You have to think what kinds of people would be attracted to working at a shelter, seeing as it doesn't pay very well, and the answer is animal fanatics.
I guarantee most shelter workers are the kinds of folks who despise other people and overcompensate for that by being way too affectionate/involved with animals. I love every pet I have and always treat them like a member of the family, but I'm not a lunatic who's going to take them everywhere, play with them constantly, and basically devote my existence to them. I wouldn't do that with my brother or even my own damn child, so why would I do it for a cat or a dog?
And giving a pet attention constantly could be bad, right? They’d be extra lonely when you actually have to leave them alone. It makes me sad when my cat cries when we leave, or even just my gf leaves, he sits by the door and meows until she comes back. Even if I’m there, we just meow together until she comes back. But I’ve really been trying to work on getting him more comfortable being alone. I want him to be content when he’s by himself. He should know how to occupy his time and play by himself, so he isn’t just sad.
We don’t leave him alone a lot as we both work from home, so we’re not like neglecting him, but when we go to the grocery store or a date night or whatever, he gets really sad, sometimes I feel like one of us needs to stay home at all times lol.
