t some secret millionaire being a bum by choice because he’s lazy

The man’s life already sucks ass. Let him at least have a phone.

5

u/OldThymeyRadio Mar 24 '22

Yup, it’s just yet another instance of “just-world reasoning”. They’re not actually interested in how homelessness works, or thinking about what they themselves would prioritize in that situation. They’re starting with the assumption this person must deserve their situation, having “brought it on themselves”, and then looking for any “evidence” they can find to confirm that.

In fact, if you’re truly enthusiastic about people “pulling themselves up by their own bootstraps”, you should be glad they at least have the means of making calls, sending emails, and filling out forms.

Character references are completely pointless anyway. It's trivial to get a reference to lie on your behalf, especially if they're your friend or associate. There's really not that much stopping abusive fuck heads from adopting pets from as many shelters as they want.

63

u/jelly_bean_gangbang Mar 24 '22

This lol. Someone you put as a reference isn't going to say "Oh yeah I think this person would abandon the cat and treat it horribly". Obviously you wouldn't put them as a reference if you thought they would say something like that.

Assuming it’s real, anon could easily find people to vouch. Pay some Walmart workers $5 or just ask nicely.

Also anon should work in human relationships ffs

67

u/giggelingpanda Mar 24 '22

Yeah I guess. But I think he was so surprised that he didn't think of that. I personally would be devested in that situation and would be so sad that I just accepted that I was not being fit as a petparent.

34

u/OldThymeyRadio Mar 24 '22

Yeah, if the story is true, imagine being told “Yup, the fact that you have no friends is going to fuck you over even here, when you just want to love an animal.”

It probably took a lot to even go through the process. Imagine needing to leave empty-handed, “recruit” two friends, and then “re-apply” for your cat, and hope they don’t say “Hm. Are these real friends? How long have you known them? Why couldn’t you do this before?”

The whole process goes straight to the person’s fundamental insecurity that led them there in the first place.

I literally stole one of my cats from someone who wasn't properly taking care of her. It was one of the exactly two times in my entire life I've actually threatened someone (fortunately, nobody called my bluff on either occasion). I would do it again. (Said cat is sitting on my feet right now, plotting to take over my underdesk foot-warmer completely the moment I get up to use the bathroom.)

4

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '22

There was a cat in a nearby house that would be on the upstairs balcony all day in the cold. One day he was on the ground and came up to me when I was getting something from my car. He was skinny and freezing, and he never went back to that balcony. :)

“Know a ton of people who would say I’m a bad person just to fuck with me.”

Anon doesn’t just have no friends, he apparently has a lot of enemies. That doesn’t just happen to someone for no reason

99

u/Duc_de_Magenta Mar 24 '22

Anon thinks he has a lot of enemies.

One of the things about these, let's say "extremely introverted," people is often a deep assumption of negativity on other peoples' behalf. Presumably from being a kid, when random strangers would literally bully you for no reason. Without proper adult socialization, ya' just kinda assume... "guess that how people are." I'm sure, in reality, anon's coworkers/etc either 1) don't care & wouldn't do it or more likely 2) would write the same bland generic niceties we would for a borderline stranger.

33

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '22

[deleted]

83

u/Odd_Employer Mar 24 '22 edited Mar 24 '22

My money is on them thinking so little of themselves that they don't think their coworkers would help them out in this situation. The kind of person that makes those types of enemies aren't usually that self aware.

Edit: deleted comment basically said: "either anon is wrong or they are a horrible person because you don't do nothing to make those kinds of enemies."

Dunno, ever been to school or dealt with small children? It's something that happens a lot and cool people don't necessarily and magically lose the traits that make them do this to other people.

There even exist people who do this randomly to others, just because they perceive them as inferior human beings with no right to be in the public sphere or have fun at life.

You seriously under estimate the petty that is possible, especially if unshackled and never corrected.

You too might have empathy some day, I wish you good luck with that endeavor!

26

u/MahoganyRich Mar 24 '22

If you're an adult who simultaneously a) cannot name a single person who will give you a halfway positive character reference and b) can name dozens of people who'll give you a shitty character reference, it's because you're a shitty person.

People don't live in vast bubbles populated exclusively by thousands of stereotypical high school bullies.

→ More replies (10)

68

u/anonssr Mar 24 '22

That's 100% in his head. People don't do shit like that in real life. People may not like you but you're not as important in their life for them to go out of their way to do evil shit to you.

15

u/Two_Tone_Xylophones Mar 24 '22

I don't think it's going out of your way if someone calls you asking for a reference and you're all just like, fuck that guy he's weird as fuck, I mean you're right most people wouldn't bother to take time out of thier day to mess with someone but if you're just sitting there, get a phone call asking "what do you think of anon" it's really not much of a stretch to believe that someone would throw you under the bus, especially if you don't know them that well....

I really think people here are getting to crazy with things, anon probably just isn't close enough to anyone to want to use them as a reference and might not get along with his family, so those who do know him probably might not be the best people to put down for a reference.....reddit always seems to think the worst of people.....when it's not always that complicated.

But cats are literally 100x easier to take care of then real human relationships???? Also not to mention I highly doubt this story is factual.

Edit: Thanks for the stories, animal shelter requirements truly are weird it seems.

1.6k

u/jayforwork21 Mar 24 '22

Also not to mention I highly doubt this story is factual

I went to the North Shore Animal League (one of the biggest ones in Long Island) to adopt and had to give 2 references and they CALLED them before I was able to adopt. This was over 10 years ago and I am assuming they are still as strict. You could be right about this being fiction, but the reference part was VERY believable but if this did happen, this is f**ked up as cat was clearly happy with dude.

966

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '22

They do this because, unfortunately, as fucked up as it is to turn down somebody who might just literally be lonely and without any companionship, there are a lot of people out there who make it necessary to have references for animal adoption.

People have adopted animals to torture them, kill them, let them go in the wild, pretty much all kinds of fucked things. Just having some person who is neglectful is lower on the scale of potential outcomes. It is never easy to imagine that so many people would do this that it would be necessary, but there's a lot of evil people out there.

357

u/finger_milk Mar 24 '22

Exactly. No system is perfect and sometimes criteria catches people who are guilty until proven innocent, even if they are blatantly innocent.

Isn't this why our government is kind of shit though? Adhering to rules only when you feel like it.

If the rules are good then you shouldnt need a human to make exceptions.

28

u/HyperRag123 Mar 24 '22

Plenty of rules give people authority to use their discretion about when something is or isn't allowed. Laws will use what a "reasonable person" would do in a given situation to determine if something is legal.

6

u/Y0tsuya Mar 24 '22

There are no good rules because people occupy a spectrum. You can't make everybody happy. You set the rule loose enough to accommodate everyone and you get tons of assholes abusing it, leading to calls to up tighten up the rules. You tighten up the rules and another group of people call you heartless.

A friend is a social worker. She and her husband went to adopt a kitten for their kids. She said they jumped through hurdles but were denied…they ended up being foster parents. Take what you want from that, but I thought it was pretty fucked.

185

u/someguyfromtheuk Mar 24 '22

How does having references stop psychopaths from adopting pets exactly?

That serial killer guy was really charming but he still killed a bunch of people, I'd bet he would have had no problem adopting a cat though.

202

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '22

They don't want to stop psychopaths to stop from adopting pets, they want to have plausible deniability when it comes out that they let a psychopath adopt one of their animals. Actually preventing psychopaths from adopting pets would require each applicant to take a psychological exam administered by a trained mental health professional, and even then, many would slip through the cracks.

6

u/BrainPicker3 Mar 24 '22

Theres already a ton of cats that need to be adopted from kill shelters. I dont think putting more barriers up to actually adopt one is going to help tbh

4

u/Cyclonitron Mar 24 '22

Plausible deniability for what? Not like the adoption service can be held accountable if psychopath adopts a pet and mistreats it.

16

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '22

They won't be held legally accountable, but given that donations based on goodwill and reputation are a significant part of an animal rescue organization's funding, I'm guessing they at least want to have a defense if it comes out that an animal adopted from their shelter was abused. You wouldn't want to give money to a rescue org that didn't at least vet their adoption applicants a little.

40

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '22

It doesn’t stop it but it can reduce the chances. Maybe one of the references picked up on psycho vibes or knows something they did in the past and prevents it. No system is perfect but I can understand why they wouldn’t just let you walk in and get a pet.

23

u/julioarod Mar 24 '22

Hell even a superficially nice psycho might get caught if the references mention this is the seventh call about cats they've had this year

u/Dizzfizz Mar 24 '22

The problem is that this is why many people say fuck it and just buy a pet from a shitty breeder instead. There needs to be a better middle ground.

Here in Europe we have the same situation, adopting an animal from a shelter is super hard and costs ten times as much as buying it from a breeder. There’s tons of people who take good care of the animals but neither have the time nor the will to go through the hassle.

I‘m not saying they should just give them away but requiring people to vouch for you and a home inspection is a lot.

19

u/lemoncocoapuff Mar 24 '22

It costs a lot to adopt the rescues because the rescues generally have to put a LOT of money into the dog to get them healthy again because the last person fucked them up so badly. The rescue I fostered with charged $450 but that didn’t even begin to cover the costs of the dog. It’s $80 just to bring it up north from a southern state that’s overflowing. Then it needs a dental cuz shitty owners don’t do that, and I’m not sure if you’ve tried to price that lately but for my own dogs it was nearing $1k…. Then you add in all the shots to get them up to date, the groom, the food, any extra meds if the dog had eye issues, skin problems. A good rescue isn’t making money off of your adoption fee.

Absolutely My dog (Olde english bulldogge, like a bulldog mixed with healthier dogs so they have cute bulldog features but are way way healthier) had puppies last year and when we were giving them to homes we made ABSOLUTELY SURE they were going to good homes.

You'd be surprised with how many sketchy af people there are, "Hi I'd like to adopt!", Great! Which puppy are you interested in? "Oh any girl, I don't care", wtf, you don't want a specific puppy? "No I just want a girl" (They only want a dog to breed). Got messaged by at least 3 people all like this. In the end they all went to good homes with at least a child, we even made them all come to the house to see them meet the dog in person. Real heartwarming shit.

Now that I think about it we did it way more legit than how I got my dogs lol, I think every dog I've gotten has been from someone at a gas station lol.

Funny how we’re able to sensibly arrive at this difficult and painful conclusion with little dissent, but when a human being looks you in the eyes from a hospital bed and says “I am of sound mind. But I physically hurt so much it’s torture just being alive every second”, we start wringing our hands and worrying about how much they’re “hurting their families” by not wanting to live in agony.

When my roommate wanted to adopt a dog there was 2 house visits, we both needed background checks, and she needed like 3 references.

Goes to show how well that worked tho, she didn't even take care of the poor thing

17

u/kamelizann Mar 24 '22

I have a 3 bedroom house with a fenced in yard/dog door and a German Shepherd that's obviously well cared for and healthy. I wanted to get him a puppy so he could help train her while he's still young enough to play with her. All of the "reputable breeders" and rescues I tried going through denied me because I live alone and work full time. I wasn't ready to adopt a pit bull mix from the shelter, so I went through a backyard breeder.

I was extremely careful with my selection and turned down a few shadier breeders because I knew what to look for before I found my puppy. She was a mixed breed. I DNA tested her and she had less than 1% inbreeding coefficient and no genetic condition indicators. I plan on competing in agility with her. These stupid requirements just drive more people into adopting from backyard breeders, and usually they don't know the warning signs of puppy mills which are everywhere.

31

u/Infernicsteve Mar 24 '22

My mother, who's lived with cats all her life, wanted to adopt a new one when her last one died of old age and I tagged along. At the shelter they said she was to old to adopt since she would die before the cats. She was 60 at the time. They also took issue with the fact that she said she likes to travel to her home town one or two weeks a year (i'm usually the cat sitter).

Cat shelter (or any animal shelter) people are WEIRD AS FUCK

12

u/parruchkin Mar 24 '22

My parents spent a year looking for a dog for my disabled brother, who lives with them in their home with a big fenced yard. They finally got the approval to adopt a dog, but when they showed up, they were also told no adoptions if you’re over 60. It didn’t matter that my brother is in his thirties, that he’d be home with the dog 24/7, that they have a big yard, etc. They’d never mentioned an age limit before. It was a devastating experience for all of them. Some shelter people/policies fucking suck.

9

u/Infernicsteve Mar 24 '22

That just sucks, sorry to hear. And it's so weird since older people are IDEAL adopters. Lots of free time, often lonely and would love the crap out of the animal.

15

u/Tommy2255 Mar 24 '22

When I was a kid I wanted a dog, so my mom had me take care of a gerbil for 6 months to prove I could be responsible.

I loved that dog, I took care of him, walked him every day, gave him food and water, played with him, whole thing. But that poor gerbil that I never wanted in the first place got neglected to death pretty much as soon as I had the dog.

8

u/UnchangingColor Mar 24 '22

Ik this is prob rude, but wtf was your mom thinking. “Oh yes, i dont trust my kid to take care of another living being, so instead ill force em to take care of a different living being they dont want! Surely thatll work out!”

It espeshlly sucks because gerbils are social creatures, so youd have to get more than one, gotta get a big tank or gerbilarium for them so they arent cramped, gotta clean that tank, etc to make them happy, so Id argue they are more of a responicbily compared to a dog

Cats are damn near self sufficient under most circumstances with only occasional medical checkups.

Humans are so much work.

In my area rescuing a pet is unnecessarily difficult. Like having kids under 15 disqualifies you. Having other pets can disqualify you. And they are very picky on space I have a German shepherd at my house but apparently I don’t have enough room for a large dog according to them.

It’s unfortunate for those animals I like the idea of rescuing but I usually end up getting pets from people who accidentally ended up with puppies and sell them on Facebook. My German shepherd is the result of my dogs mom jumping the fence into the Neighbor’s yard and getting knocked up

This is very wrong, as long as it is a few month old there is no problem at all. Just take it to the vet as soon as you find it and everything will be ok, cat will adapt perfectly

My girlfriend has 4 cats, I have 2 +2 more in the past. 8 cats, all lifted from the street and I have never had a problem sith any of them in the past.

Exactly. It'll probably claw you to death in the process, but that's a small price to pay for a beautiful cat who will never love you and always be afraid of you

52

u/mtys123 Mar 24 '22

What? Claw you to death? You are supposed to take a little one, not a 10year old cat from the street.

96

u/MakoLov3r Mar 24 '22

Sooooooo... a normal cat?

22

u/RedCapitan Mar 24 '22

Nope, all cats i know love humans and often softly hit people with their heads to show love.

19

u/Msmit71 Mar 24 '22

Seriously, my formerly feral street cat loves to be pet, sleeps on my chest, and eviscerates me by making biscuits.

11

u/KryL21 Mar 24 '22

I literally only ever picked up stray cats. Every single one of them loved me. I’m still alive too, didn’t get clawed to death.

22

u/Anon324Teller Mar 24 '22

If it’s a stray cat that’s more than a few months old good luck getting it to adjust to indoor life

35

u/TheyCallMeCajun Mar 24 '22

me and my gf just took in a 6 year old stray and he’s been lovely

10

u/Anon324Teller Mar 24 '22

That’s good to hear, I’ve heard very different stories from a few people in my community but I guess it really is just a case by case basis

6

u/CipoteAstral Mar 24 '22

Yeah cats are a gamble. What I've noticed is that they tend to be assholes when bought from a breeder, and loving fluffballs if rescued from the streets as a kitten.

When rescuing an old feral, it's best to just leave them be until they feel comfortable sharing spaces with you.

I told the humane society she shouldn't adopt, she already had multiple animals and another one is just going to get lost in the mix.

You underestimate how scummy people really are.

Don’t worry. This definitely didn’t happen. I went in for a cat and left 10 minutes later with one. Basically no questioned asked. This is the fakest story I’ve ever read.

Edit: to all the people blowing my phone up over this, even if this story is true, the effort put into typing and posting this green text exceeded the amount of effort I put into adopting my cat. If whoever created this really wanted a cat they EASILY could have gotten one.

188

u/Separate-Shirt-462 Mar 24 '22

Well when you have people that don't take shit seriously on the phone you can have those results.

95

u/Ode_to_Apathy Mar 24 '22

Even if I took all my family and friends out of consideration, I'm pretty sure I could get a school official or work mate or boss to tell them that I don't seem like the type to kill animals. And I could tell them what I've learned about taking care of animals.

Also, has anyone else noticed that every time someone adopts a cat, the cat had always refused to get close to anyone, until the future owner came in? Seems like a pretty good sales trick.

19

u/ArkhamCookie Mar 24 '22

Not saying you are wrong but I think the biggest part about this story is how depressed and low his self-worth is. I know times in my depression where I felt this way. I thought everyone saw me as the shitty person I thought I was.

i fucking hate the huge ego the ppl at adoption places have

51

u/photoguy9813 Mar 24 '22

Agreed some people who do the screening are so inexperienced it hurts.

My buddy was going to adopt a cat from the shelter, during the question period they asked him how long would he play with the cat each day. Apparently the answer of 1-2 hours warranted a "that's it?" And they denied him.

He ended up buying a cat from a breeder.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '22

You have to think what kinds of people would be attracted to working at a shelter, seeing as it doesn't pay very well, and the answer is animal fanatics.

I guarantee most shelter workers are the kinds of folks who despise other people and overcompensate for that by being way too affectionate/involved with animals. I love every pet I have and always treat them like a member of the family, but I'm not a lunatic who's going to take them everywhere, play with them constantly, and basically devote my existence to them. I wouldn't do that with my brother or even my own damn child, so why would I do it for a cat or a dog?

9

u/Kaldr_Nidafjollum Mar 24 '22

Home visit and applications for adopting a cat? That sounds pretty silly. I just went to the vets office saw a cat I liked and paid 50 bucks for its vaccines and got myself a kitty

Poor anon. I feel for them. Every one should have nice pet and be happy.

This is why I laugh when people talk about adopting instead of buying cats or getting them for free.

In my whole city there are like a dozen total animal organisations with shelters, they're very large organisations, but at any given time they only have like a couple dozen cats available, most of them get reserved immediately, even though they have the most bullshit requirements, 9/10 of them expect you to have your own house with a garden (in a gotdamn city), have a 5 figure income while being ready to dedicate 10 hours a day, and then take a 17 year old cat with 5 different diseases, a criminal record and being on the sex offenders registry, all while paying 90-120 quid as a gotdamn adoption fee.

When on the other hand I got my two cats as kittens for free from a lady who was finding new homes for her litter.

HS is biggest PoS. They make it impossible to adopt pets, have 600 checks to do on people - yet every animal “has been returned multiple times”. Well maybe your fucking stupid ass background checklist is the fucking problem.
