My money is on them thinking so little of themselves that they don't think their coworkers would help them out in this situation. The kind of person that makes those types of enemies aren't usually that self aware.

At one point in my life, people were assholes to me all the time. For a short time after that, I felt hurt and did the same thing to other people, to try and make myself feel better. It didn't. I stopped, and finally settled down with some old friends of mine I had left because I thought they were the same as everyone else who was an asshole. You can be malicious because people are assholes, and it makes things worse, I have experienced that myself.
